Notes: Abstract The possibility that cerebral tumours may be graded by measuring T1 or T2 with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was studied. A consecutive series of patients with subsequently verified gliomas was enrolled, and studied with MR. Patients who had prior surgical, chemotherapeutic or steroid treatment were excluded. Single slice multiple saturation recovery and multiple spin echo techniques were used to measure T1, T2 and proton density in the tumour. In 33 patients with cerebral gliomas there were 5 grade I, 12 grade II, 7 grade III and 9 grade IV. T1 and T2 values tended to be smaller in grade I gliomas than in grades II, III and IV gliomas. Relaxation parameters overlapped considerably in tumours with different grades. Proton density values did not show much change between different grades of gliomas. Relaxation parameters cannot be used to determine tumour grade reliably.

Notes: Abstract Undoped and In-doped films of CdS were deposited at different temperatures by the chemical vapour deposition technique on glass and In-coated (30 nm) glass, respectively. Both kinds of film present a columnar microstructure, low porosity and good adherence to the substrate. The doped films have higher electron mobility values compared with the undoped ones. Shifts in the transmission spectra (Moss-Burstein effect) were observed with increased doping. Small crystals grew over the doped films during the deposition stage, mainly at the higher substrate temperatures.

Notes: Abstract The described procedure is purely instrumental. The aim is to determine efficiently the elemental composition of geological materials by neutron activation, using short-lived isotopes. Our procedure requires the use of a gamma-spectrometric system fitted with a real time correction module for the counting losses and the quasi absolute k0-method. Consequently, the two constraints inherent in the analysis of short-lived isotopes, i.e. decreasing dead time counting and relative standardization were overcome.

Notes: Abstract Our instrumental analytical method for an ultra-sensitive determination of Ir and Se in sediments and volcanic emission products is based on epithermal neutron activation analysis (ENAA) coupled with multiparameter coincidence spectrometry. An adequate setting of the energy paths and of the multiparameter coincidence spectrometry. An adequate setting of the energy paths and of the multiparameter analyzer allows a simultaneous counting of75Se and192Ir coincidences. This tool has been used to analyse different sediments sampled at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KTB) and volcanic samples in order to discuss the extra-terrestrial or volcanic origin of the Ir anomaly.

Notes: Flue Dusts Containing Heavy Metal Ions and Chloride.I. Phase Analysis, Model Experiments for RecyclingFour flue dusts from a cement factory, an electric-furnace steelmaking plant and a municipal waste plant were analyzed by powder diffraction methods. Chloride combines above all with alkali ions or heavy metal ions, especially yielding PbCl2 and KPb2Cl5. The controlled sublimation of these chloride compounds in open crucibles was developed and optimized in our laboratory. Between 850°C and 1150°C and at reaction times from 30 min up to 12 h, the chloride content decreases to below 0.1 wt-%. The sublimed phase mainly consists of alkali and lead chloride. Zinc is found in the flue dust as oxide and is enriched during this process. Recent investigations with a small waelz kiln give analogous results. With our procedure, the manufacturer by himself is able to exploit flue dusts containing a large amount of heavy metal elements and chloride which cannot be deposited. The remaining product contains mainly zinc oxide which can be recycled in the zinc industry or returned to the production process. The sublimed chloride compounds may be recycled in the potash industry.

Notes: Classically, the one-step synthesis of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) and related materials requires noninterfering polymerization modes to achieve distinct networks, held together by only physical entanglements. For the combination of (meth) acrylic and allylic monomers, both polymerizable by free radicals, a new in situ sequential synthesis for obtaining semi-IPNs is proposed. Using specific initiators that decompose at two different temperatures, refractive index measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis have shown that neat species are formed and that the two monomers do not copolymerize. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
