Notes: The egg-laying sequence of Raja clavata from aquarium observations, has been found to consist of a 2-day cycle and to last less than 7 weeks. The mean body length, disc width, and weight of the newly-hatched rays were 118, 75 mm and 8.92 g respectively and the sex ratio was 1: 1.

Notes: The structure and vibrational modes of CO adsorbed on Cu(001) have been investigated by helium atom scattering (HAS). Below coverages of θ=0.13, CO adsorbs as isolated molecules, and the time of flight (TOF) spectra of helium atoms scattered from the surface are characterized by energy losses and gains of 3.94 ± 0.07 meV. With the aid of isotope shift measurements, this mode is unambiguously assigned to the frustrated translation mode of the adsorbed CO. In the c(2×2) structure (θ=0.5) this mode is found to show dispersion in both the 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 azimuths with frequencies ranging from 3.9 meV at the zone origin to 5.6 meV at the zone boundary. A simple force constant model with a single nearest neighbor force constant within the layer is found to be sufficient to describe the dispersion. For coverages slightly less than θ=0.5 the angular distributions of scattered helium atoms show features characteristic of vacancies in the overlayer. In the TOF spectra an additional nondispersive mode at about 4 meV is also seen and assigned to the frustrated translation of CO molecules adjacent to the vacancies in the c(2×2) overlayer. The Rayleigh mode is clearly observed in the c(2×2) structure but is found to decrease slightly in frequency while the longitudinal resonance, which is especially prominent on the clean surface, disappears completely. The results are interpreted with the aid of slab calculations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Male Scyliorhinus canicula possess a longer and narrower mouth than females resulting in pronouced sexual dimorphism with respect to the mouth length/mouth width ratio (0.49 and 0.43, respectively). Significant sexual differences in the girth of the head and pre-oral, pre-branchial and head lengths were also recorded. Males were found to have longer teeth than females. Reasons for these differences are discussed.

Notes: Summary Variation in the haemagglutinin (HA) gene of influenza A (H3N2) viruses isolated in the U. K. and abroad from 1992–1994, was determined by nucleotide sequencing of the HA1 domain of the HA gene. Viruses isolated in the U.K. early in the 1992–93 season were from the A/Beijing/353/89 lineage and were replaced later that season by viruses from the A/Beijing/32/92 lineage. Viruses from the new lineage continued to be isolated during the 1993–94 season, but were heterogeneous. Most of these isolates were more closely related to an A/Beijing/32/92 variant, A Hong Kong/23/92, but could be distinguished into three groups by serology (of which one group was circulating during the previous season) and four groups based on sequence variation in the HA gene. However, phylogenetic analysis of antigenically-distinct isolates showed that the HA gene is evolving along one lineage. Sequence analysis identified mainstream, subgroup and strain specific amino acid substitutions. There was a broad correlation between the observed amino acid changes and the antigenic sites of the HA. The results of this study highlight the value of regular molecular analysis of circulating viruses.

Notes: Abstract Monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) is an effective herbicide used for the control of Xanthium strumarium (cocklebur), a serious weed problem in cotton production. Recently, MSMA-resistant cocklebur was reported, which reduced MSMA effectiveness in the cocklebur control strategy. The mode of action of MSMA may involve the reduction of the pentavalent arsenic in MSMA to a trivalent form, which may then form a complex with sulfhydryl-containing enzymes. Dimercaptopro-panesulfonic acid (DMPS) chelates trivalent arsenic, resulting in a nontoxic complex. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of DMPS and MSMA on the growth of in vitro grown cocklebur shoot and callus tissues. Lateral and terminal shoots were grown on basal Murashige and Skoog medium containing 6.25 mg L−1 (0.0428 mm) MSMA alone and with various concentrations of DMPS. Callus was cultured on basal callus medium also containing 6.25 mg L−1 MSMA alone and an equimolar concentration of DMPS. Shoot injury symptoms, dry root weight, and fresh weight of callus were recorded. Susceptible cocklebur shoots showed severe discoloration and death when treated with MSMA. Resistant shoots and cultured shoot tips were not adversely affected. DMPS alone did not inhibit growth of these tissues. Callus induced from susceptible tissue was inhibited by MSMA and DMPS alone. In all combinations of DMPS and MSMA tested, DMPS did not counteract the MSMA response. Thus, the pentavalent form of arsenic in MSMA apparently is not reduced to the trivalent form by the plant and hence is not involved in the mechanism of action
