    Notes: We present an overview of the long-term adaptation of hippocampal neurotransmission to cholinergic and GABAergic deafferentation caused by excitotoxic lesion of the medial septum. Two months after septal microinjection of 2.7 nmol α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-4-propionate (AMPA), a 220% increase of GABAA receptor labelling in the hippocampal CA3 and the hilus was shown, and also changes in hippocampal neurotransmission characterised by in vivo microdialysis and HPLC. Basal amino acid and purine extracellular levels were studied in control and lesioned rats. In vivo effects of 100 mm KCl perfusion and adenosine A1 receptor blockade with 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (DPCPX) on their release were also investigated. In lesioned animals GABA, glutamate and glutamine basal levels were decreased and taurine, adenosine and uric acid levels increased. A similar response to KCl infusion occurred in both groups except for GABA and glutamate, which release decreased in lesioned rats. Only in lesioned rats, DPCPX increased GABA basal level and KCl-induced glutamate release, and decreased glutamate turnover. Our results evidence that an excitotoxic septal lesion leads to increased hippocampal GABAA receptors and decreased glutamate neurotransmission. In this situation, a co-ordinated response of hippocampal retaliatory systems takes place to control neuron excitability.

    Notes: Summary Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) causes more than 90% mortality in adult rabbits. In this study, the cDNA of the VP60 coding sequence of RHDV was cloned under the control of the polyhedrin and p10 promoters of baculovirus to be expressed in insect cells. The expression of RHDV VP60 under the control of the p10 promoter was 5–10 times higher than using the polyhedrin promoter. The p10-derived VP60 was able to assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs). RHDV VLPs were successfully used to protect rabbits against the disease even at doses as low as 0.5 µg when injected intramuscularly or sub-cutaneously. The ability to elicit an immune response was independent of the adjuvant or the route of immunization. Remarkably, oral administration of RHDV VLPs efficiently induced protecting antibodies to RHD at doses as low as 3 µg. The use of binary ethylenimine for the stabilization of the VLPs was decisive for eliciting a good oral immunity. This report demonstrates the potential use of these procapsids in obtaining RHD oral vaccines and opens the door to the use of these capsids for the prevention of the disease in wild animals. Therefore, a new, and potentially important application of recombinant VLPs in the induction of protective immunity by the oral route is foreseen.

    Notes: Abstract  Different DNA marker types were used to construct linkage maps in coconut (Cocos nucifera L.; 2n = 32) for the two parents of the cross Malayan Yellow Dwarf (MYD) × Laguna Tall (LAGT). A total of 382 markers was sufficient to generate 16 linkage groups for each parent. The total genome length corresponded to 2226 cM for the LAGT map and 1266 cM for the MYD map with 4–32 markers per linkage group. Common markers allowed the association of 9 linkage groups for the two parents MYD and LAGT. QTL analysis for the trait early germination identified six loci. These QTLs correlate with early flowering and yield, representing characters which are important in coconut breeding. The co-segregation of markers with these QTLs provides the first opportunity for marker-assisted selection in coconut breeding programmes.

    Notes: Overall rates for the free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with ethyl acrylate in the presence of low concentrations of ZnCl2 have been determined at 50°C. The rate of copolymerization Rp depends on both the ZnCl2 concentration and the monomer feed composition. Relative copolymerization rates Rp/R0p where R0p is the rate of copolymerization in the absence of complexing agent in the reaction mixture, show a minimum for intermediate feed compositions, independently of the ZnCl2 concentration. On the basis of the results obtained, a conventional copolymerization mechanism is proposed for this system in which free and complexed species of both acrylic monomers participate.

    Notes: Reactivity ratios for the free-radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with ethyl acrylate in the presence of low concentrations of ZnCl2 are analyzed at different polymerization temperatures, 35,50, and 65°C. The different tendencies of the two monomers toward the formation of molecular complexes with the metal halide modify the homopropagation and cross-propagation coefficients and the results obtained seem to indicate a conventional cross-propagation mechanism in which both free and complexed species of acrylic monomers participate.
