Notes: The decay kinetics of the Xe(6p[1/2]0 or 2p5), Xe(6p[3/2]2 or 2p6) and Xe(6p[5/2]2 or 2p9) states have been studied in He and Ne buffer gas using the two-photon laser-excitation technique. The pressure dependence of the fluorescence decay rates was used to measure the total quenching rate constants at 300 K. The primary product distribution from two-body collisions with He or Ne were estimated from product fluorescence intensities, and state-to-state quenching rate constants were assigned. Limited information about the decay kinetics of the Xe(2p7),Xe(2p8), Xe(2p10) states was inferred from observation of the decay of these product states at various He and Ne pressures. With the exception of Xe(2p5) in He and Ne and Xe(2p7) in He, the decay constants of the Xe(6p) states are less than 1.0×10−11 cm3 s−1, and these rate constants are smaller then the decay constants for heavier rare gases. The collisional depolarization of Xe(2p6) by Ne was studied by monitoring the decay rates of the vertical and horizontal polarization components of the fluorescence intensity.

Notes: We show in this letter that population inversion between subbands in a quantum well can be achieved through resonant interband tunneling. Two basic device configurations based on polytype heterostructures are proposed and analyzed. The estimated population inversion (n2−n1) could be as high as 3×1011/cm2 with a moderate injected current density 104 A/cm2 under a forward bias.

Notes: We present an analysis of the electron wave directional coupling in two parallel asymmetric quantum well waveguides. By taking into account the effective mass difference between the wells we show that the transfer coefficient depends on the energy of the incident electron wave. A realistic configuration as an example of these kinds of electron wave couplers is examined. Its possible operation as an electron filter is suggested.

Notes: An optical phase shifter with current injection has been demonstrated in a GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) single mode waveguide. Phase shifts at different wavelengths have been measured and compared with the theory in L. Banyai and S. W. Koch, Z. Physik B 63, 283 (1986). A 3π phase shift has been achieved in a 400-μm-long waveguide with almost no material absorption.

Notes: The sizes and orientations of 305 grains in a nonoriented silicon steel sheet sample were measured by means of an etch-figure technique. To these data, both the classical series-expansion method and the maximum-entropy method were applied to determine the rolling plane inverse pole figures of the sample. The results have been carefully checked and compared with the original and it is confirmed that the maximum-entropy method is preferable to the former in obtaining a satisfactory result.
