Notes: The main trophic interrelations were analysed in 12 species which represent 93% of the total catch from a beach seine fishery developed in Celestún, Yucatán. The diet was determined based on monthly samples over 4 yr. Five different trophic guilds were found on the basis of feeding preferences: microcrustacean and polychaete feeders, piscivores, omnivores and herbivores. For microcrustacean feeders Orthopristis chrysoptera, Eucinostomus gula, E. argenteus and Opisthonema oglinum the diet is narrow with a large overlap between. For polychaete feeders, Arius felis, A. melanopus and Haemulon plumieri diet is broad with the higher overlap between the catfishes. Among piscivores, Bardiella chrysura and Harengula jaguana have a high overlap between them, but a lower one with other species from the community. Among omnivores Lagodon rhomboides has the broadest diet and is considered to be a generalist while Acanthostraceon quadricornis is a specialist having a very narrow diet and a lower value of overlap with the other species. Finally, Archosargus rhomboidalis is a herbivore with the narrowest niche breadth and lowest overlap. In addition to a description of diets and trophic inter-relations, the results emphasize the importance to the beach seine fishery of the benthic food resources.

Notes: Abstract Several cyclodextrins, surfactants, and a series of three organic solvents-methanol, isoamylic alcohol, and hexanol-with different polarities and viscosities, were used to study the influence of the microenvironment on the fluorescent behavior of three diuretics-furosemide, triamterene, and piretanide. We concluded that on going from methanol to hexanol, the fluorescence lifetime of furosemide from 0.91 to 2.10 ns, that of triamterene from 4.54 to 4.44 ns, and that of piretanide from 5.24 to 10.37 ns. At 40 MHz, the phase shifts (excitation/emission) produced by furosemide, triamterene, and piretanide were 12.0, 29.6, and 30.2° in methanol and 27.8, 48.1, and 69.0° in hexanol. A three-factor, three-level factorial design allowed us to establish a calibration matrix of the three diuretics that covered the three ranges from 10 to 40, 1.5 to 6, and 0.1 to 0.4 μM for furosemide, piretanide, and triamterene, respectively. Data processing incorporated PLS adjustment values. The function was fitted to a phase-resolved fluorescence intensity at the three phase angles selected. Percentages recoveries were from 88 to 115%.

Notes: Abstract Coexistence of NADPH-diaphorase with vasopressin and oxytocin was studied in the magnocellular neurosecretory nuclei of the rat hypothalamus by use of sequential histochemical and immunocytochemical techniques in the same sections. Coexistence was found in all the nuclei examined (supraoptic, paraventricular, circular, fornical, and in some isolated neurons located in the hypothalamic area between the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei). The ratios of neurons expressing both markers (NADPH-diaphorase and vasopressin, NADPH-diaphorase and oxytocin) in each of the nuclei were very similar. Although further studies must be carried out, the partial coexistence found in all nuclei suggests that NADPH-diaphorase is probably not related to general mechanisms involving vasopressin and oxytocin, but rather in specific functions shared by certain hypothalamic neuronal cell populations.

Notes: Abstract Pure crystalline Hf and Fe powders were mixed and milled under an argon atmosphere. The evolution of the system with milling time was followed with Mössbauer effect spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that in the first stages an amorphous Fe-rich alloy was gradually formed together with a solid solution of Hf in Fe beyond the solubility limit.

Notes: Abstract Al-Fe multilayers have been mixed by thermal treatment and their evolution followed by conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The initial and final states have been characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. The results are compared with those previously obtained in the ion beam mixing of similar systems.
