Notes: The growth of lutetium silicide layers on 〈100〉 and 〈111〉Si is studied by random and channeling Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The LuSi2−x layers grow epitaxially with a better crystallinity on 〈100〉Si than on 〈111〉Si by vacuum annealing at 400 °C. Silicidation of Lu layers proceeds via nonuniform spatial diffusion of silicon atoms leading to a columnar growth of the silicide layer. Resistivity measurements in the temperature range 4.6–300 K show that LuSi2−x layers are metallic.

Notes: Abstract The final state in a relativistic ion collision is considered to be described by a hadronic gas model with hard core repulsion. It is found that for large interaction volumes, a description using the grand canonical ensemble could be justified. For a small system however, corrections arising solely from exact strangeness and baryon number conservation cannot be neglected. These corrections are discussed in a systematic way and analytic results for the partition function and the particle numbers are presented. A detailed numerical evaluation is made. Comparisons with recent experimental results is made.

Notes: Summary In paired cultures with two mycorrhizal fungi, the root pathogen Cylindrocarpon destructans (Zinsm.) Scholten had an inhibitional effect on mycelial growth of Laccaria laccata (Scop, ex Fr.) Bk. & Br. but was inhibited itself by Paxillus involutes (Batsch.) Fr. A similar pathogen-symbiont interaction scheme was observed in triaxenic cultures with Picea abies Karst. seedlings but only in the vicinity of the mycorrhizal root tips. Both mycorrhizas similarly increased the endogenous plant resistance against the infection of C. destructans. This suggests that direct pathogen-symbiont interactions are an important factor for population dynamics in the mycorrhizo sphere. Moreover, endogenous plant resistance constitutes one of the key factors for an effective defence against pathogenic fungi.

Notes: Abstract An equation of state is presented which takes the finite size of baryons and of mesons consistently into account and incorporates the contributions of both nonstrange and strange hadrons. All extensive quantities (energy, particle number, entropy) are modified by a factor taking into account the excluded volume due to baryon repulsion. Intensive quantities (pressure) are not modified. This is achieved by introducing a baryon chemical potential, μB, which is shifted from its point-like value, μ B 0 , by a term proportional to the finite volume of a hadron,V 0, as follows: μB=μ B 0 + V0[P0(T, μ B 0 )−P0(T, 0)], whereP 0 is the pressure for pointlike particles. The last term is necessary to conserve baryon number at the phase transition point. The differences between the new equation of state and those considered previously in the literature are discussed. It is shown that kaon condensation sets in only in the mixed phase of the transition, where hadrons, quarks and gluons are present simultaneously in thermodynamical equilibrium.

Notes: Abstract Two strains of an undescribed species of the genusKluyveromyces were recovered from the rhizosphere of spruce. A description of the new species,Kluyveromyces piceae, is given and its classification on basis of ascospore shape, substrate utilization, G + C-content, DNA-DNA-reassociation data and habitat specifity is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Two strains of an undescribed, soil-born species of the genusMyxozyma were recovered. They differ from other accepted species of this genus in their carbon assimilation pattern, mol% G+C and low extent of DNA complementary. A description of the new species,Myxozyma neotropica, and a key to the species accepted in the genus are given.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the minimization of a functionf: ℝn→ℝ under finitely many equality constraints and perhaps infinitely many inequality constraints gives rise to a structural analysis of the feasible setM[H, G]={x∈ℝn¦H(x)=0,G(x, y)≥0,y∈Y} with compactY⊂ℝr. An extension of the well-known Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification (EMFCQ) is introduced. The main result for compactM[H, G] is the equivalence of the topological stability of the feasible setM[H, G] and the validity of EMFCQ. As a byproduct, we obtain under EMFCQ that the feasible set admits local linearizations and also thatM[H, G] depends continuously on the pair (H, G). Moreover, EMFCQ is shown to be satisfied generically.

Description / Table of Contents: Subject of the present investigations is the description and application of the coacervative fractionation method for the separation of amounts of 500 to 700g low density polyethylene. The obtained fractions were characterized by their number and weight averages of molecular mass, the molecular inhomogeneity U, and the contraction factor gß, respectively. The fractions can be used for studies of structure-property relationships.
