Notes: Abstract Filmwise non-equilibrium condensation of methanol vapour is investigated on a shock-tube endwall behind a reflected shock wave. The theoretical prediction of a transition phenomenon during the growth of a liquid film is experimentally demonstrated: the film grows approximately in proportion to the time at the early stages after the reflection of the shock wave and, after a transition period, it grows in proportion to the square root of the time. The condensation parameter of the vapour is obtained from the conformity between experiment and theory. It is found that the condensation parameter of the methanol vapour is of the magnitude of one tenth of the value for the complete capture of the molecules on the liquid surface.

Notes: Abstract The intraspecific fusion frequencies obtained with the direct selection method on a semi-synthetic regeneration medium between strains of B. subtilis and B. licheniformis were distribution from 9.9×10-2 to 4.5×10-3, which was one or two orders higher than those of interspecific recombinations between B. subtilis and B. licheniformis. The regeneration media were also useful for selecting interspecific transformants from plasmid carrier to non-carrier. This selection could be used as a primary selection method for inter-and intraspecific recombinants obtained by protoplast fusion.

Notes: Abstract Competent cells of Bacillus subtilis were transformed with DNA from gently lysed protoplasts. Significant linkages among markers separated by distances of approximately 2.3% of the total chromosome were found, which have not been detected for conventional transformation. In comparison to previous reports, enhanced plasmid transformation was observed [4.0×107 transformants per μg DNA (one transformant per 5×104 molecules added)], when competent cells were transformed with DNA from lysed protoplasts harboring pUB110.

Notes: When fine-sized 45ZnO·55P2O5 or 50ZnO·50P2O5 glass powders were mixed withdistilled water, hydration immediately occurred, resulting in the formation of viscous hydrogels. 31PMAS-NMR spectra showed that the hydrogels contain orthophosphates and long-chain phosphates;no significant differences in their structures between the hydrogels were shown. The 45ZP gel and50ZP gel showed high conductivities (e.g., 9.9 and 2.8 mS/cm, respectively, at 30°C). Theconductivities were related to the proton amount in the hydrogel; the amount in the 45ZP gel waslarger than that in the 50ZP gel. Electric double-layer capacitors (EDCs) were prepared usingelectrolytes consisting of the hydrogels. The specific capacities of the EDC cell for the 45ZP gel and50ZP gel were 2.40 and 2.06 F/g, respectively. The possibility as an EDC electrolyte may be related toproton conductivities of the hydrogels

Notes: The machining of metal dies involves a variety of processes that include grinding, polishing andelectrical discharge machining in addition to various cutting processes such as turning, boring, and milling. The precise machining of complex dies, particularly in deep machining, has largely been done byelectrical discharge machining in the past, because the use of end mills and other cutting tools for suchwork has been difficult. In recent years, however, problems such as low machining efficiency and thecreation of an affected layer have made the use of end mill cutting tools the general approach to this task.In the research reported here, our objective was to establish guidelines for the optimum design of smallradius ball end mills for the deep machining of dies by systematic investigation of the cutting toolcharacteristics, which is to say the rotational behavior, cutting resistance, actual rate of depth of cut andmachining accuracy of small radius ball end mills. Here, the guidelines obtained for ultra-deep, highly-accurate machining that is applicable to machiningprograms and is based on quantitative results for amounts of tool wear and tool deflection thatobtained using the optimum tool shape reported earlier are presented

Notes: To examine the effects of viewing the television film, “The Day After”, a questionnaire designed to measure attitudes, cognitions, and feelings about the threat of nuclear war was administered to 537 subjects before and after the airing of the film. A factor analysis of pre-viewing test responses yielded a seven-factor solution. Pre–post factor scores indicated increased worry and concern about nuclear war, decreased belief that nuclear war could be survived, increased concern about the occurrence of nuclear war, and increased agreement with views espoused by the nuclear-freeze movement only among subjects who had viewed the film. Subjects who chose not to view the film differed from those who did watch it in terms of greater denial and less involvement in nuclear related activities. The efficacy of the film as an agent of attitude change and the utility of the present questionnaire were discussed.

Notes: To investigate the relationship of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy with dysproteinemia, we performed DNA analysis using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Southern blot, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemical analysis of lymph nodes in five patients who were followed up and biopsied more than once. In the course of the disease, nodal architecture diminished, cellular atypia worsened, and clear cells increased in number. In the DNA analysis of the receptor genes, the clonal population increased in number. EBV nucleic acid sequences were found by either PCR or in situ hybridization in all examined nodes. The number of EBV-positive cells varied widely among the cases and throughout the course of the disease in the same patients. The analysis of EBV terminal repeats or lymphocyte-determined membrane antigen genes showed polyclonal populations of EB-infected cells. EBV-positive cells possessed intermediate- to large-sized nuclei, and the cells with large nuclei, especially, expressed latent membrane protein of EBV. These large cells varied in number among the cases. Double-labelling immunohistochemistry/in situ hybridization studies demonstrated that most of the EBV-positive cells expressed B-cell antigen (CD20). The presence of EBV seems to be associated with the selective defects of the immune system, rather than with the direct pathogenesis of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy.

Notes: This paper describes two types of photodiode arrays using indium-tin-oxide/amorphous silicon (ITO/a-Si:H) junctions for a contact-type linear image sensor. One type is a photodiode array of separated ITO electrodes, an a-Si:H stripe layer, and a common metal (Cr) electrode. The other consists of a common ITO electrode, an a-Si:H stripe layer, and separated Cr electrodes. We investigated the bias dependence of the photocurrent and its spatial distribution for the two types of diode array. Our results indicate that the photocarriers generated around the element for a common ITO electrode type deteriorate the resolving power of the diode array, which can be improved by using separated ITO electrodes. A separated ITO electrode increases the modulation transfer function and the fineness of linear image sensors.
