Notes: Abstract The steady acoustic streaming generated around straight and precurved oscillating ultrasonic files driven by the Piezon-Master 400 unit was examined in the free field and in small channels using a stereomicroscope. In addition, the effect of file-wall contact on streaming production was also investigated. The results indicated that the ultrasonic files can generate acoustic streaming both in the free field and in the small channel. Higher velocity streaming was observed when smaller size files were employed and when the file was precurved. Light file-wall contact did not totally inhibit streaming while severe file-wall contact inhibited movement of the file and, as a result, no streaming was observed. The positions and length scales of the streaming vortices appeared to be influenced by the presence of boundaries. In the free field, two rows of vortices were situated along the sides of the file while in the small channel, the vortices were positioned above the surface of the file. These results indicated that it is possible for acoustic streaming to occur in a confined space as in a root canal provided that severe file-wall contact is avoided. It is therefore recommended that light filing or allowing the file to freely vibrate during some stage of treatment should be carried out in order to generate streaming in the root canal.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper studies the relationship between design mix and mechanical properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, endogenous shrinkage) of high-strength concretes of the 50–100 MPa range. The models proposed for each of these properties are based on an analysis of the hardness of concrete considered as a composite material, offering the possibility of tracing the properties of the concrete through to those of the matrix. The properties of the matrix are linked to the two main parameters of the mix (water/cement and silica/cement ratios) by empirical laws obtained by averaging out experimental data. Eleven concretes were made with the same ingredients, by varying separately the design mix parameters, also with the aim of identifying the effect of these parameters on the properties under study. The accuracy of the models proposed has been evaluated from these experimental data and other data drawn from the literature. Since these models form a synthesis of present knowledge of the material, they constitute a valuable contribution to the specification of high-strength concretes.

Notes: Abstract This study examines the relationship between service-connection (financial compensation) and exaggeration of PTSD symptoms. Sixty inpatient Vietnam combat veterans in PTSD treatment comprised three groups: those financially compensated for PTSD, those financially compensated for physical or other mental problems, and those not financially compensated. Results indicate that those veterans who are not service-connected do not exaggerate symptoms on the MMPI F-scale more than those who are service-connected. Also, F scores reported for inpatient PTSD were higher than previously established cut-off criteria found chiefly in outpatient populations. Implications for therapists' biases concerning financial compensation and symptom claims are discussed in terms of their clinical relevance.

Notes: Abstract To control the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio in a starting clay material for the synthesis of β′-sialon by the carbothermal nitridation process, montmorillonite was pillared with Al2O3. Conversions to sialon of pillared clay (31% Al2O3) and reference unpillared montmorillonite (18% Al2O3) have been compared. Pillared montmorillonite yielded a mixture of β′-sialon and various oxynitrides and oxycarbides of alumina as intermediate products. Pillared clay transformed faster during annealing than structural components of smectite alone. For the proper thermal treatment and clay/carbon ratio, both pillared and unpillared clays resulted in β′-sialon solid solutions.

Notes: Abstract Silver and aluminium bimetallic thin film couples have been studied using constant heating rate differential scanning calorimetry both on cleaned glass substrates and freshly cleaved NaCl crystals. The most striking feature was the occurrence of two maxima in the reaction rate during the formation of a single product phase, Ag2Al, suggesting a two-step growth process. The activation energy for this reaction was 0.98 eV in the first step and 0.93 eV in the second step. These values are in good agreement with values obtained by a different technique, i.e. Rutherford back-scattering. Transmission electron microscopy, thin film X-ray diffraction, the change in resistance of bilayer films with temperature and thermodynamic and kinetic analyses have been used to investigate the intermetallic phase formation. It was observed that substrate plays an important role in the kinetics of thin-film reaction.
