    Notes: A theoretical investigation was made on the effect of contact barriers on space-charge-limited (SCL) current injection in impurity-band-conduction (IBC) photodetectors. Parmenter and Ruppel [J. Appl. Phys. 30, 1548 (1959)] considered the effect of contact barriers on SCL current injection in insulators. They solved the steady-state, one-dimensional transport equations, obtaining the solution in terms of integrals, which they evaluated for certain limiting cases. We have modified their approach by using the current injection ratios at the contacts as boundary conditions. This is a very general formulation that can be used for any type of contact barrier. We then applied this technique to model contact barriers in IBC devices. The fact that the IBC hopping mobility is several orders of magnitude smaller than the electron mobility enables us to evaluate the integrals and obtain a closed form solution to the transport equations. Calculated results include current versus voltage behavior, electrostatic potential and electric field versus position for a given bias. It is concluded that the injected electron current is dominant for the store-mode applied bias.

    Notes: To study the mechanism of amyloid deposition, the nature of amyloid proteins formed in experimental murine amyloidosis, was examined. Spleen specimens, 15–60mg, were homogenized and extracted using aqueous acidic acetonitrile, in a recently developed procedure, making it possible to obtain amyloid proteins from minute amounts of tissue. The extracted material, 1.5–4mg, was analysed by Western blotting and ELISA using antibodies recognizing differentially proteins AA and SAA. Two immunoreactive proteins of 8 and 12 KDa were isolated and subjected to amino acid analysis and N-terminal sequence determination. The results of immunochemical and chemical examination showed that the 8 and 12 KDa proteins represented proteins AA and SAA, respectively.The data obtained provide new direct evidence for SAA deposition in tissues during murine amyloidogenesis.

    Notes: : Diquat herbicide and rhodamine WT dye were applied in a lake to three 1.6 ha plots either with a polymer, which reportedly aids in sinking and confinement of aquatic herbicides, or without a polymer. Diquat and dye concentrations were measured at three different depths in the water column within the plots during the first three hours after application to determine vertical distribution of diquat and dye, and in composite samples at fixed distances from the plot up to 168 hours after application to determine movement out of the treated plots. Diquat and dye were homogeneous in the water column when no polymer was used, but were concentrated near the surface when polymer was used. This distribution may have resulted from temperature stratification. Polymer did not affect movement of diquat or dye out of the plots. The half-lives of diquat within the plots were 25 (SE=6.2) hr, 39 (SE=4.3) hr, and 25 (SE=2.0) hr. Forty-six percent of samples collected at the edges of the plots did not contain detectable diquat residues and only 66 percent of those samples with detectable diquat contained greater than the potable water tolerance (10 ppb). Diquat was not found in any samples 168 hours after application 61 m or farther from the edge of the plots. Dye and diquat concentrations were weakly correlated within and outside the plots. Dye half-lives were consistently higher than diquat, which suggests that the herbicide was removed from the water by plants and sediments more rapidly than dye.

    Notes: Abstract A group of five different types of reusable and disposable hot drink cups have been analyzed in detail with respect to their overall energy costs during fabrication and use. Electricity generating methods and efficiencies have been found to be key factors in the primary energy consumption for the washing of reusable cups and a less important factor in cup fabrication. In Canada or the United States, over 500 or more use cycles, reusable cups are found to have about the same or slightly more energy consumption, use for use, as moulded polystyrene foam cups used once and then discarded. For the same area paper cups used once and discarded are found to consume less fossil fuel energy per use than any of the other cup types examined. Details of this analysis, which could facilitate the comparative assessment of other scenarios, are presented.

    Notes: Abstract This study describes the properties of an inactivated subunit antigen preparation from varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-infected MRC-5 cells by treatment with detergent and formaldehyde, ultracentrifugation over sucrose and acetone precipitation. The method preserved the antigenicity of VZV proteins and several VZV-specific glycoproteins, while virus DNA was less than 20 pg/250 μg protein — a putative vaccine dose. The vaccine was immunogenic in rabbits and stimulated antibodies to the major capsid protein as well as to glycoproteins; an immunoprecipitin was shared with a known immune human serum. The preparation contained no infectious VZV with no evidence of side effects in a rabbit or in five human vaccinees during a follow-up period of 6–10 years.
