Notes: High-quality Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox/Ag superconducting tapes were fabricated directly from the nitrate salts of Bi, Sr, Ca, and Cu by the partial-melt-growth technique. Nitrate particles were deposited electrostatically on the Ag substrate and heat treated. After process optimization of the superconducting tapes, the best samples showed typical Tc of 89 K with zero applied field critical current density of 2×104 A/cm2 (Ic=11.2 A) at 77 K and 2.6×105 A/cm2 (Ic=190 A) at 4.2 K. Unlike films grown using solid state reacted precursor powders, these films lacked the typical Bi-free, needlelike defects and possessed a smooth morphology. X-ray diffraction patterns showed the film to be highly c-axis oriented. The processing of these tapes significantly reduces the overall fabrication time from precursor materials preparation to final heat treatment.

Notes: Numerical simulations on the thermal convection of a neutral fluid (without a magnetic field) in a rotating spherical shell have been carried out. The results indicate that sufficiently rapid rotation results in strong differential rotation, with a pronounced equatorial acceleration. The formation dynamics of convection columns aligned to the rotation axis is studied extensively. A new generation mechanism of differential rotation is then proposed which concludes that the fluid motion generates an equatorial acceleration by selectively exciting the cyclonic columns in the spherical shell.

Notes: Abstract A Raman transition induced by a twin photon beam with quantum correlation, which is generated by nondegenerate parametric down-conversion, is theoretically analysed. The signal intensity of induced Raman scattering for the twin photon beam is twice as large as that for two coherent beams without correlation. Application of the twin photon beam is proposed for optical measurements of ESR spectra, which are useful for investigation of dislocations in semiconductor materials.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Un cas d'anomalie de l'artère mésentérique est rapporté.
Notes: Summary A case of anomalous mesenteric artery is reported. The artery was incidentally cannulated during angiography of a patient with a left renal tumor. It arose from the abdominal aorta between the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. The artery then ascended directly upwards from its origin and supplied the transverse colon replacing the middle colic branch of the superior mesenteric artery. The anomaly must be a result of a anomalous concentration of unpaired visceral arteries in the developing embryo. This type of anomaly is very rare and it would be appropriate to name the artery the middle mesenteric artery.

Notes: Summary A case of double superior vena cava lacking the left brachiocephalic vein was found. The left superior vena cava directly continued to the accessory hemiazygos vein without anastomosis with the coronary sinus. Therefore, the blood from the left superior vena cava drained into the right superior vena cava via the transverse anastomosis between the left and right azygos lines. It was thought that embryologically 1) the inter-precardinal vein was not formed, and 2) the left precardinal vein did not continue to the common cardinal vein, rather it drained into the left azygos line. This case may represent one of the most basic arrangements of the superior caval system.

Notes: Abstract The solubilization ofn-octane andn-octanol in nonionic micelles of octaethylene glycoln-alkyl ethers was investigated by means of various techniques including solubilization, fluorescence, and dynamic light-scattering measurement. With respect to the effect of alkyl chain length of the surfactants, different solubilization behavior was observed betweenn-octane andn-octanol. That is to say, it was shown that the solubilization ofn-octane increases with an increase in the alkyl chain length, while that ofn-octanol decreases. An interpretation of these solubilization mechanisms is explained from the standpoint of the volume of hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions in a micelle.

Notes: Abstract Microcapsules, absorbed with two mixed antigens- each composed of 3 sonicated leptospira serovars — were developed in the past as a microcapsule agglutination test (MCA-LS) for the screening of clinical leptospirosis. Fof this study, fifty serum samples, taken at an earlier and at a later stage of illness from 25 Italian in-patients with clinical symptoms of leptospirosis, were tested with both the MCA-LS one-dilution test and the microscopic agglutination (MA) test, the confirmatory test for leptospirosis, with 18 leptospira strains circulating in Italy. Compared with MA, MCA-LS showed a sensitivity of 91.7%, and a specificity of 92.3%, including leptospiroses not substained by the diagnostic strains used in the MCA-LS kit.

Notes: Abstract A novel method has been developed for measuring direct compressive properties such as strength and elasticity of a series of mesophase-pitch-based and PAN-based carbon fibres about 10 μm in diameter by uniaxial and transverse compression tests using a micromechanical tester. The fibres were shaped into cylindrical specimens, with their size ratio of length to diameter kept at about 2 to 3, by separating them from a “thin film” made by polishing the cut faces of a strand of carbon fibres with epoxy resin as a matrix. Individual cylindrical specimens were stood up or laid down on a glass plate without any fixer for the measurements of axial and transverse compression properties of fibres, respectively. The fibres exhibited non-linear elasticity, with the compressive modulus decreasing with compressive deformation. The direct axial compressive strengths of pitch-based carbon fibres were found to be marginally lower than the indirect ones, whereas there was no significant difference between the two strength values for PAN-based fibres. The pitch-based fibres exhibited smaller average values of axial compressive strength than the PAN-based fibres. The transverse compressive strength, which decreases with an increase in elasticity of carbon fibres, exhibited a considerably lower average value than that of the axial compressive strength. Further, the axial compressive strength was found to be smaller than the direct tensile strength for the fibres.

Notes: Abstract Muon capture rate in muonic deuterium can be calculated with less ambiguities in nuclear wave functions, since we know the bound and scattering states of the two nucleons with higher accuracy theoretically. It is, however, dependent on the pion-nucleon-delta coupling constant through the exchange current effect. This dependence is considerably reduced for the ratio of the capture rates from two hyperfine states of muonic deuterium. This ratio is, therefore, useful to study the strength of the induced pseudoscalar term. Several other physical quantities in light nuclei are also introduced here for the same purpose.
