Notes: Abstract A perturbation theory is developed for the integrodifferential Landau-Lifshits equation that describes the state of 2π-domain walls in ferromagnetic films. The static and dynamic parameters of a 2π-domain wall are determined, taking into account its micromagnetic structure. The limits of applicability of geometric domain wall models are indicated.

Notes: The small model of scaled honeycomb surface-plasma source for intense multibeam H−(D−) ion production was studied. The increased sizes of the honeycomb cells (to 3×3 cm2) and of discharge layer thickness (to 1.5 cm) were tested. The plasma injection from the hollow hydrogen–cesium cathodes was used for a high-current semiplanotron discharge uniform operation at a low gas pressure. An optimal hydrogen pressure was about 1 Pa at maximal negative ion production. Extraction of H− ions from four emission apertures of 4×10 mm size each produces four elementary H− beams with intensity up to 100 mA each. No essential isotopic effect was found—the intensity of D− beams had about the same value (when discharge was operated in deuterium). © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A Raman study of a highly oriented PbTiO3 thin film deposited on a MgO single crystal has been performed as a function of the temperature. The results have been compared with those obtained from a single crystal prepared from the same batch and those reported in the literature for polycrystalline thin films and single crystals. A shift in the transition temperature is observed from the soft mode behavior, together with more usual lower values of its frequency, which are both related to effective hydrostatic pressure due to the clamping of grains by their neighbors in the distorted tetragonal structure. The large soft mode linewidth and its integrated intensity, which do not vanish at the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition temperature, have been interpreted in terms of the coupling of this mode (and more generally of all polar phonons) with the static strain fields originating from the clamping effect and the epitaxial conditions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Four cases of choroid plexitis of the brain (two with cryptococcosis and two with tuberculosis) are presented. The four patients showed either unilateral enlargement (3) or bilateral enlargement (1) and dense enhancement of the choroid plexus in the lateral ventricles (4) and fourth ventricle (1) in association with clinical findings of leptomeningitis. All patients had unilateral cystic dilatation of the temporal horn of the lateral ventricle presumably secondary to entrapment of the temporal horn and extensive oedema around the ipsilateral ventricle.

Notes: Abstract Data on the electrical conductivity, the thermoelectric power, and the Hall and Nernst-Ettingshausen effects in the temperature range from 77 to 400 K for the a solid solution PbTe-SnTe with a high In content (3 at. %) and additional doping with chlorine and thallium are presented. Specifically, the Nernst-Ettingshausen coefficient exhibits properties which are unusual for IV–VI semiconductors: It is positive and decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. The experimental data are discussed on the basis of a model in which the main transport mechanism is hopping conduction along strongly localized electronic states of the In impurity. Conduction along delocalized states of the conduction band makes a substantial contribution to the effects observed in a transverse magnetic field. The model gives satisfactory agreement with experiment, including the sign, magnitude, and temperature dependence of the Nernst-Ettingshausen coefficient.

Notes: Abstract The asymptotic behavior of the spectra for large values of the scattering vector for the case of elastic multiple small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. An expansion of the spectrum in terms of the reciprocal of the magnitude of the momentum transfer is obtained taking account of the influence of the instrumental line. It is shown that, to within some factor, the leading term of the expansion is identical to the differential single-scattering cross section averaged over a statistical ensemble of particles; several subsequent terms in the expansion are calculated and the range of applicability of the resulting expressions is determined. The asymptotic behavior of the multiple SANS spectrum is measured, using a two-crystal neutron spectrometer, for samples of an HTSC ceramic, the alloy Fe-Ni, and Al powder. The agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions is analyzed.

Notes: Abstract The Hall coefficient, thermoelectric power, and electrical conductivity in PbTe doped with La, Pr, Sm, and Gd are investigated in the temperature range (77–700) K. The impurity atoms act as donors with an electrical activity that increases with temperature until the fraction of electrically active lanthanide atoms (Ln) reaches values close to or slightly more than half of their total number. A decrease in the electron mobility and a change in the thermoelectric power relative to their values in PbTe〈I〉 are also noted. At low temperatures, the Seebeck coefficient in PbTe〈Ln〉 is found to be higher than in PbTe〈I〉, while at high temperatures it is lower. The data are interpreted by invoking a band of impurity resonant states, whose energetic position and number are functions of composition and temperature. The experimental data imply that when La and Pr dope PbTe, the electrical activity of the compound is dominated by intrinsic donorlike defects that form when Ln is incorporated in the ratio LnTe.

Notes: Abstract Experimental data on the effect of thallium and sodium impurities on the lattice heat conductivity of PbTe at room temperature are reported. Because the lattice of lead chalcogenides is strongly polarized near charged impurities, the effect of impurities on the lattice heat conductivity depends substantially on their charge state. This property of the material has been used to determine the charge state of the thallium impurity in PbTe. The results obtained argue for a model of quasi-local thallium-impurity states which assumes low electron-correlation energy at an impurity center.

Notes: Abstract Specific models of domain walls are used to investigate conditions for the single-domain state and quasi-single-domain states in structures with magnetic materials having a quality factor higher than one. It is shown that the critical thickness of the magnetic film in a tangentially magnetized system decreases monotonically as the magnetizing field increases from zero to the transition from the collinear to the homogeneous angular phase and then increases monotonically with increasing external field. In a thin isolated magnetic film, the size of the domains increases exponentially with decreasing thickness. This dependence is logarithmic near the transition to the single-domain state for a film coated on two sides and obeys a power law for a film coated on one side. The establishment of a single-domain state and characteristic features in the asymptotic behavior of the domain structure in magnetic films with and without coatings can be attributed to differences in the asymptotic behavior of the field of a single domain wall.
