Notes: Intense rare gas-halide and rare gas-oxide excimer emission has been observed by coupling a pulsed electric discharge to a supersonic free jet expansion. A simple modification in the placement of the discharge anode drastically reduces the number of energetic electrons in the supersonic expansion region and permits large peak excimer populations to be produced by harpoon collisions involving rare gas metastables. The expansion velocity has been determined by spatially resolved spontaneous emission and laser-induced fluorescence measurements. Strong emission spectra from XeF, XeCl, KrF, KrCl, ArF, and the 2 3Π ion pair state of XeO have been recorded.

Notes: Density functional calculations with simulated annealing have been performed to determine the structures and relative stabilities of stable isomers of seven-membered molecules containing elements of groups V (phosphorus, arsenic) and VI (sulfur, selenium, and tellurium). Particular attention is focused on structures related to P4S3 and P2S5, including the families PnAs4−nS3−mSem and P4SnTe3−n. We show that the bonding trends in all these molecules can be understood in terms of transferable bond energies.

Notes: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to determine the stability of the cagelike structure of the seven-membered systems P3−7 and P4S3. In both cases the cage structure remains intact during simulations of several picoseconds. However, fluxional behavior of the P3−7 trianion could be observed directly, whereas no isomerization took place in P4S3.

Notes: Previous calculations on the structures of isomers of phosphorus clusters P2 to P8 [density functional calculations with simulated annealing (SA), J. Chem. Phys. 92, 6710 (1990)] have been extended to P9, P10, and P11. The tendency of phosphorus to form tubular structures is already evident in clusters of this size. We have also performed calculations on additional isomers of the hexamer P6, positive ions up to P+11, and the P2−4, P2−10, and P3−11 anions. Ionization energies agree well with available measurements [P1 to P4] and show trends that can be correlated with the structures and the measured relative abundances of the ions. The calculated structure of P3−11 agrees very well with x-ray diffraction data, and we observe isomerization in P9 resulting from charge transfer. A simplified SA scheme using a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) has been used to aid the analysis of the results.

Notes: Estimates of the diet of resident intact steers grazing four different tropical grass/legume pastures were made by two methods. In the first, oesophageal fistulated (OF) steers were used on three days and the botanical composition of the extrusa determined microscopically. The second method measured the carbon ratio (δ13C) of the faeces of the resident steers over three days, and the percentage legume in the diet was calculated after correction for digestibility differences between the grass and legume components. Estimates of legume percentages in the diet by the two methods differed markedly; OF steers selected a diet containing much more legume than did resident steers, the regression of extrusa estimates on δ13C having a negative slope. This, and other evidence, clearly shows that estimates using OF steers of the diet of resident cattle grazing tropical grass/legume pastures can be most unreliable. Reasons for this unreliability are briefly discussed.

Notes: Paraelectric lead lanthanum zirconium titanate (PLZT) films, 150 nm thick, were deposited using a spin-coat, sol-gel process followed by a 650 °C oxygen anneal. X-ray diffraction indicated complete conversion to the perovskite phase. Sputter-deposited platinum electrodes were employed with the PLZT films to form thin-film capacitors with the best combination of high charge storage density (26.1 μC/cm2 at 3 V and 36.4 μC/cm2 at 5 V) and leakage current density (0.2 μA/cm2 at 3 V and 0.5 μA/cm2 at 5 V ) reported to date. The electrical characteristics of these thin-film capacitors meet the requirements for a planar bit cell capacitor for 64-Mbit dynamic random access memories.

Notes: Measurements from the upgraded Finapres 2300e continuous noninvasive blood pressure monitor, the Finapres 2300 and Colin oscillometric noninvasive blood pressure monitor were compared with invasive arterial line blood pressure readings. Fifteen young Chinese patients undergoing elective spinal surgery of more than 2 h duration had contemporaneous blood pressure measurements digitally recorded every minute. Data were analysed using methods described by Bland and Altman to assess agreement of noninvasive devices with an arterial line. Results showed that although the Finapres 2300e was significantly more accurate than the Finapres 2300 and Colin noninvasive blood pressure monitors it could not be recommended as a substitute for continuous arterial line blood pressure monitoring. Both Finapres devices demonstrated reductions in accuracy related to time (drift) and over-read diastolic and mean pressures by 5–8 mmHg throughout the range of mean arterial line pressures (bias). The Colin was consistently less accurate than the Finapress monitors and performed worst at low mean arterial line pressures.
