Notes: A battery-operated portable synchronous luminescence spectrofluorometer was developed for on-site analysis of groundwater or hazardous waste sites. The instrument is capable of either emission, excitation, or synchronous fluorescence measurements. The instrument is suited for trace analysis of important pollutants such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, creosotes, and polychlorinated biphenyls in complex mixtures. The ability to perform synchronous luminescence measurements on these samples can reduce the complexity of fluorescence spectra and help in rapid field site characterization. A description of the instrumental components is given and an evaluation of the instrument using anthracene and several oil samples is provided to illustrate the usefulness of the instrument.

Notes: Positron emission tomographic measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were used to investigate central nervous system correlates of fear and anxiety. Volunteers with symptomatic snake phobia were studied while exposed to visual phobogenic, aversive, and neutral stimuli. Anxiety ratings and the number of nonspecific electrodermal fluctuations increased as a function of phobic stimulation. Phobic, compared to neutral and aversive, stimulation elevated rCBF in the visual associative cortex. The basal ganglia were not activated more by phobic than aversive or neutral stimulation. However, cortical and thalamic rCBF were always correlated during phobic but not aversive or neutral stimulation. This indicates that the thalamus could be a relay station for phobic stimulus processing and affect.

Notes: [Auszug] Several phosphodiester antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) corresponding to untranslated and translated amino-terminal regions of NMDA-R1 messenger RNA7"9 were synthesized. An 18-mer, NMDARlAS/c, designed to correspond to nucleotides 4-21 (ref. 7), which directly follow the translation ...

Notes: Summary A case with an ill-defined arteriovenous malformation in the parieto-occipital region is presented. Open surgery was unsuccessful in removing the AVM totally, and treatment with gamma knife radiosurgery was then attempted. At 14 months after this treatment the AVM was believed to be obliterated. The patient had a new intracranial haemorrhage 59 months after radiosurgery. Renewed angiography showed an obvious AVM outside the previously irradiated area. Retrospective analysis of the angiogram at 14 months after radiosurgery revealed early filling of a draining vein as a sign of residual AVM at this time. Renewed radiosurgical treatment was performed. It is believed that an ill-defined margin, laminar flow, and effects of previous surgery might add to difficulties in a proper visualisation and delineation of an AVM. Further, a small remaining shunt may be overlooked if the angiogram is not carefully analysed or if the angiogram is of inferior quality. It should be stressed that partial or almost total obliteration of an AVM is no protection against rebleeding.

Notes: The tissue response to screw-shaped implants of commercially pure titanium was studied by light microscopy 3–180 days after insertion in the rabbit tibia. The implant site in the tibial metaphysis consisted mainly of cortical bone. Three days after implantation, osteoblasts, producing osteoid, were observed at the endosteal surface and elongated mesenchymal cells were present in the injury area. Some macrophages but rather few other inflammatory cells were identified. Multinuclear giant cells were in direct contact with the implant and formed an almost continuous layer along the surface from the 7th day. The number of giant cells decreased with time and with increased bone-titanium contact. Bone formation was never seen direct on the implant surface but was first observed at day 7 as a woven trabecular bone formed at the endosteal surface and extending towards the implant and as a solitary formation of woven bone close to the implant. The solitary bone matrix served as a base for surface osteoblasts which produced osteoid in a lamellar arrangement. With time the two types of newly formed bone fused and more bone filled the threads and became remodelled by bone remodelling units. Light microscopic morphometry in ground sections demonstrated that the bone/titanium contact and bone area in the threads increased with time up to 6 months after implantation

Notes: The tissue response to screw-shaped implants of commercially pure titanium was studied 3–180 days after insertion in the rabbit tibia by means of transmission electron microscopy. Red blood cells and scattered macrophages predominated at the implant surface after 3 days. At day 7 and later intervals, multinuclear giant cells were the cell type found at the implant surface protruding into the bone marrow and in areas with no bone-titanium contact. Osteoblasts or mesenchymal cells were rarely seen at the implant surface at any time period. Two modes of mineralization could be distinguished in the interface. Firstly, the typical mineralization of osteoid seams produced by osteoblasts. Secondly, an accumulation of scattered hydroxyapatite crystals in the unmineralized collagen matrix in the interface. Mineralized tissue was observed close to the implants surface from day 14. However, the innermost 2–20 μm were poorly mineralized although scattered hydroxyapatite crystals were present. The collagen fibrils did not reach the implant surface but were separated from it by an amorphous layer, being 0.3–0.5 μm thick which did not decrease in width with time. An electron-dense lamina limitans-like line containing mineral was observed between the amorphous layer and the bone tissue.

Notes: A specific assay is described for the confirmatory identification of danofloxacin residues in edible tissues of cattle and chicken. The assay utilizes on-line microbore high-performance liquid chromatography and pneumatically assisted electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Collision-induced dissociation of the danofloxacin protonated molecule results in two significant daughter ions. Monitoring both ions provides the specificity required for this confirmatory assay. Optimum electrospray and MS/MS operating conditions permitted the specific monitoring of danofloxacin and the confirmation of its residues in chicken and cattle liver extracts down to 50 ppb. The analysis of control liver or the commercially available antibacterial quinolones enrofloxacin and its metabolite ciprofloxacin gave no response under the assay conditions. The ratios of the two daughter ions were similar for danofloxacin standard solutions, fortified tissues and incurred tissues.
