Notes: New Zealand is currently experiencing a liberal and competitive economic environment which has led to a greater investment interest in corporate securities. Likewise, New Zealand firms are also developing strategies to attract investors, for example, through voluntary disclosure of information. Therefore, the level of information voluntarily disclosed by New Zealand companies is of interest to prospective investors. The purpose of this study is to examine empirically the relationship between five firm-specific characteristics and the general level of accounting information voluntarily disclosed by companies listed on New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZSE). In this study the a priori expectations are based on agency theory. The five firm-specific characteristics examined are: firm size, leverage, assets-in-place, type of auditor, and foreign listing status. The results obtained from cross-sectional regression show that firm size, foreign listing status and leverage are significantly related to the extent of voluntary disclosure. In contrast assets-in-place and type of auditor are not significant explanatory variables. A study of this type would be of particular relevance to accounting policy makers because, inter alia, it helps them in (a) understanding corporate disclosure behaviour, (b) explaining why firms adopt certain disclosure strategies, and (c) developing a coherent and acceptable set of mandatory disclosure requirements.

Notes: A total of 74 independently run bioassays with soil incorporated metsulfuron-methyl from 12 different laboratories was analysed by a logistic dose-response curve to assess the precision of regression parameters and relate ED50 to soil properties. The potency in terms of ED50 of metsulfuron-methyl in Brassica rapa L., which was used by all laboratories, varied between 0.05 and 3.9 g a.i. ha-1. ED50 was negatively correlated with pH and positively correlated with organic matter. The majority of laboratories had ED50 within the interval 0.1-1.0 g a.i. ha-1. At one laboratory using three test species, the most sensitive species was Beta vulgaris L. followed by Brassica rapa L. and Lepidium sativum L. The coefficients of variation were smallest for the ED50 and ED90 response levels and largest for the ED10. The slope of the response curves had considerably lower coefficients of variation than the EDs. The results are discussed in relation to a previous collaborative bioassay study. Finally it is suggested that standardization of bioassays with herbicides could be achieved in the same way as standardization of chemical analyses.

Notes: A newly developed chemical assay was used to determine the degradation in soil of two sulfonylurea herbicides, primisulfuron-methyl and metsulfuron-methyl, under both controlled and field conditions. The results from the chemical assay were compared with those from traditional bio-assays for determination of persistence in the field. Phytotoxic effects of these herbicides were not observed after 6 weeks following application to an acidic (pH 5.7) soil with high organic matter content (7.3% o.c). Half-lives of 13 to 29 days were measured for primisulfuron-methyl at different soil-water contents and temperatures while those for metsulfuron-methyl ranged from 8 to 36 days. The rate of degradation of metsulfuron-methyl was more sensitive to temperature than that of primisulfuron-methyl. Persistence in the field was shorter than expected considering the results from the controlled environment studies. However, determination of the persistence by both chemical assay and bioassay methods produced very similar results.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 2-O-Ethyluracil und 2-O-Ethylthymin wurden mit 1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexamethyldisilazan silyliert und in Gegenwart vonTMS-triflat mit 2,3-Dideoxy-3-fluoro-D-erythro-pentofuranosid, 3-Azido-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-pentofuranosid und 2,3-Dideoxy-3-phthalimido-β-D-erythro-pentofuranosederivaten zu den entsprechenden 2-O-Ethyl-Nucleosiden umgesetzt.
Notes: Summary 2-O-Ethyluracil and 2-O-ethylthymine were silylated with 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane and condensed in the presence ofTMS triflate with 2,3-dideoxy-3-fluoro-D-erythro-pentofuranoside, 3-azido-2,3-dideoxy-D-erythro-pentofuranoside, and 2,3-dideoxy-3-phthalimido-β-D-erythro-pentofuranose derivatives to give the corresponding 2-O-ethyl nucleosides. Deprotection with saturated methanolic ammonia afforded the 2′,3′-dideoxy-3′-fluoro-2-O-ethyluridines, whereas 3′-azido-2′,3′-dideoxy-3-O-ethyluridine was obtained by deprotection with tetrabutylammonium fluoride in tetrahydrofuran. 3′-Amino-2′,3′-dideoxy-3-O-ethyluridine could be obtained only by treatment of the corresponding 3′-azido nucleoside with triphenylphosphine in pyridine. 3′-Deoxy-2-O-ethyl-3′-fluorothymidine (6b) showed moderate activity against HIV-1.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the effects of lisinopril on diastolic function in 12 normotensive patients (mean age 72 years) with symptomatic congestive heart failure, intact left ventricular systolic function and abnormal diastolic function secondary to ischaemic heart disease in a placebo-controlled double blind crossover study, with each treatment dosed orally for 5 continuous weeks. Compared to placebo, lisinopril significantly decreased blood pressure, increased plasma renin activity without altering heart rate or plasma norepinephrine. There was no statistically significant improvement with lisinopril in radionuclide derived peak filling rate and time to peak filling rate, in Doppler echocardiographic measurements of the ratio of peak flow velocity in early diastole to the peak flow velocity of atrial contraction (E:A ratio) and in visual analogue scales of symptoms. Thus, although angiotension converting enzyme inhibitors may have an established role in the treatment of heart failure secondary to left ventricular systolic dysfunction, its use in patients with isolated diastolic dysfunction remains unclear.

Notes: Abstract A nonsingular closed universe model with continuous creation of radiation or matter from the vacuum is introduced. Although primordial nucleosynthesis in this model follows the standard scenario it does not require the density of baryonic matter to be well below the critical density as in standard cosmology. The model predicts a present vacuum energy comparable with the matter energy. Its predictions for the classical low red-shift cosmological tests agree with the standard flat model results.
