Notes: A fast-response chromel-alumel (and chromel-constantan) microthermocouple is described and its dynamic characteristics are measured. The microthermocouple features a microdisk junction 0.08 mm in diameter and 2.5 μm thick. Its time constant in turbulent flow of liquid Refrigerant-113 (a poor heat conductor) is measured to be ∼4.6 ms. This time constant was reduced to ∼3.4 ms with a phase-lead compensation circuit. It was possible to distinguish between vapor and liquid phase temperatures in turbulent subcooled boiling flow of Refrigerant-113 with the compensated microthermocouple.

Notes: : The on-farm economic effectiveness of government capital grants, subsidized interest rates, and the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) delivery quota levels in terms of adoption and/or expansion of irrigation in Saskatchewan is tested. The annualized net income at 5 and 20 years of three representative farm types - a dryland grain farm, an irrigated grain farm, and an irrigated mixed farm - are used in the analysis. Tradeoffs between income levels and the risks associated with adoption/expansion of irrigation are evaluated using mean-standard deviation tradeoff and stochastic dominance. Risk differences arise due to reduced business risk through higher yields and increased financial risk through higher borrowing when adopting or expanding irrigation. Capital grants and subsidized interest rates are effective policy measures for dryland grain farms adopting irrigation because the farms are left in a similar risk position. However, these grants and interest rates are not effective policy measures in the medium run (5 years) for irrigated grain farms expanding irrigation because they lower the farm's risk efficiency. In the long run (20 years), the capital grants and subsidized interest rates need to be combined with open CWB delivery quotas before the risk position can be improved for irrigated grain farms expanding irrigation. Finally, the grants and interest rates need to be combined with increased irrigated hay production for risk efficiency to increase in both the medium and long run (5 and 20 years, respectively) on irrigated mixed farms expanding irrigation.

Notes: Abstract The steady acoustic streaming generated around straight and precurved oscillating ultrasonic files driven by the Piezon-Master 400 unit was examined in the free field and in small channels using a stereomicroscope. In addition, the effect of file-wall contact on streaming production was also investigated. The results indicated that the ultrasonic files can generate acoustic streaming both in the free field and in the small channel. Higher velocity streaming was observed when smaller size files were employed and when the file was precurved. Light file-wall contact did not totally inhibit streaming while severe file-wall contact inhibited movement of the file and, as a result, no streaming was observed. The positions and length scales of the streaming vortices appeared to be influenced by the presence of boundaries. In the free field, two rows of vortices were situated along the sides of the file while in the small channel, the vortices were positioned above the surface of the file. These results indicated that it is possible for acoustic streaming to occur in a confined space as in a root canal provided that severe file-wall contact is avoided. It is therefore recommended that light filing or allowing the file to freely vibrate during some stage of treatment should be carried out in order to generate streaming in the root canal.

Notes: Abstract Thin films (25-2500 Å) of C60 molecules have been deposited on both (001) NaCl and mica substrates at varying temperatures by resistive evaporation. Both electron diffraction and high resolution microscopy have been used to assess the degree of crystallinity, the orientational ordering and the nature of the defects present in these face-centered-cubic films. For NaCl, optimum conditions yielded polycrystalline films with a tendency towards a 〈110〉 orientation, while for mica, extended single crystal films have been fabricated which exhibit a 〈111〉 direction normal to the film surface.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper studies the relationship between design mix and mechanical properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, endogenous shrinkage) of high-strength concretes of the 50–100 MPa range. The models proposed for each of these properties are based on an analysis of the hardness of concrete considered as a composite material, offering the possibility of tracing the properties of the concrete through to those of the matrix. The properties of the matrix are linked to the two main parameters of the mix (water/cement and silica/cement ratios) by empirical laws obtained by averaging out experimental data. Eleven concretes were made with the same ingredients, by varying separately the design mix parameters, also with the aim of identifying the effect of these parameters on the properties under study. The accuracy of the models proposed has been evaluated from these experimental data and other data drawn from the literature. Since these models form a synthesis of present knowledge of the material, they constitute a valuable contribution to the specification of high-strength concretes.

Notes: Abstract Recently we (Roy and Rana, 1990a) critically examined the self-consistency of the EIH equations of motion. A static spherically symmetric body as was pointed out there may not appear as a point mass with all its mass concentrated at its centre to a particle placed outside the body. An attempt to analyse this aspect further is made here in the context of the Chandrasekhar gauge. A comparison is also made with the general solutions obtained by Schwarzschild in the standard co-ordinates. Certain difficulties still exist.

Notes: Abstract This study examines the relationship between service-connection (financial compensation) and exaggeration of PTSD symptoms. Sixty inpatient Vietnam combat veterans in PTSD treatment comprised three groups: those financially compensated for PTSD, those financially compensated for physical or other mental problems, and those not financially compensated. Results indicate that those veterans who are not service-connected do not exaggerate symptoms on the MMPI F-scale more than those who are service-connected. Also, F scores reported for inpatient PTSD were higher than previously established cut-off criteria found chiefly in outpatient populations. Implications for therapists' biases concerning financial compensation and symptom claims are discussed in terms of their clinical relevance.
