    Notes: Abstract: Beta decay of 58Zn has been studied for the first time. A new laser ion-source concept has been used to produce mass-separated sources for beta and gamma spectroscopy. The half-life of 58Zn was determined to be 86(18) ms. Comparisons are made with previous data from charge-exchange reactions. Our Gamow–Teller strength to the 1+ state at 1051 keV excitation in 58Cu agrees well with the value extracted from a recent (3He, t) study. Extensive shell-model calculations are presented.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The growth of a cholesteatoma requires angioneogenesis in the connective tissue of the perimatrix. Angioneogenesis is also needed for wound healing as a host response to tissue injury. Normal wound repair is conducted through a wide number of growth factors. Basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) plays a pivotal role in wound repair. This cytokine exerts its effects through stimulation of a wide range of target cells. B-FGF is chemotactic and mitogenic for fibroblasts, endothelial cells and keratinocytes. In addition, b-FGF can stimulate the production of collagenase and plasminogen activators to enhance fibroblast proliferation and angioneogenesis. Its necessity for normal wound repair has been confirmed by several workers. Method: In order to demonstrate angioneogenesis in the cholesteatoma perimatrix the distribution of b-FGF as the pivotal cytokine of the process was investigated in the perimatrix of 18 cholesteatoma specimens. Results: B-FGF could be observed in 12 of 18 specimens (66%) in close approximation to histological signs of inflammation and wound healing. Areas with b-FGF also exhibited proliferation of the covering squamous epithelium. Cholesteatoma matrix tissue without inflammation or any sign of wound healing did not express b-FGF (6 of 18). Conclusion: Histological changes and distribution pattern of b-FGF in the perimatrix of cholesteatoma in the present study indicate that the perimatrix cells and substances of the wound healing cascade may play an important role in cholesteatoma development, angiogenesis and growth.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Entwicklung und Wachstum eines Cholesteatomsackes erfordern Gefäßneubildung in der ernährenden Perimatrix. Im Säugetierorganismus beeinflußt der „basic fibroblast growth factor” (b-FGF) die Angioneogenese bei normalem Größenwachstum und der Wundheilung. Dieses Zytokin wird bei der Wundheilung von Fibroblasten und Makrophagen freigesetzt, Zellen die in großer Zahl in der Perimatrix des Cholesteatoms vorkommen. Der B-FGF wurde bereits im Cholesteatomgewebe untersucht. Bisher ist unklar, wann b-FGF in der Cholesteatomperimatrix nachweisbar wird. Methode und Ergebnisse: Zur Untersuchung wurde der b-FGF in der Perimatrix des Cholesteatomsackes immunhistologisch dargestellt. Zur Auswertung gelangten 18 intraoperativ gewonnene Gewebeproben von klinisch unterschiedlichen Cholesteatomen. Der b-FGF konnte in 12 (66%) der Proben nachgewiesen werden. Dabei wurde b-FGF nicht kontinuierlich exprimiert, sondern war nur in Umgebung von entzündlichem Granulationsgewebe und Wundheilungsvorgängen zu beobachten. Das unmittelbar anliegende Epithel der Matrix zeigte deutliche Hyperproliferationszeichen. In dünner Matrix, ohne erkennbare Invasion von Entzündungszellen, war kein b-FGF nachweisbar. Schlußfolgerung: Die Ergebnisse lassen einen Einfluß von Wundheilungsvorgängen in der Perimatrix auf das Wachstum, die Gefäßneubildung und das Verhalten eines Cholesteatomsackes wahrscheinlich werden.

    Notes: Abstract An encapsulated mass of brain tissue was found in the retroperitoneum of a fetus of gestational week 15 and a boy of age 3 years. The masses possessed fibrous tissue that bound them to the spine and intraspinal connective tissue, respectively, but there was no evidence of direct continuity of the ectopic brain tissue with the normal central nervous system. There was no dysraphism. In our fetal case, possible Foix-Alajouanine anomaly was additionally found. The ectopic neural tissue in the retroperitoneal region may be termed “abdominal brain.” In the literature, an identical state has been described in the head (paracranial region) but there are no other records of the paraspinal region. Despite the different locations of the masses (head/paracranial or retroperitoneum/paraspinal), these ectopic brain masses should belong to the same disorder spectrum of the paraneuraxial neural ectopia, a new concept.

    Notes: Abstract We examined the feasibility of using changes in spatial patterns of ants-distribution on experimental plots as an indicator of response to environmental stress. We produced contour maps based on relative abundances of the three most common genera of ants based on pit-fall trap captures. Relative abundance of Conomyrma spp. decreased, relative abundance of Solenopsis spp. increased, and relative abundance of Pogonomyrmex spp. remained relatively unchanged. The contour maps showed long-term changes in foraging activity and/or distribution of colonies of ants in response to grazing by domestic livestock. This study demonstrated that analysis of spatial patterns of ant activity derived from relative abundances of ants in pit-fall traps provided interpretable data for developing an indicator of exposure to ecosystem stress.

    Notes: Abstract We studied indicators of rangeland health on benchmark sites with long, well documented records of protection from stress by domestic livestock or histories of environmental stress and vegetation change. We measured ecosystem properties (metrics) that were clearly linked to ecosystem processes. We focused on conservation of soil and water as key processes in healthy ecosystems, and on maintenance of biodiversity and productivity as important functions of healthy ecosystems. Measurements from which indicators of rangeland health were derived included: sizes of unvegetated patches, cover and species composition of perennial grasses, cover and species composition of shrubs and herbaceous perennials, soil slaking, and abundance and species composition of the bird fauna. Indicators that provided an interpretable range of values over the gradient from irreversibly degraded sites to healthy sites included: bare patch index, cover of long-lived grasses, palatability index, and weighted soil surface stability index. Indicators for which values above a threshold may serve as an indicator of rangeland health include: cover of plant species toxic to livestock, cover of exotic species, and cover of increaser species. Several other indicator metrics were judged not sensitive nor interpretable. Examples of application of rangeland health indicators to evaluate the success of various restoration efforts supported the contention that a suite of indicators are required to assess rangeland health. Bird species diversity and ant species diversity were not related to the status of the sample site and were judged inadequate as indicators of maintenance of biodiversity.

    Notes: Abstract Ecosystems, despite their diversity, respond to stress in similar ways. The major pressures which cause the transformation of systems from healthy states to pathological states are classified into four groups: physical restructuring, overharvesting, waste residuals, and the introduction of non-native species. Signs of Ecosystem Distress Syndrome (EDS) are briefly examined in three contrasting ecosystems: desert grasslands, the Great Lakes, and the Baltic Sea. The issue is raised as to the difficulty in discerning between healthy ecosystems, recovering from a natural disturbance, and those ecosystems that have lost their original resilience due to anthropogenic stress. Knowledge of site history and a rigourous monitoring program are important in the evaluation of EDS. An assessment of how ecosystem services are affected is indicative of the consequences to the human component of ecosystems. Management strategies which are employed to mitigate the signs of EDS are usually initiated after resilience is lost or the ecosystem has transformed to an alternate, stress-induced, stable state. It is proposed that preventive strategies measure signs of EDS that serve as early warning signals, combined with "fitness tests" that measure ecosystem response to natural perturbations. The fitness test for ecosystems is based on the premise that unstressed systems are more resilient to natural disturbances than stressed systems.
