Notes: The coercive forces and anisotropy fields of Fe-Ru-Ga-Si films deposited on 30° tilted substrates were measured for varying chemical compositions and crystal orientations. The minimum coercivity and minimum in-plane magnetic anisotropy were observed at an iron-rich composition corresponding to a substantial magnitude of anisotropy constant: K1=6×103 (J/m3). From an orientation analysis of the crystal aggregate, this optimization with the large K1 was understood to be a result of the cancellation of the shape anisotropy by the crystalline anisotropy.

Notes: Structure, magnetic properties and recording characteristics of the CoPtB(O) media with various underlayers were investigated. Recording performance of the CoPtB(O) perpendicular media is closely related to the crystallinity. Magnetic properties and recording characteristics are much improved by the Au seed layer, and higher reproduced output can be obtained at 200 kFRPI. CoPtB(O) perpendicular media show higher resolution than the CoPtB(O)/Cr longitudinal one. The reproduced output of perpendicular media at 200 kFRPI is more than 10 dB higher than that of the longitudinal one. Noise characteristics of both media are quite different in the recording density response. With increasing recording density, the media noise of longitudinal media slightly increases, while that of the perpendicular one gradually decreases. This means for the perpendicular media that the media noise might originate not from the magnetic transition but from the irregular magnetic reversals within recorded bits.

Notes: The relation between giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and the substrate temperature was investigated in sputtered Co/Cu multilayers. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio is increased as the substrate temperature is decreased. The increase in the MR ratio is considered to be caused by the improvement in the sharpness of interfaces as concluded from the satellite peak intensity of the x-ray diffraction. The rough interfaces reduce the antiferromagnetic coupled areas and result in the MR ratio decrease. By lowering the substrate temperature to 20 °C, the MR ratio of 80% at room temperature was obtained.

Notes: Hallervorden-Spatz disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder in which dopaminergic deficiency in the substantia nigra and its nigrostriatal projection has been identified. It is characterised by a slow but progressive course culminating in death. This case report describes a 13-year-old male, with a clinical diagnosis of Hallervorden-Spatz disease, who developed recurrent episodes of an acute illness, the features of which closely resembled those of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome. However, in this patient there had been no exposure to neuroleptic medication. The clinical events in this case suggest that dopaminergic hypoactivity, which is characteristic of Hallervorden-Spatz disease, can trigger episodes of neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Notes: 1. The effects of AE0047, a newly developed calcium channel blocker, on renal haemodynamics and function were investigated and compared with those of nicardipine in anaesthetized dogs.2. Intravenous injection of AE0047 (10 and 30 μg/kg) caused a dose-related fall in blood pressure (BP). The AE0047-induced fall in BP was of slow onset and long lasting. AE0047 at 10 μg/kg elicited a slight increase in renal blood flow (RBF) and urine formation.3. When AE0047 was infused intrarenally at non-hypotensive doses (25 and 50 ng/kg per min), there was no significant increase in RBF. However, the glomerular filtration rate increased significantly after drug infusion. Intrarenal arterial (i.r.a.) infusion of AE0047 led to dose-related increases in urine flow (UF), urinary excretion of electrolytes (Na+, K+ and Cl-) and fractional excretion of electrolytes. The AE0047-induced increase in urine formation was of very slow onset and progressed even after the cessation of the AE0047 infusion.4. The intrarenal arterial infusion of nicardipine at same doses as AE0047 produced significant increases in urine formation, but these effects were immediately restored to the control values after cessation of the nicardipine infusion.5. It was shown that AE0047 has a long-lasting diuretic effect and that AE0047-induced diuresis may be due to inhibitory effects on sodium and water reabsorption in the renal tubules.

Notes: The properties of a new blue-colored Imaging Plate (IP), Fuji type UR-III, were examined with respect to spatial resolution and sensitivity to Cu Kα radiation. The spatial resolution of the new IP, estimated from the full width at half-maximum of the diffraction profile of a glutathione synthetase crystal, was 270 μm, smaller than that in a conventional IP, Fuji type BA (330 μm) and larger than that in an X-ray film, Kodak DEF-5 (210 μm). An estimation of the peak-to-background ratios of diffraction spots from a hen egg white lysozyme crystal shows that the new IP is at least 25 times more sensitive to Cu Kα radiation than the X-ray film. This new IP is a useful area detector to collect diffraction data from large-unit-cell crystals.

Notes: Summary Basal forebrain (BF) lesion-induced amnesia in rats is widely used as an animal model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). To study the plasticity of brain function in BF-lesioned rats, we examined the effects of repeated trainings and the passage of time after the lesion on learning ability 3 weeks and 3 months after BF-lesions with ibotenic acid, using an eight-arm radial maze and passive avoidance tasks, and measured choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity. Both time and re-training played important roles in the recovery of the ability to learn, as measured with the eight-arm radial maze task, but not the passive avoidance task. In contrast, ChAT activity in the frontal cortex, which was low 3 weeks after the lesion, still low 3 months after lesion, even though the ability to learn had recovered. Recovery of the ability to learn can be attributed to undamaged cholinergic neurons, or to other neuronal systems, or to both. This animal model can be used to demonstrate the plasticity of brain function.

Notes: Abstract A new experimental technique has been developed for the determination of wood viscoelastic compliance in tension. It associates tensile creep tests parallel to, and off the material symmetry axes with a strain measurement system using a rosette gauge. Particular attention has been paid to accurate strain measurement, and to hydrothermal and mechanical disturbance factors. Application is restricted to the determination of the four compliances which characterize the viscoelastic behaviour of spruce in the LR (radial) plane, at 21°C and 12% equilibrium moisture content. The time-dependent strain induced by load level up to 58% of the ultimate strength, and applied during 4 to 10 days, is largely recoverable. As proposed by Schniewind and Barrett, the compliances are represented by time power functions. The experimental results support earlier observations that the creep level is much higher in tension in the radial direction than parallel to the grain, and that the creep level in shear over the LR plane is an intermediate between the above two cases. Finally, the experimental results illustrate the validity of the superposition principle under the test conditions examined, which is the basis of the linear viscoelastic model introduced here.

Notes: Abstract Blending of poly (2,6-dimethylphenylene ether) (PPE), polystyrene (PS) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was performed using a continuous co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The influence of LCP content on the blending process was studied by changing the barrel heater temperature and the screw speed. The torque of the screw shafts generated during the blending process was influenced by LCP content; its influence was not simple. The generated torque was found to depend not only on the melt viscosity of LCP but also on its distortion temperature. Further, the effects of matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PPE/PS/LCP blends were studied. Well-developed fine LCP fibrils were formed during the melt-drawing process when the matrix viscosity was high. The formation of well-developed fine fibrils was found to improve the mechanical properties of the PPE/PS/LCP blend. Two mechanisms are proposed for the formation of well-developed fine LCP fibrils.

Notes: Blending of polystyrenes (PS) with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) was performed by using a continuous corotating twin screw extruder. The influence of LCP content on the blending process was studied by changing the barrel heater temperature and the screw speed. The torque of screw shafts, generated during the blending process, was influenced by LCP content and its influence was not simple. The torque generated during the blending process was not directly related to the apparent melt viscosity of blends. Further, the effects of the matrix viscosity on the morphology and mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blends were studied using three grades of PS as matrix resins. It was found that the size of the LCP dispersed phase decreased with increasing matrix viscosity. Consequently, the mechanical properties of the PS/LCP blend were improved. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
