Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study was to estimate the proportion of pregnancies with pregestational diabetes in Germany, to compare the outcome of these pregnancies to pregnancies in nondiabetic mothers and to identify risk factors for poor pregnancy outcomes in mothers with pregestational diabetes. Data of the “Perinatalerhebung Nordrhine” from 1988–1993 were analysed. The Perinatalerhebung is an ongoing quality assurance programme of prenatal and perinatal care in the region of North Rhine (South Western part of North Rhine-Westphalia). During the observation period a proportion of 93%–100% of the annual births in the region (n = ∼100000) were included in the study. Their data had been documented by the obstetricians in a standard multiple choice questionnaire. The outcome parameters perinatal mortality, macrosomia, prematurity, and malformations were analysed in relation to several defined explanatory variables. There were 2,402 births in mothers with pregestational diabetes (0.4% of all births). The proportions of poor pregnancy outcomes in women with pregestational diabetes were 2.8% for perinatal mortality, 27.6% for macrosomia, 21.1% for prematurity and 2.1% for malformations . The respective relative risks compared to the non diabetic mothers were 4.3 (95% CI 3.4–5.5) for perinatal mortality, 3.1 (95% CI 2.9–3.3) for macrosomia, 2.7 (95% CI 2.5–2.9) for prematurity and 1.7 (95% CI 1.3–2.3) for malformations . The main risk factor for perinatal mortality in children of diabetic mothers after adjustment for maternal smoking, ethnicity, parents' professional achievement, type of obstetric hospital, and maternal age was substandard use of prenatal care. Conclusions The prevalence of births from mothers with pregestational diabetes and their pregnancy outcomes were similar to those in other Western countries. The standard for non-diabetic mothers has not been reached yet. Further improvements may be achieved if all diabetic women are convinced to use the standard prenatal care facilities throughout pregnancy.

Notes: Magnetization and remanent magnetization curves for noninteracting single-domain particles with cubic magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been calculated, taking into account the first two anisotropy constants. The dependencies of the saturation remanence, coercivity, remanence coercivity, and δM plots on the anisotropy constants ratio have been discussed. It has been found that the calculated saturation remanence shows maxima in the vicinity of the spin-reorientation transition points for both negative and positive first cubic anisotropy constants. The remanent magnetization for the case when the face diagonals 〈110〉 are the easiest magnetization orientations has been analytically determined as well. It has been shown that when more than one type of easiest directions coexist, the remanence of the system can only be obtained numerically because of the history dependence of the remanent magnetization for some particles' configurations. The predicted remanence behavior for systems representing spin-reorientation has been compared with that of a Tb0.6Ho0.4Fe2 powder sample, and an excellent agreement between numerical and experimental data has been found. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The magnetization behavior of Co/Pd multilayers has been analyzed as a function of the degree of interfacial mixing among the Co and Pd layers. Controlled atomic mixing was induced by low-dose and low-flux ion implantation and a follow-up of the structural status of the samples was made by simulation of the high-angle x-ray-diffraction data. Values of the saturation magnetization as a function of the broadness of Co concentration profile are presented and explained by a simple model based on the parameters obtained from the x-ray simulations.

Notes: In this article, the power spectra of the Barkhausen noise of Ni1−xMnx is presented. The measurements were made in the ferromagnetic phase at several temperatures and manganese concentrations in order to map the effects of the degree of disorder and of the temperature on domain wall dynamics. Measurements in standard ferromagnetic materials were also made to compare the dynamics in both cases.

Notes: The magnetic properties of noninteracting single-domain particles whose anisotropy is made up of a cubic magnetocrystalline and a uniaxial components were investigated. Various directions of the uniaxial anisotropy were considered and the dependencies of the reduced remanence as a function of the ratio between the two anisotropies were obtained. It was found that for sufficiently strong uniaxial anisotropy and random arrangement of the particle orientations, reduced remanence lower than 0.5 is, in general, an intrinsic property of the system due to the negative remanent magnetization of some of the particles. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present experimental magnetoresistance, magnetization, and remanence data for CoCu granular films obtained by electron beam codeposition, subsequently submitted to a thermal treatment. The magnetization measurements show coexistence of superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic (or blocked superparamagnetic) Co grains. By modeling the experimental magnetization curves, the distribution function of the superparamagnetic particle size, the volume fraction of the blocked part of the Co particles, and their saturation magnetization are obtained. δM plots are constructed using the remanence curves. A correlation between the changes of the δM parameters and those of the giant magnetoresistance, caused by the annealing, is discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The contrasting effects of ion implantation and thermal annealing on structural and magnetic properties of Co/Pd multilayers have been studied. Ion implantation causes local damage to the multilayers, resulting in enhanced magnetization due to the polarization of the neighboring Pd. Thermal annealing generates massive interdiffusion across the interfaces into the formation of Co-Pd alloys with a lower magnetization. Effects on coercivity and remanence have also been studied.

Notes: Magnetization and remanent magnetization curves for noninteracting single-domain particles whose anisotropy is made up of a cubic magnetocrystalline and an uniaxial components were investigated. For a given cubic anisotropy, the saturation remanence, coercivity, remanence coercivity, and coercivity factor values have been obtained for several different uniaxial anisotropy directions. The corresponding δM plots have been constructed for initially thermal or ac demagnetized systems, and a great variety of their shapes has been obtained when the uniaxial anisotropy does not dominate. Coercivity factor values rather higher than those for pure uniaxial or cubic anisotropy particles have been obtained as well, even for already dominating uniaxial anisotropy for some uniaxial anisotropy directions. Thus, it has been shown that one may not safely draw conclusions about interactions from deviations from the zero line in the δM plots or coercivity factor values for particles with competing anisotropies without specific analysis for any particular case. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The ferromagnetic anisotropy of resistivity Δρ/ρ0=(ρ(parallel)−ρ⊥)/ρ0 depends strongly on the nature of the dominant electron scattering centers, and is usually larger for impurity scattering than for phonon scattering. This explains why Δρ/ρ0 decreases with increasing temperature T in crystalline transition-metal alloys. Parker has proposed an expression for Δρ/ρ0 as a function of T, based on Matthiessen's rule. It contains the parameters (Δρ/ρ0)im and (Δρ/ρ0)ph, representing the Δρ/ρ0 values for impurity scattering and phonon scattering, respectively. In an alloy series with weak electron scattering, such as Fe-Co, (Δρ/ρ0)ph is found experimentally to be positive and equal to a fixed fraction (approximately-equal-to) (1)/(4) of (Δρ/ρ0)im. On the other hand, in crystalline alloy series with strong, resonant electron scattering, such as Ni-Fe, Fe-Cr, Fe-V, (Δρ/ρ0)ph is found to be negative and has a minimum at the composition where (Δρ/ρ0)im is maximum.
