Notes: No information is available concerning the target antigen(s) involved in drug-induced linear IgA disease. The purpose of this study was to define better drug-induced linear IgA desease by studying its immunopathological, immunoultrastructural and immunochemical characteristics in three patients. In the first patient. IgA deposits were seen in the lamina lucida. In the second and the third patients. IgA deposits were seen on each side of the lamina densa. Immunoblotting of the first patient's serum showed that IgA reacted with a protein of 230 kDa similar to the bullous pemphigoid-associated antigen 1 (BPAG 1). The second patient's serum did not react with specific bands. In the third patient IgA antibodies reacted with a protein of 97 kDa on epidermal extracts. Our findings suggest that, as in idiopathic forms, the target antigen is not unique in drug-induced linear IgA disease. In some patients, drug-induced linear IgA disease may represent an IgA class response to the BPAG 1.

Notes: Oxidation kinetics are reported for thin films of TiN, both directly exposed to a dry oxygen ambient and beneath polycrystalline Pt films of ∼100 nm thickness. Oxygen resonance backscattering spectrometry was used to detect thin oxide layers at the Pt/TiN interface produced by oxidation annealing at 550–650 °C. A linear oxidation rate law was observed for the buried TiN film, indicating the oxidation rate is independent of average titanium oxide thickness. The linear rate constant had an activation enthalpy of 2.4±0.1 eV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Oxidation kinetics are reported for TiN thin film diffusion barriers beneath polycrystalline Pt films of 50–200 nm thickness annealed in dry O2/N2 ambients of varying oxygen partial pressure and total pressure near 1 atm. Oxygen resonance backscattering spectrometry was used to detect thin oxide layers at the Pt/TiN interface produced by oxidation annealing at 475–650 °C. Over part of this temperature range, a linear oxidation rate law was observed for the buried TiN film, indicating the oxidation rate was independent of average titanium oxide thickness. Possible rate-controlling oxidation mechanisms are analyzed critically in light of the kinetic data and results from microstructural studies of the Pt/TiN specimens. We conclude that the rate-limiting step in the Pt/TiN oxidation process is diffusion of oxygen through the Pt grain boundaries. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Objectives To investigate the relation between antenatal clinic, obstetric day unit and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurements and 24-hour proteinuria levels in hypertensive pregnancies.Design An observational study.Participants Forty-eight women presenting with new hypertension after 20 weeks of gestation. Results The closest relation was found between ambulatory blood pressure measurements and 24-hour proteinuria levels. No significant relation was found between the conventional diastolic blood pressure threshold of 90 mmHg and 24-hour proteinuria levels. Conclusions Ambulatory blood pressure measurement gives better information about disease status in pre-eclampsia as assessed by proteinuria than does conventional sphygmomanometry.

Notes: A new levitation apparatus coupled to a synchrotron-derived x-ray source has been developed to study the structure of liquids at temperatures up to 3000 K. The levitation apparatus employs conical nozzle levitation using aerodynamic forces to stably position solid and liquid specimens at high temperatures. A 270 W CO2 laser was used to heat the specimens to desired temperatures. Two optical pyrometers were used to record the specimen temperature, heating curves, and cooling curves. Three video cameras and a video recorder were employed to obtain and record specimen views in all three dimensions. The levitation assembly was supported on a three-axis translation stage to facilitate precise positioning of the specimen in the synchrotron radiation beam. The levitation system was enclosed in a vacuum chamber with Be windows, connections for vacuum and gas flow, ports for pyrometry, video, and pressure measurements. The vacuum system included automatic pressure control and multi-channel gas flow control. A phosphor screen coupled to a high-resolution video microscope provided images of the x-ray beam and specimen shadow which were used to establish the specimen position. The levitation apparatus was integrated with x-ray diffractometers located at X-6B and X-25 beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source. X-ray structural measurements have been obtained on a number of materials including Al2O 3, Ni, Si, Ge, and other metallic and ceramic materials in the liquid state. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The instability of an arbitrarily shaped zonal jet on a midlatitude β-plane is considered within a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model with O(1) linear friction. Depending on the horizontal and vertical shear of the jet, it is susceptible to both barotropic and baroclinic instabilities. The linear stability boundaries are determined numerically for a parameter regime relevant to the Gulfstream. The weakly nonlinear (finite amplitude) evolution of the instabilities is shown to be governed by a Ginzburg-Landau equation and for arbitrary jet shapes the coefficients in this equation are computed numerically. The finite amplitude state is shown to become unstable to Benjamin-Feir sideband instabilities. The mixed baroclinic/barotropic character of the primary instability is crucial to this sideband instability which is shown to lead to complicated spatio-temporal behavior of the jet. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Short-term (〈 24 h) pilot tests play a key role in the selection and design of in situ air sparging systems. During air injection, changes in dissolved oxygen in ground water, water levels in wells, soil gas pressures, and soil gas contaminant concentrations are measured. These parameters are assumed to be indicators of air sparging feasibility and performance. In this work we assess the validity of this critical assumption. Data are presented from a study site where a typical short-term test was conducted for three days, followed by continued operation of a full-scale system for 110 days. Conventional sampling practices were augmented with more discrete and detailed assessment methods. In addition, a tracer gas was used to better investigate air distributions, vapor flow paths, and vapor recovery efficiency. The data illustrate that conclusions regarding the performance and applicability of air sparging can vary dramatically depending on the monitoring approach used. Samples collected for chemical analyses from conventional monitoring wells were clearly affected by the air sparging during, and for some time after, air injection. Results from this site suggest that typical pilot test measurements might be useful for assessing infeasibility, but do not yield sufficient information to extrapolate to long-term performance.

Notes: Abstract This review focuses on two phospholipase activities involved in eukaryotic signal transduction. The action of the phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C enzymes produces two well-characterized second messengers, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and diacylglycerol. This discussion emphasizes recent advances in elucidation of the mechanisms of regulation and catalysis of the various isoforms of these enzymes. These are especially related to structural information now available for a phospholipase C delta isozyme. Phospholipase D hydrolyzes phospholipids to produce phosphatidic acid and the respective head group. A perspective of selected past studies is related to emerging molecular characterization of purified and cloned phospholipases D. Evidence for various stimulatory agents (two small G protein families, protein kinase C, aand phosphoinositides) suggests complex regulatory mechanisms, and some studies suggest a role for this enzyme activity in intracellular membrane traffic.

Notes: Use of "less than lethal weapons" by police has generated extreme review and controversy in some highly publicized cases. Confronting hostility and aggressiveness, police officers cannot turn away and flee from a dangerous situation, forcing them to select the best available option for controlling the individual. Among the officers' choice of responses, oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray has proven to be extremely effective. However, this is not a risk-free weapon, and due to a number of suspect deaths following its use, it has become controversial. Investigates if OC spray reduced the frequency and level of use of force, and if its availability affected the number of suspect and officer injuries.
