Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For Tb-Fe-Co(MO)/Al bilayered films, dependence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant Ku⊥ on MO layer thickness tMO of 3–300 nm and Al layer thickness tAl of 5 and 100 nm has been investigated. For either tAl, easy magnetization direction was normal to film plane at tMO above 4 nm. Ku⊥ of films with tAl of 5 nm increased drastically with increasing tMO for tMO〈10 nm and then assumed a constant value of 4×106 erg/cm3 which is two times larger than that with tAl of 100 nm. This difference in Ku⊥ between them may be attributed to stress induced anisotropy. Estimation of rotational hysteresis loss Wr and its integral R suggests that the mechanism of magnetization reversal may be attributed to incoherent curling mode. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Objective. Benign fibrous histiocytoma is a tumor with histologic features similar to those of xanthofibromas, which include fibrous cortical defects and nonossifying fibromas, but with different clinical features. This study investigated the findings of benign fibrous histiocytoma on various imaging modalities. It emphasized the importance of clinical and imaging features as well as histologic findings in establishing the diagnosis. Design. We reviewed three cases of benign fibrous histiocytoma of the femur that had been diagnosed histologically as (fibro)xanthoma during a retrospective analysis of 187 primary benign and malignant bone lesions. Patients. All the patients were middle-aged women with various knee complaints. Results and conclusions. Radiologically, the lesions were all lytic with well-defined geographic margins and sclerotic rims. The tumors arose within the medullary cavity in the distal metaphysis of the femur and involved the epiphysis. CT showed lytic destruction with well-defined marginal sclerosis. T1-weighted MR images showed that the lesions had predominantly the same signal intensity as that of skeletal muscle. The lesions were hypovascular on angiography. Bone scintigraphy showed moderately increased uptake. It was concluded that multiple images as well as clinical features can be useful in differentiating benign fibrous histiocytoma from fibroxanthoma, giant cell tumor, and other fibrohistiocytic tumors of bone.

Notes: Abstract A dynamical system with two stable equilibrium points will show a flip-flop motion between the neighborhoods of the two points when it is perturbed by small random noises. A typical example is the stochastic disk dynamo model where the two equilibrium points correspond to the two polarities of the earth's magnetic field. We prove what has been suggested by a computer simulation, that the counting process of the flips or the reversals of the earth's field converges to a standard Poisson process if the time is suitably scaled.

Notes: Summary The cDNA encoding the VP6 gene of avian rotavirus PO-13 strain was inserted into the bacterial expression vector pET-3a. Upon isopropyl-l-thio-β-D-galactoside induction, theE. coli BL21 (DE3) harboring the vector containing cDNA of the VP6 gene produced an approximately 45-kDa polypeptide, which reacted with rabbit serum against PO-13 strain in Western blotting. To study the antigenic sites on VP6, various deletion mutants were constructed, expressed inE. coli and the reactivity with antigenic site I- and II-specific MAbs analyzed by Western blotting. Site I, which is shared with all group A mammalian and avian rotaviruses except for chicken rotavirus, was found to be located at amino acid positions 45 to 65, and site II, which probably contributes to an authentic group A antigen common to both mammalian and avian rotaviruses, at amino acid positions 134 to 142.

Notes: Abstract Expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-2 (PAI-2) was evaluated in 125 surgically resected gastric cancers by immunohistochemical analysis. Tissue was stained immunohistochemically with a monoclonal antibody against human uPA and monoclonal antibodies against human PAI-1 and PAI-2. In addition, DNA ploidy patterns were determined by cytofluorometer after staining with propidium iodide. We found that 82 (66%) of the 125 gastric cancers expressed uPA as diffuse cytoplasmic staining, as intensely outlined luminal borders. PAI-1 expression was observed in 62 (50%) of 125 gastric cancer as a fine, diffuse and granular pattern in the cytoplasm. PAI-2 expression was observed in 65 (52%) of the 125 gastric cancers as a diffuse cytoplasmic staining. uPA-positive tumours showed a higher incidence of infiltration, lymph node metastasis and peritoneal dissemination than uPA-negative ones. Patients with uPA-positive tumours proved to have a significantly poorer prognosis than those with negative ones. PAI-1-negative tumours showed a higher incidence of liver metastasis and carried a poorer prognosis than PAI-1-positive ones. There was no significant correlation between uPA or PAI-1 expression and DNA ploidy patterns. Conversely, there was no significant relationship between PAI-2 expression and clinicopathological parameters and prognosis. According to the expression of uPA and PAI-1 status, groups of 19 uPA(−)/PAI-1(−), 44 uPA(+)/PAI-1(−), 23 uPA(−)/PAI-1(+) and 39 uPA(+)/PAI-1(+) were subdivided. Tumours with UPA(+)/PAI-1(−) had a significantly higher incidence of liver metastasis, lymph node metastasis and serosal invasion than the other groups of tumours. Patients with uPA(+)/PAI-1(−) tumours had a significantly poorer prognosis than those with uPA(−)/PAI-1(+) tumours. These results indicate that uPA expression is a useful biological prognostic indicator, and that uPA and PAI-1 may play an important part in the tumour progression and metastasis in gastric cancer.

Notes: Abstract We examined the existence and distribution of apoptotic cells in human gastric mucosa, chronic gastritis, adenomatous dysplasias and carcinomas in 15 surgically removed stomachs in which dysplasia and carcinoma were found simultaneously. Serial sections were cut for immunohistochemistry for p53 oncoprotein and Ki-67 antigen, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labelling (TUNEL). TUNEL signal-positive apoptotic cells were rare in normal mucosa, while a few apoptotic cells were noted in gastritic mucosa and intestinal metaplasia, intermingled with Ki-67 antigen-positive cells forming a generative cell zone. This suggests the cell-cycle-dependent apoptosis of gastric mucosa. The frequency of apoptotic cells per crypt was higher in incomplete than in complete metaplasia, implying greater underlying DNA damage in the former. TUNEL indices (TI; percentage of TUNEL-positive cells in tumour cells) were slightly higher in adenomatous dysplasias (4.9±2.1) than in carcinoma (3.9±1.1), but there was no no statistical difference. Ki-67 indices (KI; percentage of Ki-67 antigen-positive cells in tumour cells) were significantly (P〈0.05) higher in carcinomas than in dysplasias. Thus, gastric adenomatous dysplasias were characterized by relatively higher TI and lower KI, which might reflect a more static growth potential. The expression of p53 oncoprotein in cancer cells is thought to be an apoptosis-suppressing event, although its precise role remains to be elucidated. Overall, these results indicate that apoptosis plays a crucial part in the morphogenesis of gastritic mucosa including intestinal metaplasia, and that the process is correlated both with tumourigenesis and with proliferative activity.
