Notes: [Auszug] The general theoretical definition of an insulator is a material in which the conductivity vanishes at the absolute zero of temperature. In classical insulators, such as materials with a band gap, vanishing conductivities lead to diverging resistivities. But other insulators can show more ...

Notes: Abstract. Background: Diffuse peritoneal tumor infiltration is well recognized on computed tomography (CT) and is usually associated with carcinomatosis. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the CT findings of peritoneal spread from primary gastrointestinal lymphomas. Methods: Abdominal CT scans in eight patients with peritoneal lymphomatosis were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were 12–75 years old (mean = 48 years); with six patients were male and two were female. Pathologic evidence of primary lymphoma was available by colonoscopic biopsy of the terminal ileum in seven cases and by gastroscopic biopsy of the stomach in one case. All patients had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We analyzed CT findings in view of presence or loculation of ascites, abnormal patterns of mesentery and omentum, presence of peritoneal enhancement, presence of low attenuation and location of lymph nodes, and primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. Results: Although ascites was present in all patients, there was no loculation. The involvement of mesentery was present in seven patients, and the stellate pattern was the common type (4/7). The involvement of omentum was present in seven patients, and the common type was omental cake (3/7). Peritoneal enhancement was present in six patients. Enlarged lymph nodes were present in six patients, mainly at the retroperitoneum and mesentery, and showed centrally low attenuation in half the patients. Conclusion: Patterns of tumor involvement of mesentery, omentum, and peritoneum seen in peritoneal lymphomatosis are indistinguishable from those seen in peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculous peritonitis. However, ascites without any loculation or septation and diffuse distribution of enlarged lymph nodes were helpful signs of peritoneal lymphomatosis.

Notes: Abstract Investigations were performed to confirm the optimal in vitro culture condition for callus induction and plant regeneration, to observe if somoclonal variation occurs among regenerated plants at the ploidy level and to analyse the chromosomal location of 5S and 18S-26S rRNA gene families using fluorescence in situ hybridization in callus-derived plants of Allium cyaneum. High-est callus initiation was achieved with bulb explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2,4-D and BAP at 1 mg l–1 each. A total of 195 plants was obtained when using MS medium supplemented with 1 mg l–1 NAA and 5 mg l–1 BAP; about 92% were diploid having 2n=16; 8% showed a variation in ploidy level. Using digoxigenin-labelled 5S rRNA and biotin-labelled 18S-26S rRNA gene probes, we compared the fluorescence in situ hybridization patterns of autotetraploid plants with the A. cyaneum wild type. The 5S rRNA gene sites were detected on the interstitial region in the short arm of chromosome 4 and on the interstitial region in both arms of chromosome 7. The 18S-26S rRNA gene sites were detected on the terminal region of the short arm, including the satellite of chromosome 5, as well as on a part of chromosome B. The chromosomal location of both rRNA genes in regenerated autotetraploid plants corresponded to those of the wild species.

Notes: Abstract Protective coatings of CVD diamond have been bonded to infrared-transmitting optical windows of ZnSe with As-Se-S system chalcogenide glasses of which the refractive index is made to closely match that of diamond by the “optical brazing” process. To select optimal composition in the As-Se-S system, the Tg, Ts, reflective index and infrared-transmittance of the glass samples were measured. Measurement of transmittance with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer after the brazing process confirmed that scattering losses were greatly reduced. Infrared transmittance of ZnSe windows with a thin film diamond coating bonded to chalcogenide glass was about 63%.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the interaction of two hole defects affecting fatigue crack initiation life and propagation behavior. The location of two hole defects was characterized by an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is studies under bending for AI 5086. When defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of the local plastic stratin strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore, the authors introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation are at stress concentrations and proposed a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two hole defects were studied experimentally.
