Notes: We demonstrate low-threshold lasing at 4 K in optically pumped hemispherical In0.2Ga0.8As single-quantum-well microcavities. The incident threshold pump power density is 11 kW/cm2 corresponding to an absorbed power density of about 320 W/cm2, and the measured spontaneous emission factor β is about 0.01.

Notes: Summary ATP-sensitive K+ channels were examined in sections of the hippocampus from patients with Alzheimer's disease and age-matched control subjects by means of quantitative autoradiography. ATP-sensitive K+ channels were labelled with the sulfonylurea, [3H]-glibenclamide, which is a potent blocker of these channels. The density of cells in the subiculum and the activity of choline acetyltransferase were determined in the same hippocampal tissue samples. In the hippocampal formation of control subjects, the density of high affinity [3H]-glibenclamide binding sites ranged from 17.6±0.9 pmoles/g in the presubiculum to 11.6±0.6 pmoles/g in the parvopyramidal layer of the presubiculum. There was no difference between Alzheimer patients and controls in the level of high affinity [3H]-glibenclamide binding in any hippocampal region although there was a marked loss of subicular cells (reduced by 29% compared to controls) and a reduction in choline acetyltransferase activity (reduced by 60% compared to controls). The results suggest that ATP-sensitive K+ channels are associated with elements in the hippocampus which are preserved in Alzheimer's disease.

Notes: Abstract The injection of 3-dehydroecdysone (3dhE, 5 μ/g), the major ecdysteroid secreted by the Y-organ of crayfishProcambarus clarkii, resulted in apolysis within about 5 days. The hormonal response at the molecular level was investigated by injection of the radio-labeled compound; within 3 h of injection of [3H]3dhE, most radio-isotope was found in the extracted epidermal tissues and identified as ecdysone, 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), and their 3α-hydroxy epimers. The biotransformation was undoubtedly performed in the peripheral area of the Y-organ. Cleavage of the polar conjugates, using an enzyme fromHelix pomatia, gave all of the above ecdysteroids including 3dhE. It was also found that the biosynthetic site of 3dhE was different from that of ecdysone at the subcellular level of the Y-organ.

Notes: Abstract We describe a family with hereditary adultonset leukodystrophy with sparing of the optic radiations, shown clinically, neuroradiologically and electrophysiologically. All five affected members developed their leukodystrophy in their fourth decade and clinical features steadily progressed. The sparing of the optic radiations is not typical of other leukodystrophies. We suggest that this is a new clinical entity.

Notes: Abstract A sequential updating method for assimilating Geosat altimeter data into an eddyresolving, quasi-geostrophic model is examined using simulated data of mesoscale features taken from a control run solution. The upper-layer streamfunction in the model is updated by the “altimeter” data on satellite tracks (at ∼110 km intervals) at times of observations (with 17-day cycles). To evaluate data suitability, the correlation between the data and the assimilation solution just before update is compared with the correlation between the two data with a 1-cycle separation: i.e., predictability is compared with persistence. The assimilation method is tested on mesoscale features such as linear Rossby waves, unstable mesoscale meanders in a jet and dipole eddies over realistic deep ocean topography. The assimilation method is successful for reconstructing the mesoscale features that evolve gradually or extend over more than one track. Assimilation is degraded by quick evolution of smaller scale features; i.e the unstable meanders that have short wavelengths and are not well captured by the altimeter with the low cross-track resolution, and the mesoscale features, whose lower layer component receives effects of bottom topography in the data but is underestimated due to inefficient downward transfer of the surface data in the assimilation.

Notes: Abstract Forty-three subjects were studied as for the relationship between anaerobic threshold (AT) and medical data including individual life style. Age, habit of exercise, and obesity are related to AT, showing a correlation coefficient of 0.533, 0.457 and 0.428, respectively. On the other hand, plasma lipid levels and alcohol are not so strongly related to AT, showing low correlation coefficient of 0.241 and 0.209 respectively. No correlation is found on the other factors such as FBS, Liver and blood pressure etc. Physical active life, commuting time, cumulative exercise hours in a month and work hours in a month are correlated to AT, showing correlation coefficient of 0.799, 0.734, 0.708 and 0.671, respectively, and even “more than once a month” frequency of execise has affected AT. In conclusion, AT is a useful index for evaluating daily life activity and prescribing exercise regimen.

Notes: Summary Ninety-eight patients with facial paralysis were studied by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) employing two types of Borrelia burgdorferi antigen, namely sonic extract and flagellum protein of B. burgdorferi. IgG or IgM antibodies were detected by sonic extract ELISA in 22 (32.4%) of 68 patients with Bell's palsy, and in 2 (10.0%) of 20 patients with varicella-zoster virus infection. This difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05). A positive reaction was more frequent with the sonic extract antigen, while the positive rates were significantly increaesd in Bell's palsy patients with hyperglobulinemia (P〈0.05). IgM antibodies were also significantly more frequently observed in patients who developed Bell's palsy between October and March (P〈 0.05). Since none of the patients had a history suggestive of Lyme disease, some kind of non-specific reaction and certain undefined factors linked to a positive reaction against B. burgdorferi could be involved in Bell's palsy.
