Notes: Abstract Phonon anomaly was observed below 140 K for the absorption area (lnA) and the isomer shift (δ) plotted against the temperature (T) in the119Sn Mössbauer study of the Bi2Sr2Ca(Cu0.995Sn0.005)2O8−y superconductor (glass-ceramic,T c(on)=86 K), which was prepared by heat treatment of the glassy sample. The anomaly suggests that the softening (quenching) of the lattice vibration causes the superconducting transition, as was observed in several YBa2(Cu, Sn)3O7−y superconductors. Fitting of the theoretical curve for the normal phonon of the “combined Debye and Einstein” model to the lnA versusT andδ versusT plots yieldedΘ D andΘ E of 240 and 140 K, respectively. These results suggest that the probe (Sn4+) was located at the interstitial site close to the Cu site, and the softening of the Cu site vibration could be detected before the superconducting transition took place. Disordered structure seems to be favorable for the detection of phonon anomaly in the Bi system.

Notes: Abstract Ar+-laser (λ=488 nm) irradiation of calcium gallate (CG) glass with the composition of 60CaO·39Ga2O3·Fe2O3 resulted in a distinct decrease in the IR transmittance (T) due to the formation of crystalline CaGa2O4 and CaGa4O9 phases. The Mössbauer spectrum of non-irradiated glass comprised a broad doublet due to distorted Fe3+(Td) withδ, Δ, andΓ of 0.20, 1.33, and 1.00 mm s−1, respectively. An additional doublet due to Fe3+(Td) was observed in the Ar+-irradiated glass andδ, Δ, andΓ were 0.17, 1.32, and 0.75 mm s−1, respectively. A decrease inT was also observed after the60Co γ-ray irradiation with doses ≥105Gy, and the precipitation of CaO, Ga2O3, and CaGa4O7 phases was confirmed by X-ray diffraction.

Notes: Abstract The ootype ofParagonimus ohirai was studied by both scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The ootype wall in 20-week-old worms from single infections was similar in its epithelial cell architecture and components to that of mated worms at 10 weeks postinfection. The lining epithelium consisted of a single layer of nucleated cells. The cytoplasm displayed a variety of organelles such as occasional Golgi complexes, well-developed annulate lamellae, frequent lysosomes, abundant mitochondria, and numerous ribosomes, suggesting high activities of intracellular synthesis and digestion. The former three organelles were generally located in the apical cytoplasm protruding into the lumen and may be significant in participating in regulation of egg formation. The present comparative studies suggest that the ootype epithelium can mature even by single infections and that the organized intracellular activities remain developed in single worms even after prolonged infection.

Notes: Abstract A determination procedure has been developed for210Bi and210Po in environmental samples and was applied for pine needles. Bismuth-210 and210Po separated from the parent nuclide210Pb as BiOCl precipitate were extracted simultaneously by TOPO/toluene containing PPO and POPOP. The separation of210Bi and210Po from210Pb was almost satisfactory. The activity of210Bi+210Po in the TOPO/toluene was measured periodically by liquid scintillation counting for about 20 days after separation. The time course of the decreasing pattern of the activity was determined by the initial activity ratio210Po/210Bi. The decreasing pattern of the activity was compared with theoretical patterns, and best estimates for210Po and210Bi were obtained by non-linear least-squares fitting. The activities of210Bi and210Po were determined for one-year and two-year old pine needles fro the same pine tree, and weathering half-time and deposition rate of these nuclides was discussed.
