    Notes: We describe the design and performance of a compact ultrahigh vacuum sample holder, which allows (1) sample transfer, (2) liquid-nitrogen cooling, (3) heating by electron bombardment, and (4) temperature measurement in direct proximity to the sample. The device operates from close to liquid-nitrogen temperatures up to temperatures of 800–900 K in the steady-state regime with peak temperatures in excess of 1700 K and allows easy and reliable sample transfer. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present experimental and modeling results for the subgap absorption coefficient of intrinsic and doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) in order to explore the limitations of the constant photocurrent method (CPM). To properly model the subgap absorption coefficient, we have developed a simulation computer program including all the possible optical and thermal transitions between gap and extended states. Tail states are assumed to be either donor- or acceptorlike and midgap states are assumed to be amphoteric. The defect-pool model is also incorporated in our analysis. We have fitted several experimental dc-CPM spectra by using a standard set of parameters for the density of states. Our analysis demonstrates that in undoped samples the true absorption coefficient and the density of midgap states are underestimated by the CPM measurement. This is due to a nonconstant electron lifetime in the energy range between 0.8 and 1.2 eV. On the other hand, we show that in n-doped or p-doped samples, the CPM provides the correct answer. The energy range for the Fermi level where the CPM fails in a-Si:H is clearly established. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of noninteracting single-domain particles whose anisotropy is made up of a cubic magnetocrystalline and a uniaxial components were investigated. Various directions of the uniaxial anisotropy were considered and the dependencies of the reduced remanence as a function of the ratio between the two anisotropies were obtained. It was found that for sufficiently strong uniaxial anisotropy and random arrangement of the particle orientations, reduced remanence lower than 0.5 is, in general, an intrinsic property of the system due to the negative remanent magnetization of some of the particles. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present experimental magnetoresistance, magnetization, and remanence data for CoCu granular films obtained by electron beam codeposition, subsequently submitted to a thermal treatment. The magnetization measurements show coexistence of superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic (or blocked superparamagnetic) Co grains. By modeling the experimental magnetization curves, the distribution function of the superparamagnetic particle size, the volume fraction of the blocked part of the Co particles, and their saturation magnetization are obtained. δM plots are constructed using the remanence curves. A correlation between the changes of the δM parameters and those of the giant magnetoresistance, caused by the annealing, is discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We measured the effects of light soaking on the extended state electron mobility in intrinsic and n-type doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon samples. We obtained the temperature dependence of the mobility in the range 0–80 °C, using a recently proposed method [Dawson et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 63, 955 (1993)]. We found a decrease of the mobility as the degree of light-induced degradation increased. We suggest that these changes in the extended state transport are caused by an enhancement in the magnitude of the potential fluctuations introduced by the extra created charged defects. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a technique to quantitatively image the magnetic field above a magnetic specimen using a modified magnetic force microscope (MFM). The technique depends on the nonlinear response of a magnetically soft MFM tip to the sample field and to an externally applied field, similar in principle to fluxgate magnetometry. We demonstrate the technique with high resolution, quantitative images of the magnetic field above a sample of longitudinal recording media. The magnetic field resolution is on the order of 1 Oe, with sub-100 nm spatial resolution comparable to standard MFM techniques. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Weak satellites in S1←S0 excitation spectra of natural-abundance pentacene in p-terphenyl due to position-specific 13C isotope shifts were observed. An assignment of these satellites to the various carbon positions is derived. The extremely narrow inhomogeneous linewidth allowed selective excitation of pentacene molecules with 13C in specific positions. Spectra of the magnetic-resonance transition between triplet sublevels of such ensembles, and of individual pentacene molecules showed position-specific 13C hyperfine broadening. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of self-assembled stearic acid films adsorbed on an Al2O3-film. Doping the film with spin labels at different positions of the alkyl chain in order to make the films accessible for EPR spectroscopy provides an opportunity to investigate the rotational motion of the molecule along the alkyl chain. The temperature dependent EPR spectra show a strong dependence of the rotational motion of the molecules with variation of the location of the spin label along the chain. We study the rotational motion by means of the EPR line shape analysis. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A variety of natural and artificial substrates were tested for their suitability as oviposition sites for the predatory anthocorid bug Orius insidiosus. The bugs oviposited into models of beans constructed from Parafilm, but none of the eggs laid into these models hatched. In choice tests, beans stems were preferred to both bean pods and potato sprouts. Hatching rates at 100% r.h. were highest (59%) for bean pods and significantly lower for both potato sprouts (39%) and bean stems (29%). At 60% r.h., hatching rates for bean pods (39%), bean stems (34%) and potato sprouts (33%) were similar. At 30% r.h. hatching rates for all three substrates were less than 15%. The results suggest that bean stems can be used successfully as an alternative to bean pods for the mass rearing of these biological control agents.

    Notes: Abstract Selected nutritional and developmental factors regulating the predatory behavior of first-instar spined assassin bugsSinea diadema (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were investigated. The longevity of unfed nymphs provided with free water, bean pod sections, or glucose solutions was not significantly greater than that of unfed nymphs which were not provided with a source of water. First-instarS. diadema that were provided with larvae ofEphestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as prey began feeding 1.9 (±0.9) days after hatching. In contrast, first-instarS. diadema that were provided with conspecifics of the same age did not begin feeding until they were 3.9 (±0.9) days old. These results suggest that the potential nutritional benefits to be gained from feeding equal or outweigh the risk of attacking prey capable of effective self-defense only when nymphs have not fed for 4 days after hatching. Providing the nymphs with water or glucose solutions significantly delayed the onset of conspecific predation. Additional data are presented which demonstrate that first-instarS. diadema are not restrained from preying on siblings by kin recognition.
