Notes: Diamond like carbon (DLC) films were prepared on Si wafer, using laser induced arc deposition (Laser arc) technique. Results of Raman Spectra analysis showed that the as-deposit films were amorphous, having obvious sp3 structure. Meanwhile, surface topography and micro-tribological properties were investigated by using Atomic Force Microscope and Nano-Scratch Tester. Influences of arc voltage, substrate bias voltage, target materials and substrate pre-treatment methods upon the film structures and film properties were studied

Notes: A stainless-steel chamber has been constructed and interfaced to a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer for the purpose of studying laboratory simulated atmospheric aerosols and clouds. The chamber is cylindrical in design and is comprised of a double-walled inner assembly that resides within an outer vacuum jacket. The volume of the aerosol sample region is 28 L. By circulating refrigerated methanol between the double walls of the inner assembly, constant temperature control of the sample region can be maintained between 187 and 300 K. A study of temperature uniformity within the chamber at 291, 240, and 187 K revealed a standard deviation in temperature of 1.6 K as determined from measurements made using five copper–constantan thermocouples. Good agreement is obtained between thermocouple measured temperatures and rotational temperatures computed from infrared absorption spectra of methane gas. The chamber described here has been used to examine heterogeneous chemistry of solid powder samples. A technique of generating an aerosol sample by rapidly dispersing a solid powder in a gas is presented. The half-life of a γ-alumina aerosol sample was measured to be 25 min. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To improve the saturation magnetization (Ms) of cobalt ferrite thin films, metal/cobalt ferrite composite thin films were prepared by controlling the sputtering conditions such as oxygen concentration in sputtering gas, substrate temperature, composition of the thin films. With decreasing the oxygen ratio from 50% to 5% in sputtering gas and increasing the substrate temperature from room temperature to 400 °C, the Ms of the thin films was increased and the coercivity (Hc) decreased. The result was attributed to deposition of the metal/cobalt ferrite thin films. With increasing the metal ratio in the thin films, preferred orientation of (111) of cobalt ferrite was worsened in the thin films. The metal deposited in the thin films was identified as cobalt with (002) preferred orientation. In higher cobalt content than the stoichiometric composition of CoFe2O4, the thin films with high Ms and Hc could be deposited in the wide substrate temperature range of 200–400 °C. We can prepare the metal/cobalt ferrite composite thin films with Ms about 580 emu/cm3 and Hc 1700 Oe by controlled the sputtering conditions. The thin films are thought to be applicable to the magnetic recording media with high recording density. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed visible electroluminescence (EL) from silicon nanocrystallites which are embedded in a-Si:H films prepared in a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. The EL spectra are in the range of 500–850 nm with two peaks located at about 630–680 and 730 nm, respectively. We found that the intensity of EL peaks is related closely to the conductivity of the deposited films. The carrier conduction path is discussed in terms of the material structural characteristics, and a tentative explanation of the light emission mechanism is proposed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the successful fabrication of flexible single crystal semiconductor structures. A highly selective etching solution allowed us to obtain large area foils and membranes of good structural integrity, using films of indium and silicone as flexible substrates. Photoluminescence and transmission measurements verified that the optical properties of these structures were preserved. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Acid invertases play a key role in sugar metabolism, and the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) enhances sugar accumulation in crop sink organs, but information about the relationship between ABA and acid invertases has been limited. The present experiments were done with both in vivo pre-incubation of the grape (Vitis vinifera × V. labrusca L.) berry tissues in ABA-containing medium and in vivo infiltration of ABA into the intact berries. The results show that ABA activates both the soluble and cell wall-bound acid invertases during fruit development by enhancing their activities and amounts as assessed by immunoblotting or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. This activation was pH, time course and ABA dose dependent. The serine/threonine protein kinase inhibitors K252a, staurosporine and H7 and acid phosphatase increased the activation of ABA-induced acid invertase, but the tyrosine protein kinase inhibitor quercetin strongly suppressed the ABA-induced effects, suggesting that a complex reversible protein phosphorylation is involved in the ABA-induced activation of acid invertases. The effects of the protein kinase inhibitors were dependent on the in vivo state of the tissues but independent of the expression of acid invertases. Two ABA analogues, (–)-ABA and trans-ABA, had no effect on acid invertases, showing that the ABA-induced activation of acid invertases is specific to the physiologically active form of ABA. These data suggest that ABA may be involved in fruit development by activating acid invertases.

Notes: This study examined the effects of dietary vitamin C and ammonia concentration on the cellular defense response of Macrobrachium nipponese. The response of the cellular defense was determined by monitoring changes in reactive oxygen intermediates in hemocytes, superoxide dismutase activity, catalase activity, glutathione peroxidase activity, glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase activity in muscle. The results showed that prawns fed the basal diet had a significant increase in reactive oxygen intermediates in response to exposure to ammonia-N. When dietary vitamin C was added to the feed, there was a significant decrease in reactive oxygen intermediates in response to exposure to ammonia-N. Total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity of prawns fed the basal diet decreased as ammonia-N increased. This decrease in activity was significantly less pronounced in prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement. In prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement there was no significant variation in catalase reductase or gluxathione reductase activity in response to variations in ammonia-N concentration. The glutathione transference activity increased at a low concentration of ammonia-N in prawns that were fed the dietary vitamin C supplement, but there was no significant variation in the prawns fed the basal diet. Overall the results indicate that dietary vitamin C supplements enhance the capacity of M. nipponese to respond to elevations in ammonia-N. This response involved several biochemical reactions known to be involved in cellular defense.

Notes: Background/aims: Facial sebum secretions are known to change under various circumstances. Facial skin types have been categorized as oily, normal, dry, and combination types. However, these have been evaluated subjectively by individuals to date, and no objective accepted standard measurement method exists. The combination skin type is most common, but its definition is vaguer than the definitions of the other skin types. Methods: We measured facial sebum secretions with Sebumeter®. Sebum secretions were measured at five sites of the face seasonally for a year, in the same volunteers. Using the data obtained we developed a set of rules to define the combination skin type. Results: Regional differences in sebum secretion were confirmed. Sebum secretions on forehead, nose, and chin were higher than on both cheeks. Summer was found to be the highest sebum-secreting season, and seasonal variations were found in the T- and U-zones. A mismatch of skin type in the T- and U-zones in more than two seasons appears to be close to subjective ratings of what is described as the ‘combination’ skin type. Conclusion: We showed that the face shows definitive regional and seasonal variations in sebum secretion. To define the combination skin type, seasonal variations in sebum secretion should be considered in addition to regional variations.

Notes: Purpose - Cyber-brands are regularly valued but, to date, there has been no reported research designed to understand the derivation of cyber brands' equity, so that attempts can be made to increase their brands' equity efficiently. This research aims to address the issue. Design/methodology/approach - To measure the strength of cyber brands, prior off-line research is replicated, taking a customer focus to identify determinate variables. These customer-focused variables are tested against cyber consumers' stated satisfaction and site-visit intention behavior, using regression analysis. Findings - The results satisfactorily justify the suggested model, which has a predictive power ranging from 62 to 72 per cent. Practical implications - The study shows that practitioners intent on raising the power of their cyber brand can be guided by the same model as used off-line. Originality/value - The major theoretical contribution of the study is to show that there is little difference between measuring and increasing brand power on or off-line.
