Notes: Complex coupled GaInAsP/InP distributed feedback lasers were developed based on maskless focused ion beam lithography. By combining implantation enhanced wet chemical etching and implantation induced thermal quantum well intermixing a refractive index grating was defined self-aligned to a gain grating forming a complex coupled grating lateral to a ridge waveguide. The devices show single mode emission at wavelengths around 1.55 μm with linewidths 〈2 MHz and side mode suppression ratios of more than 40 dB for continuous wave operation at room temperature. A high single mode yield (〉90%) over a large tuning range (88 nm) was achieved. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A 66-year-old woman died of internal bleeding and pulmonary fat embolism following repeated massive blows from a wickerwork carpetbeater and an electric cable. The initial autopsy diagnosis was natural death. A second autospy on the exhumed body and an intensive criminal investigation revealed a long history of maltreatment by two sisters with whom the victim lived. The maltreatment occurred during exorcisms with the purported purpose of ridding the victim of her possession by Satan. The perpetrators and the victim belonged to the same pseudoreligous sect. The elder of the two sisters had been previously convicted of a fatal exorcism maltreatment of a 17-year-old girl.

Notes: Abstract Experimental studies have shown that diffuse axonal injury is usually induced by positive or negative acceleration mechanisms. In order to determine the reliability of axonal injury (AI) as a marker of this type of traumatic insult, we compared cases of trauma-induced focal cortical hemorrhage without dural involvement (n = 67) with cases of trauma-induced subdural bleeding without cortical hemorrhage (n = 26). Both groups exhibited a wide range of post-traumatic survival times. The injuries in the first group were caused mainly by direct impact to the head, those in the second by acceleration/deceleration mechanisms. The investigations were based primarily on immunohistochemical demonstration of antibodies targeted to β-amyloid precursor protein (β-APP) in the pons as a marker of AI and the results were assessed semiquantitatively. No significant differences were found between the two groups. In both groups AI was detected in 80–100% of cases with survival times of more than 3 h and two thirds of all positive cases showed pronounced positivity. Additional comparison of cases of brain death due to mechanical trauma (n = 14) with cases of brain death due to non-mechanical trauma (n = 18) also disclosed no significant intergroup differences. Finally, investigations of the pons in cases of non-traumatic death due to cerebral hypoxia/ischemia (n = 51) demonstrated AI with the same frequency as in the other groups, although the expression tended to be less pronounced. Our results confirm that β-APP expression in the pons is a reliable indicator of AI but does not discriminate between injuries caused by traumatic strain or shearing mechanisms and secondary damage due to cerebral hypoxia/ ischemia or edema. In the large majority of cases with prolonged post-traumatic survival, it can therefore be assumed that AI in the pons is the consequence of primary and/or secondary events or a combination of both, as is common in non-missile head injury survived for more than 90–120 min. Therefore, positive differentiation of the type of biomechanical event based on this criterion alone is not possible.

Notes: Abstract We examined the abundance and spatial distribution of major phylogenetic groups of the domain Bacteria in hindguts of the Australian lower termite Mastotermes darwiniensis by using in situ hybridization with group-specific, fluorescently labeled, rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes. Between 32.0 ± 7.2% and 52.3 ± 8.2% of the DAPI-stained cells in different hindgut fractions were detected with probe EUB338, specific for members of the domain Bacteria. About 85% of the prokaryotic cells were associated with the flagellates of the thin-walled anterior region (P3a) and the thick wall of the posterior region (P3b/P4) of the hindgut, as shown by DAPI staining. At most, half of the EUB338-detected cells hybridized with one of the other probes that targeted a smaller assemblage within the bacterial domain. In most fractions, cells were found in varying numbers with probe ALF1b, which targeted members of the α-Proteobacteria, whereas substantial amounts of sulfate-reducing bacteria, gram-positive bacteria with a high DNA G+C content and members of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium cluster of the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides (CFB) phylum could be detected only in the wall fraction of P3b/P4. This clearly indicates that the hindgut microhabitats differ in the composition of their microbial community. In situ hybridization of cryosections through the hindgut showed only low numbers of bacteria attached to the P3a wall. In contrast, the wall of P3b was densely colonized by rod- and coccus-shaped bacteria, which could be assigned to the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium cluster of the CFB phylum and to the group of gram-positive bacteria with a high DNA G+C content, respectively. Oxygen concentration profiles determined with microelectrodes revealed steep oxygen gradients both in P3a and P3b. Oxygen was consumed within 100 μm below the gut surface, and anoxic conditions prevailed in the central portions of both gut regions, indicating that oxygen consumption in the hindgut does not depend on the presence of a biofilm on the hindgut wall.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Problem: The formulation of requirements is necessary to control the goals of a PACS project. Furthermore, in this way, the scope of functionality necessary to support radiological working processes becomes clear. Method: Definitions of requirements and specification are formulated independently of systems according to the IEEE standard ’’Recommended Practice for Software Requirements Specifications’’. Definitions are given in the Request for Information, specifications in the Request for Proposal. Functional and non-functional requirements are distinguished. The solutions are rated with respect to scope, appropriateness and quality of implementation. Results: A PACS checklist was created according to the methods described above. It is published on the homepage of the ’’Arbeitsgemeinschaft Informationstechnologie’’ (AGIT) within the ’’Deutsche Röntgengesellschaft’’ (DRG) (http://www.uni-marburg. de/mzr/agit). Conclusion: The checklist provides a discussion forum which should contribute to an agreement on accepted basic PACS functionalities.

Notes: Abstract. We calculate the dipole amplitude for the decay $\mu\rightarrow e\gamma$ and related processes in the left-right supersymmetric model when parity breaking occurs at a considerably large scale. The low-energy flavor violation in the model originates either from the nonvanishing remnants of the left-right symmetry in the slepton mass matrix or from the direct flavor changing lepton-slepton-neutralino interaction. The result is found to be large and already accessible with current experimental accuracy for supersymmetric masses not far above the electroweak scale. It also provides nontrivial constraints on the lepton mixing in the model.

Notes: Abstract  Isolated renal Aspergillus abscess is a very rare complication of HIV infection. It usually occurs in patients with severe immune deficiency. The case of a 29-year-old HIV-infected homosexual male, a nonintravenous drug abuser, who developed a right renal Aspergillus abscess despite normalization of the CD4+ cell count after highly active antiretroviral treatment is described. When antimicrobial treatment failed (amphotericin B followed by itraconazole), he was cured by right nephrectomy and remains in good health 3 months later with no recurrence. In cases of Aspergillus renal abscess in HIV-infected patients, surgery is the treatment of choice, especially in the current era of highly active antiretroviral therapy.
