    Notes: Recent experimental studies on homogeneous curved shear flow have shown that the imposition of strong mean flow curvature can cause a reversal of the turbulent shear stress, giving it the same sign as the gradient of mean velocity. Measurements of the coherence spectrum for these flows has revealed that this reversal is not uniform across all scales, and that eddies of different sizes can have opposite orientations and transport momentum in opposite directions. To evaluate the influence of linear mechanisms in the shear stress reversal a "rapid distortion'' type of model was applied to those flows which demonstrated this phenomenon. The model predicts that flow curvature causes a periodic modulation of the structure of sheared turbulence, and that the sign of the shear stress reverses because of these oscillations. The period of the modulation, in terms of the total strain, was found to decrease as the turning rate increases relative to the shearing rate. For those flows which showed a reversal of the shear stress, the range of experimental observation was only a fraction of the predicted period, but interpreting the observed development as a portion of an oscillation the measurements were found to be qualitatively similar to the predictions of the linear theory. In cases of stronger turbulence a self-preserving structure developed, before the shear stress could reverse, and the measurements deviated significantly from the predictions.

    Notes: A two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic code is developed to study the dynamic performance of a magnetically induced compression (MIC) gas puff. It is shown that the plasma temperature in the gas puff plenum can rise up to 10–12 eV. The maximum calculated sheath velocity is in the 107 cm/sec range. Calculations also show that the pressure in the gas puff plenum can rise by a factor of 570–1360, depending on the initial pressure. The mass flow rate and the injected gas density fall in the proper range for the operation of a Z pinch only when a relatively high initial pressure is used. The simulated ion-induced and light-induced voltages in the ion and light detectors provide means of comparing the numerical results with measurements. The calculated results are found to match reasonably well with the measured values.

    Notes: We have studied the response of a YBCO/PBCO/YBCO ramp-type junction to coherent radiation at 176 and 270 GHz. The I-V characteristic of the junction closely resembles the prediction of the RSJ model. The IcRn product of the junction is 0.25 mV at 5 K. The millimeter-wave radiation is coupled to the junction via a quasioptical structure that focuses the radiation onto the junction through a yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 substrate. At 176 GHz, we have observed as many as six Shapiro steps at the maximum power level of our Gunn oscillator-pumped frequency doubler. Shapiro steps are still clearly seen up to 65 K. The amplitudes of the zeroth, first, and second Shapiro steps, as functions of the square root of the radiation power, agree remarkably well with a Bessel function fit, indicating the junction is voltage-biased at the radiation frequency (rf). At 270 GHz, due to a combination of the heavy rf loss in the ZrO2 substrate and the lack of radiation power, we have observed only the first Shapiro step.

Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis showed intermediate changes. These immunological variations suggest that cutaneous tuberculosis forms a spectrum with strong cell-mediated immunity seen in lupus vulgaris, and weaker cell-mediated responses in scrofuloderma; tuberculosis verrucosa cutis is intermediate between the two.

    Notes: Summary A triple (1AL.1RS/1BL.1RS/1DL.1RS) and three double (1AL.1RS/1BL.1RS, 1AL.1RS/1DL.1RS, 1BL.1RS/1DL.1RS) wheat-rye 1RS translocation stocks were isolated from a segregating population using the Gli-1, Tri-1 and Sec-1 seed proteins as genetic markers. These stocks carried 42 chromosomes and formed the expected multivalents (frequency of 14–25%) at metaphase 1. They gave floret fertility ranging from 40–60%. These stocks were subsequently used to determine the genetic control of low-molecular-weight (LMW) glutenin subunits in ‘Chinese Spring’ and ‘Gabo’ by means of two-step one-dimensional SDS-PAGE. All of the B subunits and most of the C subunits of glutenin were shown to be controlled by genes on the short arms of group-1 chromosomes in these wheats. The other C subunits were not controlled by group-1 chromosomes. The triple translocation line served as a suitable third parent in producing test-cross seeds for studying the inheritance of the LMW glutenin subunits and gliadins in wheat cultivars, e.g. ‘Chinese Spring’ and ‘Orca’. The segregation patterns of the LMW glutenin subunits in these cultivars revealed that the subunits were inherited in clusters and that their controlling genes (Glu-3) were tightly linked with those controlling gliadins (Gli-1). The LMW glutenin patterns d, d and e in ‘Orca’ segregated as alternatives to the patterns a, a and a in ‘Chinese Spring’ controlled by Glu-A3, Glu-B3 and Glu-D3 loci on chromosome arms 1AS, 1BS and 1DS, respectively, thus indicating that these patterns were controlled by allelic genes at these loci.

    Notes: Summary Elevated erythrocyte cytosolic free calcium, and suppressed free magnesium and pH values are associated with the hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance of hypertension, obesity, and Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. To determine the role of insulin in this process, we utilized 19F- and 31P-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study the cellular ionic effects of insulin in vitro on normal human erythrocytes. Insulin elevated cytosolic free calcium levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The effect began at 10 μU/ml, peaked at 200 μU/ml, and continued at both the 500 μU/ml and 1000 μU/ml doses. At 200 μU/ml, free calcium levels rose from 24.6±2.5 nmol/l to a peak value at 120 min of 66.4±11 nmol/l (p〈0.05 vs basal), levels remaining elevated throughout the incubation (45.7±5.6 nmol/l at 60 min, and 47.9±9.1 nmol/l at 180 min, p〈0.05 vs basal, respectively). Similarly, insulin also increased intracellular free magnesium at all time points (basal: 177± 11 μmol/l; 60 min: 209±19 μmol/l; 120 min: 206±22 μmol/l; and 180 min: 202±12 μmol/l; p〈0.05 vs basal at all times). No insulin-induced changes in pH were observed. We conclude (i) that insulin in physiological concentrations may participate in regulating divalent cations in the mature human erythrocyte, (ii) that insulin per se cannot account for the previously described cellular ionic lesions of hypertension and diabetes, and (iii) that future clinical studies of cell ion metabolism should be conducted in the fasting state, be controlled for ambient circulating insulin levels, or both.
