Notes: We have grown epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) and La2/3Ba1/3MnO3 (LBMO) thin films as well as La2/3Ba1/3MnO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by pulsed-laser deposition. The microstructure of the films was analyzed by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A significant effect of strain due to lattice mismatch was found. Whereas the thick LBMO films show perfect epitaxy and grow coherently strained over the full film thickness, the LSMO films were found to be composed of two layers separated by an intrinsic interface region containing a high density of defects. The approximately 60 nm thick bottom layer grows coherently on the SrTiO3 (STO) substrate and is highly strained, whereas the top layer is almost strain free. The LBMO/STO heterostructures are coherently strained and show a very low density of defects and sharp interfaces. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have fabricated Josephson field-effect transistors based on YBa2Cu3O7−δ bicrystal grain-boundary junctions (GBJs) and epitaxial SrTiO3 films as gate insulators. The SrTiO3 gate insulator shows high products of the breakdown field Ebd and the dielectric constant εr up to Ebdεr=1.3×1010 V/m allowing measurements over a wide range of applied gate electric-field Eg. The critical current Ic of the GBJs is found to depend highly nonlinear on Eg. Remarkably, the measured Ic(Eg) are very similar to the εr(Eg) curves. This strongly suggests that the observed electric-field effect is not due to a field-induced change in carrier concentration but is related to the dielectric properties of the SrTiO3 gate insulator. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Background: This study examined prevalence of perceived need for mental health assistance, characteristics of people with a perceived need, and how persons with a need who sought help were different from those who did not. Methods: A national random phone survey (n = 1,394) was conducted in Israel, which included questions about (1) perceived need for mental health assistance and (2) help seeking. Results: Prevalence of life-time and recent perceived need for males was 21% and 10.7%, and for females 31% and 15.1%. Of those with a perceived need, 31.4% of males and 41.6% of females had gone for help. Based on logistic regression models, the variables associated with need were being female, divorced, having a chronic physical disease, and low income (for males only), while predictors of help seeking were living in a big city and not being a recent immigrant. The major sources of help in descending order were: mental health professionals (46%), family physician (25%), family or friends (19%), and other (10%). Conclusions: A majority of people who feel that they need help for mental health problems do not get help.

Notes: Abstract High quality, centimeter size single crystals of Ca14−xLaxCu24O41 have been successfully grown using the travelling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method in association with an image furnace. Crystals grown under oxygen pressures up to 13 bar are single phase for 2 ≤ x ≤ 5. Growth initiated on a single crystalline seed, in combination with an appropriate solvent disk, yields a single domain almost directly from the beginning of the growth. Crystals were characterized by EDX, TGA and X-ray powder diffraction. In addition magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements were performed. Long range antiferromagnetic order occurs at T N =9.7 K for x La = 5, whereas for lower La concentrations T N is considerably suppressed.

Notes: Abstract Bordetella pertussis and B. bronchiseptica are genetically very closely related but differ significantly in their virulence properties. Using Representational Difference Analysis (RDA), 11 DNA fragments specific for B. pertussis Tohama I or B. bronchiseptica BB7865 were identified. All B. bronchiseptica BB7865-derived fragments also hybridized with chromosomal DNA from B. parapertussis but not from the B. pertussis strains Tohama I and W28, underlining the close phylogenetic relationship between B. bronchiseptica and B. parapertussis. The B. pertussis type strain BP18323 is a special case, as it contains DNA sequences characteristic for both B. pertussis and B. bronchiseptica. As demonstrated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, several of the BB7865-derived fragments are present on a single 30-kb XbaI fragment. Based on the sequences of putative coding regions, four of these fragments may code for proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism or transport. In agreement with this notion, a mutant for one of these loci synthesizes a significantly altered lipopolysaccharide that lacks the O-specific side chains. The analysis of the corresponding genomic region in various Bordetella species showed that this locus is present in B. bronchiseptica and B. parapertussis but not in B. pertussis. This confirms that the RDA approach has identified a novel strain-specific LPS biosynthesis locus which accounts for the differences between the LPS structures elaborated by different Bordetella species.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the thermal conductivity κ of stripe ordering La 2–x Sr x NiO 4. In particular, long range stripe order is well established for x = 1/3. For this composition κ is enhanced in the charge ordering phase and exhibits a clear maximum at low T. Even small deviations from this stochiometry cause a strong change of κ: the low T-maximum is suppressed and no anomaly is observed at high T. Our data confirm that the stripe phase is most stable for x = $$\tfrac{{\text{1}}}{{\text{3}}}$$ . Moreover, we find clear differences in the thermal conductivity for x 〉 $$\tfrac{{\text{1}}}{{\text{3}}}$$ and for x 〈 $$\tfrac{{\text{1}}}{{\text{3}}}$$ , respectively, which indicates different properties of the stripe ordered phase in these two regions of the phase diagram.

Notes: Abstract We present thermal expansion measurements on a La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 single crystal in external magnetic fields. Clear anomalies of the thermal expansion are observed at the superconducting transition. We have studied in detail the anisotropic influence of external fields on the anomalies. As expected, the field dependence is maximum for B ‖ c and minimum for B ⊥ c. The measured angular dependence corresponds to that of an anisotropic 3d superconductor with an anisotropy parameter γ ≃ 18.
