    Notes: Measurements of the temperature dependent transport properties of epitaxial BaTiO3 are reported. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured over the temperature range of 77–300 K. Room temperature resistivities of the as-deposited, undoped films range from 105 to 108 Ω cm, while values as low as 55 Ω cm are obtained for the La-doped films. The resistivity shows an activated temperature dependence with the measured activation energies ranging between 0.11 and 0.50 eV. The activation energy depends strongly upon the thin film carrier concentration. Thermoelectric power measurements indicate that the films are n-type. The Seebeck coefficient for La-doped BaTiO3 exhibits metallike behavior, with its magnitude directly proportional to temperature. Temperature dependent resistivity and thermopower measurements indicate that the carrier mobility is activated. A transport model is proposed whereby conduction occurs in the La-doped films via hopping between localized states within a pseudogap formed between a lower Hubbard band and the BaTiO3 conduction band edge. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a versatile, pulsed source of cold (ΔE=0.018 eV), low-energy positrons (E(approximate)0–9 eV). Multiple pulses of 105 positrons, each 10 μs in duration, are extracted from a thermalized, room temperature positron plasma stored in a Penning trap. The frequency, duration, and amplitude of the pulses can be varied over a wide range. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present in this paper a low threshold, highly stable, integrated fiber laser cavity that uses an electronically tunable internal Bragg grating. The fiber laser produced over 5 mW with a spectral width of about 5 GHz at 1083 nm. The laser was used to achieve 30% polarization of the 2 3S1 metastable states of 4He in a weak rf discharge cell. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Traditional risk assessments, including those involving the United States Department of Energy (USDOE), are often criticized for producing useless or noncredible management responses because they did not meaningfully involve the public. The first step to involve the public is to identify appropriate active participants (stakeholders). This study was done to understand the processes used to identify stakeholders to serve on advisory boards established at the two largest remediation sites in the United States: the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The Hanford stakeholder identification process produced an interest-based board whereas the Savannah River Site strategy produced population-based representation. The basic goals of the stakeholder advisory groups were similar. However, different processes were used to identify the participants for the groups in part because of distinctly different social and cultural conditions in the areas affected by the operations of the two facilities, and in part because of the different level of trust of the USDOE and their contractors at Hanford compared with Savannah River. The discussion analyzes their different needs and potential for successful citizen participation.

    Notes: Abstract The morphometric parameters of the human gingival elastic fiber network were determined by image analysis and compared with human skin elastic fibers in relation to age. Similarly, collagen fibers were also investigated in both tissues. In this study, 47 healthy patients, 10 – 75 years old were studied for gingiva and another 50 patients in the same age range were included for skin biopsies. Three groups were compared: group 1 from the age of 10 – 24 years, group 2 from 25 to 49 years, and group 3 from 50 to 75 years. The diameters of the oxytalan fibers were invariable in both tissues, whatever the age considered. On the other hand, the diameters of elastic fibers increased regularly with age in the gingiva (P〈0.01) and in the skin (P〈0.01) between each age group. The area fraction occupied by the oxytalan fibers decreased significantly in both tissues (P〈0.01) for the skin and (P〈0.001) for the gingiva. The area fraction occupied by the gingival elastic fibers remained constant with age while the skin elastic fibers increased significantly with age between groups 2 and 1 (P〈0.01) and between groups 3 and 2 (P〈0.001). In the mid-dermis and in the mid-gingiva, the diameters of the collagen fibers increased strongly with age, between groups 2 and 1 (P〈0.01) and between groups 3 and 2 (P〈0.001). The area fraction occupied by the collagen bundles increased regularly with age in the mid-gingival (P〈0.05 between each age group), while a significant decrease was observed in the mid-dermis from the age of 50 – 75 years (P〈0.05). The results obtained contribute to a better understanding of some modifications which dermis and gingiva undergo with aging and provide data to perfect diagnosis and therapy in odontology and dermatology.

    Notes: This is the second publication of Clinical Development Plans from the National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, Chemoprevention Branch and Agent Development Committee. The Clinical Development Plans summarize the status of promising chemopreventive agents regarding evidence for safety and chemopreventive efficacy in preclinical and clinical studies. They also contain the strategy for further development of these drugs, addressing pharmacodynamics, drug effect measurements, intermediate biomarkers for monitoring efficacy, toxicity, supply and formulation, regulatory approval, and proposed clinical trials. Sixteen new Clinical Development Plans are presented here: curcumin, dehydroepiandrosterone, folic acid, genistein, indole-3-carbinol, perillyl alcohol, phenethyl isothiocyanate, 9-cis-retinoic acid, 13-cis-retinoic acid, l-selenomethionine and 1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)selenocyanate, sulindac sulfone, tea, ursodiol, vitamin A, and (+)-vorozole. The objective of publishing these plans is to stimulate interest and thinking among the scientific community on the prospects for developing these and future generations of chemopreventive drugs. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
