    Notes: Quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators and Hamiltonians for particles in external magnetic fields are related to representations of nilpotent groups. Using this connection the eigenfunctions of the quartic anharmonic oscillator with potential Vα(x)=(α+(x2/2))2 can be used to determine the eigenfunctions of a charged particle in a nonconstant magnetic field, of the form Bz=β2+β3x. The quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenvalues for low-lying states are obtained numerically and a function which interpolates between α(very-much-less-than)0 (a double harmonic oscillator) and α(very-much-greater-than)0 (a harmonic oscillator) is shown to give a good fit to the numerical data. Approximate expressions for the quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenfunctions are then used to get the eigenfunctions for the magnetic field Hamiltonian. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this paper we are concerned with the wave generation by a singular forcelet in a viscous fluid of finite depth, where the singularity is located far from the bottom and not very near the free surface. In the first part of this work, the image system of an Oseenlet bounded by a no-slip wall, is considered. It is found that the resultant velocity field can be described by a planar distribution of vertical Oseen doublets and a negative Oseenlet located at the mirror point of the singularity with respect to the plane wall. In the second part of the work we deal with the generation of waves by these solutions. By imposing the linearized free-surface conditions on the solutions obtained from the first part, the wave generated is shown to exhibit the Kelvin ship wave pattern that agrees with observation. The effects of water depth and of submergence on the wave amplitude are also investigated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Following a series of eccentric contractions, that is stretching of the muscle while generating active tension, the length-tension relationship of isolated amphibian muscle has been shown to shift towards longer muscle lengths (Katz 1939; Wood et al. 1993). Here we report observations of electrically stimulated ankle extensor muscles of nine human subjects, demonstrating a similar shift in optimum angle for torque generation [3.9 (1.5)°] following exercise on an inclined treadmill that involved eccentric contractions in one leg. (All values are means with the SEMs in parentheses.) The shift in the unexercised, control leg was significantly less [mean 0.4 (0.7)°P 〈 0.05]. Correlated with this shift was a drop in torque [25.1 (5.6)% for the experimental leg; 1.6 (0.7)% for the control leg, P 〈 0.002]. Optimum angles returned to pre-exercise values by 2 days post-exercise, while torque took a week to recover. A similar shift in optimum length [12 (1.3)% of rest length] was obtained for five toad (Bufo marinus) sartorius muscles subjected to 25 eccentric contractions. Isometrically contracted control muscles showed a smaller shift [3.5 (1.6)%, n = 5]. Accompanying the shift was a drop in tension of 46 (3)% after the eccentric contractions [control isometric, 23 (6)%, P 〈 0.0001]. By 5 h after the eccentric contractions the shift had returned to control values, while tension had not recovered. When viewed with an electron microscope, sartorius muscles fixed immediately after the eccentric contractions exhibited many small, and a few larger, regions of myofilament disruption. In muscles fixed 5 h after the contractions, no small regions of disruption were visible, and the number of large regions was no greater than in those muscles fixed immediately after the eccentric contractions. These disruptions are interpreted as the cause of the shift in length-tension relationship.

    Notes: Abstract The hydrodynamic interaction between two vertical cylinders in water waves is investigated based on the linearized potential flow theory. One of the two cylinders is fixed at the bottom while the other is articulated at the bottom and oscillates with small amplitudes in the direction of the incident wave. Both the diffracted wave and the rediation wave are studied in the present paper. A simple analytical expression for the velocity potential on the surface of each cylinder is obtained by means of Graf's addition theorem. The wave-excited forces and moments on the cylinders, the added masses and the radiation damping coefficients of the oscillating cylinder are all expressed explicitly in series form. The coefficients of the series are determined by solving algebraic equations. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the effects of various parameters, such as the separation distance, the relative size of the cylinders, and the incident angle, on the first-order and steady second-order forces, the added masses and radiation-damping coefficients as well as the response of the oscillating cylinder.

    Notes: Abstract In his writings on teaching, Isreal Scheffler has argued for the close connection between teaching and reason, an argument which can be summarized by, “Teaching is. . an initiation into open rational discussion.” This essay examines Schefflier's thesis in the light of criticisms drawn from feminist writings on teaching. It is argued that Scheffler's thesis is consistent with a view of teaching in which it can be achieved through “kindness, good example and the efficacy of unconscious imitation,” characteristics of the private, reproductive processes typical of women. It is then argued that Scheffler's concept of teaching is compatible with views of education that try to do justice to both reason and emotion, mind and feeling.
