Notes: Potassium lithium tantalate niobate, K3Li2(TaxNb1−x)5O15, or KLTN single crystals were grown by spontaneous crystallization method, and it has been demonstrated that the KLTN crystal has high potential as a nonlinear crystal for blue second-harmonic-generation (SHG) applications. Ta substitution for Nb site in K3Li2Nb5O15 crystal improves the transparency in the blue light region and decolorizes the material. Compared with K3Li2Nb5O15, the K3Li2Ta5O15 crystal exhibits a 60 nm blueshift of the absorption edge from 376 to 316 nm, and decreases its absorption coefficient from 2.3 to 0.3 cm−1 at 400 nm. The phase-matched frequency doubling of the Ti:sapphire infrared laser for blue SHG at room temperature has been demonstrated with the KLTN bulk crystal. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background There are no reports of respiratory epithelial damage induced by immuiioglobulin-stimulated eosinophils. Objective We tried to induce damage to respiratory epithelium by guinea-pig (GP) eosinophils stimulated with guinea-pig IgG (GP-lgG)-coated Sepharose 4B beads. Methods GP tracheal epithelium was cultured together with GP eosinophils that had been collected from the peritoneal cavity, purified on a Percoll gradient, and stimulated with GP-lgG-coated beads (GP eosinophils:beads = 20:1). Damage to the epithelium was observed with an inverted microscope. Results After 24 h of culture with three 106 eosinophils. irregularity of the surface of the epithelium, desquamation. shedding of cilia, and abnormal beating of cilia were observed. This damage was first observed after 12 h of incubation, and was more severe at 24 h. No damage was found when beads coated with human serum albumin (HSA) were used. GP eosinophils stimulated with GP-IgG released significantly more EPO than those stimulated with HSA. at 6 and 24 h. Heparin and eatalase partially inhibited the epithelial damage. O2-production by eosinophils was also enhanced with GP-IgG-coated beads. Conclusion Both granule basic proteins and reactive oxygen radicals may be responsible for epithelial damage, probably via an EPO + H2O2+ halide system. These results confirmed that stimulated eosinophils can damage respiratory epithelium.

Notes: Background We have shown that interleukin-5 (IL-5) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are present in sputum from patients experiencing acute asthma attacks, by eosinophil survival assay. The viability of guinea-pig eosinophils was significantly increased in the presence of such sputum extracts after 3 days' culture, and it was inhibited by the addition of anti-IL-5 and anti-GM-CSF antibodies. However, the contribution of IL-5 to the increase in eosinophil viabihty was less than expected from the values of IL-5 measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Therefore, we speculated that something in sputum inhibited the function of IL-5.Objective Tratnsforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) was the only cytokine we tested that inhibited the prolongation of survival of guinea-pig eosinophils induced by IL-5. The objective of this study is to detect TGF-β in the same sputum. Methods Guinea-pig eosinophils were cultured with or without anti-TGF-β antibody in the presence of sputum extracts, and the eosinophil viability was counted after 3 days. Measurement of TGF-βl in sputum was performed by ELISA. Results Eosinophil viabilities with and without anti-TGF-β antibody were 79.7 ± 2.9% and 69.0 ± 2.7%, respectively, and the difference between them was statistically significant (P 〈 0.05, n = 9). The concentration of TGF-β1 in the sputum was 21.7 ± 3.3 ng/mL (n = 9).Conclusion These observations suggest that TGF-β is present in sputum from patients with bronchial asthma.

Notes: Abstract. We reviewed the clinical and radiological features in eight patients with spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma (RSH). The diagnosis was confirmed at surgery in four patients, and spontaneous resolution occurred in the other four. All patients were elderly adults. Acute abdominal pain and a palpable mass after muscular strain, such as coughing or twisting, were features highly suggestive of RSH. Sonographically, these hematomas may be confused with abdominal wall tumors. On CT scans, a hyperdense mass posterior to the rectus abdominis muscle with ipsilateral anterolateral muscular enlargement is considered characteristic of acute RSH, although chronic RSH may be isodense or hypodense relative to the surrounding muscle. MRI is very useful in the diagnosis of RSH, which is demonstrated as a high signal intensity area on both T1- and T2-weighted images, especially when the CT findings are not specific for RSH.

Notes: Abstract. We describe a patient with Behçet's disease who developed multiple aneurysms and retroperitoneal hemorrhage due to rupture of a renal artery aneurysm. Despite successful transcatheter arterial embolization, the patient died due to pneumonia. Our retrospective review of the case revealed that the CT scan obtained 3 months before the rupture had demonstrated dilatation of bilateral renal arteries.

Notes: Abstract. We studied the value of short-TI inversion-recovery (STIR) imaging for the localization of pancreatic insulinoma. Four patients (three women and one man aged 35–65 years) with surgically proven insulinoma were included in this study. All patients were examined by MR imaging with spin echo (SE) and STIR sequences. The STIR images were compared with the histopathologic findings in each case. In two patients, the tumors were markedly hyperintense on STIR images, and a 5-mm insulinoma was depicted only by this imaging method in one of the two. In the other two patients, 10-mm insulinomas were only slightly hyperintense on STIR images. The latter tumors had a higher content of collagen fibers than the former, indicating that the amount of collagen influences the signal intensity of insulinoma. Despite some limitations, STIR imaging is a useful noninvasive method for the localization of pancreatic insulinoma.

Notes: Abstract We report the case of a patient with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) who developed renal cell carcinoma (RCC). At birth, this patient presented with macroglossia, diastasis recti, mild gigantism, hepatomegaly and hypoglycemia, and the diagnosis of BWS was made. At 22 months, an intrapelvic rhabdomyosarcoma was detected and resected. At 37 months, computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a small mass with high attenuation in the right kidney, which was surgically confirmed to be RCC.
