Notes: Thermal expansions of the lattice parameters a and c of the system in the title have been measured by x-ray diffraction technique to investigate the nature of magnetic interactions as well as chemical bond in these systems. Our data reveals that a spontaneous magnetostriction caused by the Co–Co intrasublattice interaction in YCo4B (n=1) occurs in the c plane unlike YCo5 whose magnetostriction occurs only along the c axis. It is also found that the positive spontaneous magnetostriction of GdCo4B in the c plane can be divided into three contributions due to the Co–Co, Co–Gd, and Gd–Gd interactions in the crystal. Thermal expansion coefficients in the c plane in the paramagnetic temperature region strongly decrease with increasing n in the Gd system. This implies a significant covalent bonding in the R–B layer in the present compounds. These results are discussed on the basis of the results of energy band calculation together with the previous magnetic data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetoresistance in Au(001)-sandwiched Fe(001) ultrathin films was investigated at T=1.6 K. Effects of both the Fe layer and the Au cap layer were investigated using wedge-shaped Fe and Au cap layers. The total thicknesses of the films were kept much thinner than the mean free path of the conduction electrons in order to enhance the magnetoresistance by electron channeling between the surface and the substrate. The Fe wedge-shaped films in the range dFe=0–4 Å showed a granular-type giant magnetoresistance (GMR) because of a discontinuity in the Fe layer. The films with dFe=4–25 Å also showed that the GMR component through the Fe layer is continuous. In the Au cap wedge-shaped films, the GMR component nearly vanished at dAu cap=0. The MR ratio increased linearly with dAu cap in the range dAu cap=0–50 Å and saturated at dAu cap∼130 Å. Moreover, the CuO overlayer on the Au cap wedge-shaped film resulted in a 25% decrease in the MR ratio in the whole dAu cap range. These phenomena can be interpreted as differences in spin flip probability for electron reflections on the surface and at the interfaces. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetic anisotropy of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films and single crystals has been measured using vibrating sample and torque magnetometry. The magnetic anisotropy of thin films is dominated by strain anisotropy due to the lattice mismatch between the film and SrTiO3 substrate. The two and fourfold symmetries in the (110) and (001) films, respectively, can only be explained by stress anisotropy contributions (Kstress∼8.4×104 ergs/cm3). Magnetic anisotropy of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 single crystals, subject to no external stress, reveals a uniaxial anisotropy in the (100) plane of K1∼1.8×104 ergs/cm3 that can be attributed to magnetocrystalline effects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The morphology of the tongue of an adult Formosan serow was examined to compare it with that of the Japanese serow by macroscopical and scanning electron microscopical observations. The tongue was 13.5 cm in length and 82 g in weight. The apex showed a U-shaped outline. There were 340 fungiform papillae and 23 vallate papillae on both sides. Filiform, fungiform, conical and vallate papillae were found. Annular pads surrounding the vallate papillae were poorly developed. No lenticular or foliate papillae were seen on the dorsal surface. These findings indicate that the tongue of the Formosan serow is smaller and less complex morphologically than that of the Japanese serow.

Notes: Details of the morphology of the forestomach of the Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) were examined macroscopically, and by light and scanning electron microscopy. The rumen was sac-like in shape, and the right accessory longitudinal groove was not visible externally. The reticulum was relatively small, while the omasum was oval and large. Inside the rumen, even in the dorsal sac, the ruminal papillae were densely distributed, although absent on the pillars. The caudodorsal coronary pillar was indistinct. In the ruminoreticular fold, ruminal papillae were observed even on the reticulum side. In the reticulum, the primary reticular fold was apparent and the ill-defined secondary folds were also detected in some reticular cells. In the omasum, the omasal laminae of four sizes were recognized. The fourth order of laminae was occasionally absent. Histological sections of ruminal papillae revealed that softly keratinized epithelium covered the entire ruminal mucosa. In the reticulum, soft keratinized epithelium was observed throughout, with the exception of the tips of reticular papillae on which the epithelium showed evidence of hard keratinization. The epithelium of the omasal laminae was moderately keratinized. On the floor of the reticular groove, interlaminar area and in the omasal groove, the accumulations of numerous eosinophilic cells were observed in the superficial region. Under the scanning electron microscope, shallow transverse grooves were seen on the surface of the ruminal papillae. In general, the surface structure seemed to be similar to that of sheep rather than cattle. Cellular formations of the collagen fibrils were observed at the subepithelial region. In conclusion, examination of the forestomach allows classification of the Japanese serows as requiring an intermediate type of feeding habit and being between concentrate selectors and grass-roughage eaters from a morphological view.

Notes: The seasonal changes of the cytoskeletal protein expressions were immunohistochemically investigated in the testes of Japanese black bear, Ursus thibetanus japonicus. A strong immunoreaction for α-smooth muscle actin is restricted to the vascular smooth muscle cells and the peritubular cells which surround the seminiferous tubules by several layers throughout the year. Weak immunoreactions for B4 antigen and desmin were observed in the vascular smooth muscle cells and in a part of peritubular cells throughout the year. A strong immunoreaction for vimentin was also detected in the fibroblasts and Leydig cells, in addition to the vascular smooth muscle and epithelial cells and the peritubular cells throughout the year. A strong α-tubulin immunoreaction was detected in the elongating spermatids during the acrosome phase of spermiogenesis in May and June. The cytoplasm of several Sertoli cells was faintly immunoreacted for vimentin in the basal and lateral region, while an intense α-tubulin reaction was seen in the entire cytoplasm in May, April and June. In November, January and March, the immunoreactions for vimentin and α-tubulin strongly accumulate in a perinuclear region of Sertoli cells when developmental spermatids are not seen in the seminiferous tubules. These accumulations in the immunoreactions for vimentin and α-tubulin seem to be caused by the reduction in size of Sertoli cells cytoplasm with season. However, the seasonal changes of distributions in the cytoskeletal proteins are obscure in the bear testes. These results suggest that the contents of cytoskeletal proteins may not change in relation to the morphological differences with season in the testes of the seasonal breeders.

Notes: Abstract Ions of gold monomer and clusters emitted from a liquid metal ion source were mass-selected, and deposited on cleaved HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) surfaces and on amorphous carbon thin films at room temperature with the impinging energy E i from 0 to 500 eV. The coverage of deposited ions were 1/100 and 1/1000 monolayers on HOPG surfaces and 1/3 monolayers on carbon films. Scanning tunneling microscopy of the HOPG surfaces deposited with low impinging energy (E i〈50 eV) revealed that large clusters with diameters ranging from 2 to 5 nm and height of 1–2 layers were present instead of isolated monomers and original clusters. When E i was higher than 100 eV, HOPG surfaces were damaged and only bumpy surfaces were observed by STM. Transmission electron microscopy of Au+-deposited carbon films showed the formation of clusters with diameter 0.5–20 nm, depending on the E i and the time elapsed after deposition.

Notes: Abstract. The angular motion of a few-body system is described by introducing angles that depend on the positions of the particles. The most adequate angles are determined variationally. The numerical examples presented for the molecule, Li atom, antiprotonic helium atom, triton and alpha particle convincingly show that this method is an excellent alternative of the partial-wave decomposition of the wave function.
