    Notes: We report results from experiments performed to measure and characterize the intense K-shell radiation from aluminum x-pinch plasmas at peak driving currents ranging from 280 kA to 1.0 MA. Single pulse aluminum K-shell (predominantly line radiation at 1.6–2 keV) x-ray yields ranged from 7.6 J at 290 kA to 240 J at 1.0 MA. In the range from 280 to 470 kA, the yield scales with current to the power of 3.6, whereas nonoptimized K-shell yields at 800 kA and 1.0 MA indicate a power of about 3 or higher.

    Notes: A plasma source based on an inductive breakdown of a supersonic gas puff is described. The source was developed to provide an anode plasma for an annular, extraction geometry, magnetically insulated ion diode. In this source, plasmas with densities of 1013 cm−3 were generated and accelerated to velocities of 20–30 cm/μs; plasma fluxes of 10–40 A/cm2 were obtained. Operating the source under the diode insulating field effect, plasma fluxes above 100 A/cm2 were observed. When the plasma source was used in conjunction with a magnetically insulated diode gap, intense ion beams with proton fluxes of more than 100 A/cm2, energies of 100 keV, and beam pulses longer than 1 μs were extracted.

    Notes: Twenty-one dogs with histopathologically confirmed hemangiosarcoma were evaluated by thoracic radiography for metastatic disease. All dogs had histopathologic examinations of the lungs within two weeks of thoracic radiography. Fourteen dogs had histopathologic evidence of pulmonary hemangiosarcoma; metastatic disease was detected radiographically in eleven of these dogs. The most common radiographic pattern was that of poorly defined small coalescing nodules (8 dogs); other radiographic patterns included well-circumscribed nodules (3 dogs) and alveolar infiltrates secondary to hemorrhage (2 dogs). Differential diagnoses for diffuse, poorly defined, coalescing pulmonary opacities should include hemangiosarcoma in addition to edema, lymphoma, systemic mycoses, fibrosis, allergy, toxicosis, and carcinomas.

    Notes: The propagation of an ion ring in a 2.5 m long, 0.30 m diam magnetized plasma column was studied using an axial array of magnetic probes and fast proton detectors, a microwave interferometer, and a grating spectrometer. The ring propagated with an initial axial velocity 3×106 m/sec, about four times the Alfvén speed in the plasma, and excited damped magnetosonic waves whose peak amplitude depended on the plasma return current. The plasma electrons were heated by about 1 eV in response to the ring, as measured by the Hγ line-to-continuum intensity ratio. This heating is primarily attributed to classical Coulomb collisions, although about 1%–10% can be attributed to the collective ring–plasma interaction. The collective interaction had no measurable effect on the dynamics of the ion ring, consistent with theoretical models, given the beam, plasma, and magnetic-field parameters in the experiment.

Heparin-associated thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (HATT) is an infrequently encountered syndrome characterized by ischemic necrosis of soft tissue and vital organs following anticoagulation with heparin. The syndrome is thought to be due to heparin-dependent platelet aggregation and thrombosis, which is mediated by pathologic immunoglobulins. Case Report. A 60-year-old man developed truncal livedo reticularis and ischemic necrosis of the left foot associated with thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (Die), and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia during intravenous heparin therapy. Skin biopsy from an area of livedo reticularis revealed fibrin thrombi in dermal blood vessels, which is characteristic of HATT. The diagnosis of HATT prompted discontinuation of heparin and a resulting rapid resolution of the livedo reticularis and hematologic abnormalities. No other potential causes of Die were identified, and, other than stopping heparin, no specific therapy was employed. Conclusions. Periodic monitoring of platelets should be performed on all patients receiving treatment with heparin, as early detection of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia followed by discontinuation of the drug may prevent life threatening thrombotic complications. HATT should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with livedo reticularis that occurs during heparin therapy.

    Notes: A magnetically embedded coaxial z-pinch configuration is proposed for the resonant photoexcitation laser at 228 A(ring) in Mg ix pumped by the 48.338 A(ring) line of Al xi. This laser configuration consists of an annular Al z-pinch plasma imploded (final electron density of about 1020 cm−3) onto an inner, Mg plasma (final electron density of about 1018 cm−3) on the axis. The Mg plasma is confined and stabilized by an axial magnetic Bz field, which is compressed to a final magnitude of about 130 T from an initially applied field of about 1 T by the Al implosion, thus serving to stabilize and physically separate the Al and Mg plasmas. Separate numerical simulations of the Al and Mg plasmas designed to guide exploratory experiments are reported. A 0D dynamic z-pinch model captures the Al implosion, including trapped Bz field and power losses due to line radiation. Initial conditions required to produce the intense Al xi pump line at 48.338 A(ring) are derived assuming an 800 kA, 100 ns implosion current pulse. Assuming a pinch length of 2 cm, a pump power of 3.5 GW/eV is predicted for the 48.338 A(ring) Al xi line. With the pump so defined, a separate, detailed atomic physics model is used to study the photoexcitation kinetics in the Mg ix lasant plasma. It is found that a gain of 1.0–1.5 cm−1 is obtainable on the 2s3d 1D2 - 2s4f 1F3 transition at 228 A(ring) in Mg ix.

    Notes: A proposal for a trial to provide heroin to dependent users in a controlled manner is currently being considered in the Australian Capital Territory. The political background to this proposal is outlined, as is the current ‘drug scene’. A Stage 1 examination found that a trial of controlled provision of heroin is feasible in principle and recommended a further stage (Stage 2) of feasibility investigations to explore the practicalities. The results of the Stage 1 investigations and the proposals for Stage 2 are incorporated into discussion about three important issues: the feasibility research process, the therapeutic relationship, and social control. These considerations have wider applicability, both for treatment services for illegal drug users generally and for informing drug policy debates. Much can be learnt from the feasibility considerations, whether or not a trial of the controlled provision of heroin eventuates in Australia.

    Notes: Lipase (triacyiglycerol acylhydrolase, EC 3.1.1.3) in oilseeds can be associated with either the lipid body or glyoxysomal membrane and can have various pH optima and substrate specificities. There is conflicting evidence for the subcellular location of lipase in gymnosperms, and little information exists on its activity characteristics. In this report, Pinus edulis (pinyon) was found to have an acid lipase, which was associated with the lipid body fraction and the activity of which increased during germination. Active lipase from the solubilized lipid body membrane was determined by gel permeation chromatography to have a molecular weight of 260 000. Further attempts to purify the active enzyme were unsuccessful. A lipid body membrane protein of 64 kDa which increased in parallel with lipase activity during germination was isolated by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. excised, and polyclonal antibodies were made against it. Using these antibodies, active lipase was immunoprecipitated from solution, thus indicating that the 64 kDa protein is a subunit of the lipase. Pinus edulis lipase had a pH optimum of ca 4.5. and it exhibited little specificity for triacyiglycerol substrates in vitro. The lipase was specific in activity against fluorometric substrates, with the highest activity against methyl-umbelliferyl laurale. Lipase activity was inhibited by high concentrations of non-ionic detergent. This lipid body acid lipase appears to be primarily responsible for lipid hydrolysis during pinyon germination.
