Notes: Previous histologic studies of tongue lesions in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in non-irradiated (Brown Norway×Lewis) F1 rats given parental spleen cells have demonstrated an increase in the number of MHC class II+ cells with dendritic shape in the lamina propria to be the earliest event in the development of the lesion. We studied this histologic finding by electron microscopy lo increase understanding of the early cellular events occurring in the lesion. Electron microscopically, the most prominent cell type observed in the lamina propria was the ceil with a dendritic shape. These dendritic cells possessed large nuclei that often showed irregular indentations and ample cytoplasm containing numerous filaments and mitochondria. A few lysosomal or phagocytic structures were also seen in the cytoplasm. No Birbeck granules were identified. These findings were very similar to those of indeterminate cells in the epidermis and dermis. Our data strongly support the hypothesis that MHC class IP cells with dendritic shape present antigen during the induction of local immunological responses in the tongue of GVHD rats.

Notes: Abstract  We have developed mouse monoclonal antibodies (AHA-1–5, all IgG1 sub-isotype mAbs) against histamine (HA) conjugated to bovine serum albumin using glutaraldehyde-NaBH4. Among these, AHA-1 mAb was found to be the most useful for HA immunocytochemistry (ICC) in terms of specificity and sensitivity without non-specific immunobinding. AHA-1 was demonstrated to be specific to HA with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) binding test, simulating the ICC of tissue sections, and not reactive to any of the other amino acids and peptides with N-terminal histidine tested. By use of this antibody, indirect immunoperoxidase staining was observed in rat stomach fixed with glutaraldehyde (GA) in combination with NaBH4 reduction. In contrast, no immunoreactivity was seen in tissue fixed only with GA. Absorption controls indicated that the immunostaining could be completely inhibited by GA-conjugated HA, which was consistent with the results of an ELISA inhibition test. No cross-reactivity occurred with other GA-conjugated amino acids. ICC staining was dense in the cytoplasm of gastric enterochromaffin-like cells and very weak in mast cells. A new finding was that staining was noticed in some cell bands of the intermediate layer between the stratum lucidum and the stratum corneum of the stratified squamous epithelium of the gastric cardia, esophagus, tongue, and skin in rats. The results strongly suggest that the monoclonal antibody allowed highly specific detection of HA in animal tis- sues.

Notes: Abstract. A levoatrial cardinal vein is a rare congenital anomaly of the systemic veins. It is frequently associated with left-side obstructive anomalies. We report a case of tetralogy of Fallot with a levoatrial cardinal vein. The innominate vein was absent and two left upper pulmonary veins connected to this vein. There were no left-side obstructive anomalies.

Notes: Abstract Two patients who developed cervical myelopathy secondary to rheumatoid arthritis were analyzed post mortem. One patient had anterior atlanto-axial subluxation (AAS) combined with subaxial subluxation (SS), and the other had vertical subluxation (VS) combined with SS. In the patient with AAS, the posterior aspect of the spinal cord demonstrated severe constriction at the C2 segment, which arose from dynamic osseous compression by the C1 posterior arch. A histological cross-section of the spinal cord at the segment was characterized by distinct necrosis in the posterior white columns and the gray matter. In the patient with VS, the upper cervical cord and medulla oblongata showed angulation over the invaginated odontoid process, whereas no significant pathological changes were observed. At the level of SS, the spinal cord was pinched and compressed between the upper corner of the vertebral body and the lower edge of the lamina. Histologically, demyelination and gliosis were observed in the posterior and lateral white columns.

Notes: Abstract The alumina-titania catalysts were prepared from various alumina and titania sources by sol-gel method, which were metal alkoxide and metal alkoxide modified with organic groups. Specific surface area, pore size distribution, solid acidity and catalytic activity of NO reduction for the alumina-titania catalysts depended on the alumina and titania sources. The alumina-titania catalyst prepared from metal alkoxide for alumina source and metal alkoxide modified with organic groups for titania source exhibited higher activity of NO reduction than the other alumina-titania catalysts. Catalytic activity of NO reduction for the alumina-titania catalysts depended on specific surface area and solid acidity. It was suggested that solid acidity of the alumina-titania catalysts depended on the coordination structure of Al atoms and the homogeneity of alumina and titania components.

Notes: Abstract An 18-coefficient modified Benedict–Webb–Rubin equation of state has been developed for R-404A, a ternary mixture of 44% by mass of pentafluoroethane (R-125), 52% by mass of 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (R-143a), and 4% by mass of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a). Correlations of bubble point pressures, dew point pressures, saturated liquid densities, and saturated vapor densities are also presented. This equation of state has been developed based on the reported experimental data of PVT properties, saturation properties, and isochoric heat capacities by using least-squares fitting. These correlations are valid in the temperature range from 250 K to the critical temperature. This equation of state is valid at pressures up to 19 MPa, densities to 1300 kg·m−3, and temperatures from 250 to 400 K. The thermodynamic properties except for the saturation pressures are calculated from this equation of state.
