    Notes: Aims. To assess the prevalence of inhalant use among urban American Indian youth and to examine differences between inhalant users and non-users. Design. Baseline (T1) self-report questionnaires completed in 5th-6th grade and at seven annual follow-up assessments (T2-T8). Settings. Seattle metropolitan area. Participants. Two hundred and twenty-four Indian youth. Measurements. Youth-completed measures of substance use, ethnic self-identity, involvement in traditional Indian activities, family conflict, family history of alcoholism, peer and sibling deviance, self-esteem, delinquency, aggression, anxiety, depression, sensation seeking, conduct disorder and alcohol dependence. Findings. Lifetime inhalant use was reported by 12.3% of adolescents. At T1, inhalant users had significantly lower perceived self-worth and average annual household incomes and significantly greater density of familial alcoholism and expression of aggressive and delinquent conduct than non-users. Aggressive behavior was the most important T1 predictor of inhalant use. Lifetime conduct and alcohol dependence disorders were 3.3 and 2.6 times more prevalent among inhalant users than non-users at T5. Inhalant users had more extensive deviant peer networks, were more sensation-seeking, and evidenced lower perceived self-worth than non-users at T8. Conclusions. Inhalant use was less prevalent in this particular sample of urban Indian adolescents than in most studies of reservation Indian youth. As with other studies of inhalant abuse, aggressive and delinquent males of low SES and low-perceived self-worth with family histories of alcohol dependence, were at highest risk for inhalant use.

    Notes: A 3-month-old infant treated for 3 weeks for suspected bronchiolitis, developed episodes of profound desaturation. A lateral X-ray showed displacement and compression of the trachea. Respiratory arrest, from which she was successfully resuscitated, occurred just before MRI scan. The mass was removed at thoracotomy and a histological diagnosis of a bronchgenic cyst was made. Mediastinal masses in babies are relatively rare, and the situation in which they present with acute respiratory distress may prove extremely challenging to the anaesthetist. Bronchogenic cysts are difficult to diagnose pre-operatively and awareness may assist in the peri-operative management of these infants.

    Notes: Abstract  The UK Valid Analytical Measurement Programme has pump-primed developments in chemical metrology, through a major project on reference methodology and reference materials. This paper provides an overview of developments during 1994–1997 and covers work on primary methods for trace inorganic and trace organic analysis, including the use of isotope dilution mass spectrometry; studies of sample pre-treatment, including digestion, extraction, and separation aimed at improving this weak link in the traceability chain; prioritisation, production and marketing of both pure substance and matrix reference materials; and international collaboration concerned with interlaboratory comparisons and the development of concepts, terminology and systems to underpin the international chemical measurement system. References are given to a number of papers covering specific parts of the programme.

    Notes: Abstract  The use of reference materials is the most pragmatic means by which the analyst can achieve comparability of data. Reference material producers therefore need to have adequate quality systems in place for ensuring the reliability of their materials. In order to provide guidance to both producers and assessors, ISO Guide 34 has recently been produced detailing the quality system requirements for the production of reference materials. CITAC, REMCO and ILAC are now collaborating in the revision of this guide to produce a free-standing document detailing the general requirements for the competence of reference material producers. This paper discusses some of the more important issues described in these documents. The possible formation of an international register containing details of a reference material producer's quality system status is also discussed.

Dynamic parameters such as the extension of the ablation cloud, the initial velocity and momentum of the ablated particles as well as the ablation threshold, the ablated mass, and the particle size were investigated. The ablation plume was made visible with a stroboscopic technique. For a fluence of 3.1 J/cm2 the average initial velocity of the ejected particles was deduced from the extension of the plume to range from 120–400 m/s. Measurements of the recoil momentum using a sensitive pendulum led to values between 0.5 and 2.0 mm g/s. All measured properties were related to the spectroscopically determined absorption coefficient of cornea αcornea. Where absorption due to proteins is high (at λ=6.2 and 6.5 μm), ablated mass, velocity and recoil momentum behave according to αcornea. For the first time, variations of the ablation plume from pulse to pulse were observed. Those, as well as the particle size, not only depend on the absorption coefficient, but also on the predominant absorber.

    Notes: Abstract Orbital debris environment models are essential in predicting the characteristics of the entire debris environment, especially for altitude and size regimes where measurement data is sparse. Most models are also used to assess mission collision risk. The IDES (Integrated Debris Evolution Suite) simulation model has recently been upgraded by including a new sodium–potassium liquid coolant droplet source model and a new historical launch database. These and other features of IDES are described in detail. The accuracy of the IDES model is evaluated over a wide range of debris sizes by comparing model predictions to three major types of debris measurement data in low Earth orbit. For the large-size debris population, the model is compared with the spatial density distribution of the United States (US) Space Command Catalog. A radar simulation model is employed to predict the detection rates of mid-size debris in the field of view of the US Haystack radar. Finally, the small-size impact flux relative to a surface of the retrieved Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) spacecraft is predicted. At sub-millimetre sizes, the model currently under-predicts the debris environment encountered at low altitudes by approximately an order of magnitude. This is because other small-size debris sources, such as paint flakes have not yet been characterised. Due to the model enhancements, IDES exhibits good accuracy when predicting the debris environment at decimetre and centimetre sizes. Therefore, the validated initial conditions and the high fidelity future traffic model enables IDES to make long-term debris environment projections with more confidence.
