    Notes: Summary Effects of substance P on neurons of the guinea-pig hypothalamus in vitro and antagonism between substance P and baclofen were investigated. Substance P increased the firing rate of neurons in the medium containing 0 mM Ca2+ and 12 mM Mg2+. The excitatory action of stubstance P was antagonized by a low dose of baclofen whereas that of acetylcholine was not antagonized even by much higher doses of baclofen.

    Notes: Summary The neuroprotective effect of neurotrophic factors has been demonstrated in experimental cerebral ischaemia recently. These include nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and basic fibroblast growth factor (basic FGF). The neuroprotective effect of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), however, has not been studied so far. We have examined the neuroprotective effect of recombinant rat CNTF in a rat forebrain ischaemia model. A continuous infusion of CNTF was started 1 week before the induction of ischaemia and continued until 1 week after the ischaemia. Reversible forebrain ischaemia was induced by 7 minutes of bilateral carotid occlusion with hypotension. Neuronal cell death in the hippocampal CA1 sector was evaluated 1 week after the ischaemia. For the control group artificial CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) was infused instead of CNTF. Per cent neuronal cell death was 83.4 ± 5.9% (mean ± SEM, n=5) in the control group, and 71.1 ± 10.0% (mean ± SEM, n=5) in the CNTF group. Although percentage of neuronal cell death was lower in the CNTF group, the difference was not statistically significant. This result suggests that the protective effect of CNTF in the rat forebrain ischaemia model may be limited compared with other neurotrophic factors. It is considered that the number of neurons protected by CNTF may be small.

    Notes: Summary Cortical blood flow (CoBF) monitoring with a thermal diffusion flow probe was performed during the clipping of aneurysms of the ICA and MCA regions, on a series of patients during the acute stage of subarachnoid haemorrhage. Emphasis was placed on the CoBF recovery after temporary clip release. Since the absolute value in this technique is unreliable, recovery of blood flow after temporary clipping is represented as %CoBF according to the following equation: %CoBF recovery = (CoBFpost-CoBFintra)/(CoBFpre-CoBFintra) Presumably, this parameter checks the patency of the concerned cerebral vessels during clipping and/or release. Percent recovery of more than 100%, indicating postischaemic reactive hyperaemia, was observed immediately after release of the temporary clips in 8 of the 9 cases evaluated. In one case, with prolonged temporary clipping (37 min), no immediate recovery was observed after clip release, suggesting no-reflow phenomenon. The value slowly recovered after local administration of papaverin and returned to the pre-occlusion level within 20 minutes. Thermal diffusion CoBF monitoring may be useful in detecting the possible no-reflow phenomenon, that may lead to ischaemic complication, even after successful aneurysm clipping.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the protective action of nerve growth factor (NGF) on delayed neuronal death, and we also studied the involvement of the 200 kDa neurofilament (NF 200) cytoskeletal proteins. Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Group I, in which transient forebrain ischaemia was produced; Group II, ischaemic group which received intraventricular administration of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); and Group III, ischaemic group which received intraventricular administration of 2 Μg of 2.5 S NGF. Forebrain ischaemia in these rats was produced by causing transient bilateral occlusion of the common carotid arteries and lowering the mean blood pressure to 50 mmHg for 8 minutes. On the 1st and 7th day after ischaemia we histologically examined neuronal death in the hippocampal CA1 sector. On the 7th day after ischaemia, mean cell death (degenerative cell number/total cell number) was 87±9% in group I (n=7), 51±36% in group II (n=7), and 14±16% in group III (n=8) (p〈0.05 vs. group II). The concentration of NF 200 in the hippocampal homogenate was measured by the Western blotting method on the 1st and 7th day after ischaemia. On the 1st day it was found to be 67±11% of that in the control group in group I (n=6), 73±21% in group II (n=6), and 84±7% in group III (n=6) (p〈0.05 vs. group II). The concentration of NF 200 in all groups remained at the same level until the 7th day after ischaemia (each group, n=6). These results suggest that 1) intraventricular NGF has a protective effect on delayed neuronal death, 2) these protective actions occur within one day after ischaemia, and 3) these effects may be mediated by the suppressed degradation and/or promoted restoration of neuronal cytoskeletal proteins.

    Notes: We proposed a new method for evaluating mobilities of both Li+ and SCN− ions in a polymeric solid electrolyte formed by poly (ethylene succinate) and LiSCN. The method is based on the isothermal transient ionic current (ITIC) technique by using an ion-blocking platinum electrode and an ion-reversible lithium electrode. The differences of the ITIC profiles, depending on the kind of the electrodes, provided both mobilities of Li+ and SCN− ions, and their assignment. The mobilities of Li+ and SCN− ions at 90 °C were 1.3–4.2×10−6 cm2 V−1 s−1 and 5.3–10.7×10−8 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. The transference number of Li+ ions was 0.92–0.99.

    Notes: Ionic conductivity σ and mobility μ in the amorphous network polymers from poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) containing lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) at the concentration of [LiClO4]/[PO unit]=0.042 and 0.076 were investigated by means of complex impedance and time-of-flight methods. The σ values of the PPO–LiClO4 complexes reached 10−5 S cm−1 at 70 °C. The temperature dependence of σ deviated from a single Arrhenius behavior above a critical temperature (−1 °C and 11 °C) which approximately corresponded to the glass transition temperature Tg. The μ values were relatively high and changed from 10−6 to 10−5 cm2 V−1 s−1 in the temperature range of 40–100 °C. The Nernst–Einstein equation correlated μ with the ionic diffusion coefficient D. The Williams–Landel–Ferry equation with C1(approximately-equal-to)5 and C2(approximately-equal-to)30–50 held with a temperature dependence of D in the order of 10−8–10−7 cm2 s−1. The change in the number of ionic carriers n with temperature obeyed the Arrhenius equation with the activation energy of 0.26 and 0.34 eV. The degree of dissociation for LiClO4 in the PPO networks was 1–6%, and the dissociation was facilitated in the low LiClO4 concentration complex. The temperature dependence of σ above Tg was interpreted quantitatively in terms of n and μ.
