Notes: The structure of the turbulent boundary layer in a horizontal open channel was investigated experimentally by means of laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) and by flow visualization synchronized with the LDA. These experiments indicate that the dominant structures in the wall region are large scale streamwise vortices which originate at the wall and grow and expand into the outer flow region. The shape of the vortices is that of an expanding spiral, wound around a funnel which is laid sideways in the direction of flow. Most of the observations of wall turbulence phenomena made over the years, such as quasistreamwise vortices, ejections, and sweeps seem to be part of these funnel-shaped vortices.

Notes: Summary Somatic hybrid plants have been regenerated from fused protoplasts of a chlorophyll deficient mutant of H. muticus (2n=28) with wild type protoplasts of H. albus (2n=68). The inability of protoplasts of H. albus to regenerate was utilized in complementation with achlorophyllous, but regenerating, protoplasts of H. muticus for the selection of green somatic hybrid colonies and plants. The somatic hybrid plants showed intermediate morphological characters, and possessed 82–120 chromosomes, with a modal number of 96 which is also the amphidiploid complement of the two species. The isozyme patterns indicated the presence and expression of genes from both parents. The hybrid plants produced 33–78% viable pollen and set viable seeds upon selfing and backcrossing in a directional manner.

Notes: Abstract A new polyazoxyphosphonate was synthesized by reaction of 4-4′-dihydroxyazoxybenzene and dichlorophenyl phospine oxide by interfacial polycondensation using a phase transfer catalyst. The polymer was characterized and the results obtained by various analytical techniques indicate that it is mostly amorphous, low molecular weight and soluble in organic solvents such as DMF, DMAC, NMP, etc. The high char residue (∼40%) and limiting oxygen index indicate flame retardancy of the polymer which is due to phosphorus. Thermal stability of this polymer is moderate. TheT g appears to be at 152°C.

Notes: Abstract The thermophilic mouldMalbranchea pulchella var.sulfurea TMD-8 produced extracellular xylanases in wheat straw hemicellulose as well as wheat straw. This mould utilized xylose less efficiently than glucose. Mycelial extracts contained xylose isomerase, xylose reductase, and xylitol dehydrogenase. Xylose isomerase was less thermostable than that from other microorganisms. However, xylitol dehydrogenase and xylose reductase were relatively more thermostable in comparison with these enzymes from other microorganisms. The affinity of xylose isomerase for xylose was very high (Km 10mM), while that of xylose reductase was low (Km 23.5mM). The xylitol dehydrogenase exhibited relatively high affinity for xylitol (Km 0.02mM). The activity of this enzyme, however, declined steeply, in the alkaline range. This is the first report on the occurrence of three intracellular enzymes, xylose isomerase, xylose reductase, and xylitol dehydrogenase in a thermophilic mould, which play an important role in xylose metabolism.

Notes: Abstract Short-term (1 year) outcome of 66 male patients with psychosexual dysfunction was studied in the context of patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. A combination of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation was the most common diagnosis. Long-term (7 years) outcome of this cohort was evaluated in relation to short-term outcome. Improvement in the short-term indicated favorable long-term outcome. Initial dropout was associated with chronic and continuous sexual dysfunctioning.

Notes: Abstract Methylparathion and Benthiocarb inhibition of N2 fixation in the cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum was reversed by Ca2+ at 1 mm but not at 0.1 mm. The concentration of intracellular Ca2+ was relatively high in the presence of these pesticides when 1 mm Ca2+ was also present, indicating that intracellular Ca2+ may participate in protecting nitrogenase activity against Methylparathion and Benthiocarb.
