    Notes: We report the results from an investigation of the effects of variations in layer thicknesses during the growth of semiconductor Bragg mirrors on their reflectivity spectra. Different types of variations are investigated and an effort is made to point out the sources of such errors in a typical growth process. It is expected that this study will shed light on the critical control parameters for very highly reflecting mirrors and help the interpretation of the measured spectra from a finished growth run and the identification of the possible sources of deviations from the ideal structure. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The room-temperature photoinduced switching of an InGaAs/AlAs resonant-tunneling diode is demonstrated. When illuminated at an irradiance of greater than 20 W cm−2 using 1.3 μm radiation, the resonant-tunneling diode switches from a high-conductance to a low-conductance electrical state and exhibits a voltage swing of 600 mV. The switching characteristics are reversible and, in the absence of light, the detector returns to its original high conductance operating state. Small-signal optical measurements performed with the device biased prior to resonance demonstrate a 3 dB bandwidth of ∼1.5 GHz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new dual-wavelength, resonant-cavity photodiode is described. It has previously been shown that the resonant-cavity structure can achieve high quantum efficiencies in a relatively narrow spectral region with thin absorbing regions. In this letter, a dual wavelength mirror is incorporated into the cavity to achieve operation in two wavelength regions. Peak external quantum efficiencies greater than 50% were demonstrated at 730 and 910 nm. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Virgil, in his description of the establishment of a new city by Aeneas for those Trojans who wished to remain in Sicily, is thinking of the Roman practice of colonial foundation: ‘Meanwhile Aeneas marked out the city with the plough and allocated the houses (by lot)’. We may note the personal role of the founder, the ploughing of the ritual first furrow, the organized grants to the settlers and the equality of treatment implied in the use of lot (sortiri). Virgil was writing at the end of the first century B.C. at a time of great activity in land distribution, but the Romans had been founding colonies from the mid fourth century. Each colony involved the creation of an urban area and the settlement of people on the surrounding agricultural land, and so perpetuated the city state, which was central to ancient life and culture. Indeed a colony was a smaller image of Rome itself. In the early Republic, colonies, either of Latins or of Roman citizens, were established on the periphery of Roman territory, largely for military and strategic reasons. Between 200 and 173 B.C. more than 40,000 may have received plots of land, amounting to about 1,000 square miles of territory. Later, the motives for colonial foundations became more complex, being closely connected with increasing economic and political problems. There can have been few more important aspects in the development of colonies than the need to find land for discharged troops. These in the main were rank and file soldiers who would expect equal shares in land allocations.

    Notes: Successful integration of the spot intensities on a single-crystal X-ray diffraction image depends on the ability to predict the spot positions accurately throughout the image. In some image-plate systems, there are spatial distortions, resulting from imperfections in the scanning system, for which corrections need to be made before a satisfactory match between observed and predicted spot positions can be achieved. A procedure to correct for this spatial distortion as part of the refinement procedure used in processing Laue diffraction data is described. The spatial distortion is modelled using polynomial functions. For the test and other images considered, with a pixel size of 88 μm, the root-mean-square (r.m.s.) deviations between the observed and predicted spot positions were reduced from up to 1.4 pixels to 0.4 pixels or less for the 400 or so spots used in the refinements and good predictions throughout the images were obtained.

    Notes: The Laue Data Module (LDM) has been defined and implemented in Fortran as the basis for new developments in the processing of Laue X-ray diffraction data. It provides a program-independent way of handling, storing and accessing the parameters required in the initial stages of Laue data processing. The program-independent Laue Reflection List (LRL) and associated functions have also been developed. The way in which these two developments may be used in application programs and as the basis for developing further program-independent Laue-data processing functions is described.

    Notes: The XDL_VIEW toolkit is designed to provide a simple means of including X-windows-based functions into existing programs and to provide the basis for developing new programs. Its use does not require any detailed knowledge of X-windows and it is designed, in particular, to meet the needs of the Fortran programmer. Many of the functions provided are of general purpose but some functions designed for crystallographic programs are included. The current applications of the package are mainly in the field of protein crystallography.

    Notes: The parameters dmin and λmin, essential for the processing of synchrotron X-ray Laue patterns, can be efficiently estimated by examination of the distribution of measured intensities as a function of d spacing and wavelength, respectively. A procedure that can be carried out automatically as one step in the data processing has been tested with Laue data sets from an organometallic compound and two proteins.

It incorporates facilities for image display and measurement, simulation of Laue diffraction patterns, determination of the crystal orientation and refinement of the orientation and other variable parameters to obtain a good fit between predicted and observed spot positions in preparation for the integration of the spot intensities. The program is distributed as part of the Daresbury Laboratory Laue Software Suite.
