    Notes: The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio of a ferromagnetic tunnel junction with a spin-valvelike structure of NiFe/CoFex/Al–O/CoFex/NiFe/IrMn/Al is dependent upon CoFe composition. MR ratio increases with increasing Fe content, and shows a maximum of 42% for Fe content 26 at. % after annealing at 225 °C. Before annealing, the bias voltage dependence depend on Fe content, however, the bias voltage dependence did not depend on Fe content after annealing. We think that the increasing defect states in the barrier layer with the increasing Fe content in CoFex layer cause the degradation of the bias voltage dependence. After annealing, the defect states of samples decrease to same level, and the bias voltage dependencies of samples are improved and become same. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: InGaAs layers with In composition of 0.57 were grown with metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) using graded buffer layers on exactly oriented and misoriented GaAs(100) substrates. No mirror-like surface was obtained at growth temperatures between 570 °C and 630 °C. A mirror-like surface was achieved at a growth temperature of 450 °C. The threading dislocation density in the layer grown at 450 °C on the GaAs substrate misoriented toward (111)A was determined to be 1×107 cm−2 using transmission electron microscopy. Photoluminescence results also confirmed that the density of recombination centers in layers grown at 450 °C was low. Low temperature growth with MOVPE was found to be effective in InGaAs layers on GaAs substrates with high In composition above 0.4. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2), a major cyclo-oxygenase metabolite of arachidonic acid in mast cells, induces bronchoconstriction in the human lung. It has been reported that mice lacking PGD receptor fail to develop the bronchial hyper-responsiveness upon ovalbumin challenge, suggesting that PGD2 functions as a mediator of allergic asthma.Objective To determine if there are any mutations associated with the development of asthma in the haematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase (H-PGDS) gene and the human prostanoid DP receptor (PTGDR) gene.Methods and results We screened the 5′flanking and coding regions of the H-PGDS gene and the PTGDR gene by direct sequence. We identified one variant in intron 2 (IVS2 + 11 A 〉 C) and one variant in intron 3 (IVS3 + 13T 〉 C) of the H-PGDS gene, and two variants in the 5′flanking region of the PTGDR gene (−197T 〉 C and −2C 〉 T). The IVS3 + 13T 〉 C and −197T 〉 C variants were rare, appearing only once in 48 subjects. transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) analysis of 144 asthmatic families revealed that the IVS2 + 11 A allele of the H-PGDS gene was significantly transmitted preferentially to asthma-affected children (P = 0.0056), but no association was observed between −2C/T polymorphism of the PTGDR gene and asthma (P 〉 0.05).Conclusion Our results suggest that the IVS2 + 11 A/C allele may be involved in the development of asthma in the Japanese population.

    Notes: IL-4 gene cluster on chromosome 5 contains several candidate genes for atopy and asthma. Several independent studies have shown evidence for linkage between the markers flanking IL-4 gene cluster and asthma and/or asthma-related traits. Interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF-1) is located approximately 300 kb telomeric to IL-4 and recent study reveals that IRF-1 deficiency results in an elevated production of Th2-related cytokines and a compensatory decrease in the expression of native cell- and Th1-related cytokines.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉ObjectiveTo determine if there are any mutations associated with the development of atopy and asthma present in the coding exons and 5′ flanking region of the IRF-1 gene.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and resultsWe have screened the promoter and coding regions of the IRF-1 gene in atopic asthmatics and controls by SSCP method. We found three novel nuclear variants (the −300G/T and 4396 A/G polymorphisms and the 6355G 〉 A rare variant) in the IRF-1 gene. No variants causing amino acid alterations of IRF-1 were detected. The −300G/T polymorphism was in nearly complete linkage disequilibrium with the 4396 A/G polymorphism. An association between the 4396 A 〉 G polymorphism and atopy/asthma was examined by transmission disequilibrium test in 81 asthmatic families. Either of 4396 A or 4396G alleles was not significantly preferentially transmitted to atopy- or asthma-affected children.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionThe IRF-1 gene is less likely to play a substantial role in the development of atopy and asthma in the Japanese population.

    Notes: Movements of soft tissues surrounding the oral cavity, especially lips and cheeks, have a strong influence on mastication and phonetics. They also influence the relationship between a denture and its oral environment. The purpose of this study was to develop a three-dimensional measuring system for soft tissue movement. This system consisted of two video trackers placed stereographically and a computer. In addition, one video tracker was connected for measuring mandibular movements. The accuracy of this system was evaluated using computerized XYZ pulse stage. The resolution of this system was 0·10×0·10×0·10 mm, when the measurement was carried out in the area of the 24·0 (X)×20·0 (Y)×20·0 (Z) mm with a working distance of 500 mm and a frequency of 120 Hz. In the present study, the lip movements of a dentulous subject with mandibular movements during chewing peanuts were analysed using this system. The new system demonstrated its value for analysing soft tissue movement.

    Notes: Abstract Recently it has been reported that various traffic exhibit long‐range dependence and/or self‐similarity. However, there exist some reports which suggest that traffic may be non‐stationary. In this paper we discuss the average overflow probability JN L(Ly)≡E[N−1Σn=1 NI{Qn L〉Ly}] in a finite period [1,N] for a discrete‐time queue Qn L with a non‐stationary multiplexed input from L sources. By using the large deviation principle, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of JN L(Ly) as L increases and obtain an approximation formula of the form Jn L(Ly)≈C(L,y) e−γ(y). We apply the approximation formula to two examples. One is a non‐stationary process with deterministic level shifts and the other is a Gaussian process with spectrum of the form f−ν. The latter is non‐stationary if ν≥1.

    Notes: Abstract. We developed a gold reflector based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror that has a sufficiently high reflectivity and a broad bandwidth and has been used to initiate the mode locking in a Cr4+:YAG laser. The laser achieved a similar efficiency to the lasers with Bragg-reflector-based semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors, but delivered a much broader spectrum and a shorter pulse.

    Notes: Abstract Background. Many recent studies have found that several angiogenic factors play an important role in primary and metastatic tumor growth. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is known to induce angiogenesis. In this study, we investigated whether tumor PDGF can reliably predict metastatic potential and survival benefit in patients with breast cancer. Methods. Histoimmunological analysis with two isoforms of PDGF, PDGF-AA and PDGF-BB, was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. This analysis was performed in 83 patients with breast cancer; 30 with hematogenous recurrence, 13 with locoregional recurrence, and 40 surviving without recurrence. Results. Of the 30 patients with hematogenous recurrence, 13 (43.3%) showed PDGF-AA expression [PDGF-AA(+) group] and the remaining 17 (56.7%) showed no expres-sion of tumor PDGF-AA [PDGF-AA(−) group]. In the locoregional recurrence group, 1 patient (7.7%) showed PDGF-AA expression, and 2 of the 40 patients surviving without recurrence (5%) showed PDGF-AA expression in the primary tumor tissue. In contrast, PDGF-BB expression was observed in all 43 patients with recurrence and in 37 of the 40 patients surviving without recurrence. The PDGF-AA(+) and locoregional recurrence groups had almost the same period to recurrence after surgery (25.2 ± 18.5 months and 24.0 ± 11.3 months, respectively), whereas this period in the PDGF-AA(−) group was significantly longer (P 〈 0.0489 and P 〈 0.0400, respectively) than that of these other two groups. The 2-, 5-, and 8-year survival rates for the PDGF-AA(−) group were 70.6%, 47.1%, and 35.3%, respectively, whereas those for the PDGF-AA(+) group were 61.5%, 23.1%, and 15.4%, respectively; those for the locoregional recurrence group were 76.9%, 23.1%, and 7.7%, respectively. The survival rate for the PDGF-AA(−) group tended to be better (P = 0.0907) than that for the PDGF-AA(+) group, and showed no difference (P = 0.148) from that of the locoregional recurrence group. Conclusion. The data on PDGF-BB expression indicate that PDGF-BB is largely concerned with primary tumor growth and is not related to hematogenous metastasis. In contrast, PDGF-AA expression seems to be linked with hematogenous metastasis.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of leukocytes in the diseased kidneys is a hallmark of almost any kind of renal disease. Activated leukocytes are implicated in playing a crucial role in the pathogenesis of renal diseases. Recent investigations of the pathophysiological roles of chemokines and their cognate receptors have shed light on the detailed molecular mechanisms of leukocyte trafficking and activation in the diseased kidneys. This study summarizes findings that: (1) chemokine/chemokine receptor systems may be essentially involved in the pathogenesis of phase-specific renal disorders, (2) the measurement of urinary levels of chemokines may be clinically useful for monitoring different disease phases and activities in human renal diseases, and (3) interventions in chemokine/chemokine receptor systems may have potential as particular immunotherapeutic strategies to combat specific phases of renal diseases. Further investigations of anti-chemokine therapies for renal diseases will be required before clinical application is feasible.

    Notes: Abstract Background. The prognostic significance of c-erb B-2 in breast cancer remains controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the practical prognostic significance of c-erb B-2 protein status in breast cancer extracts, using an enzyme immunoassay. Methods. An enzyme immunoassay was used to measure levels of c-erb B-2 protein prospectively in 360 patients with breast cancer, using cytosol fractions prepared for steroid receptor assay. The status of c-erb B-2 protein was assessed using a cut-off value for positivity of 18 ng/mg protein. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. To evaluate the prognostic significance of c-erb B-2 protein status. Results. Levels of c-erb B-2 protein in tumor tissue extract ranged from 0 to 213.0 ng/mg protein (mean, 15.5 ng/mg protein). In 52 tumors (14.4 %) more than 18.0 ng/mg protein was detected, and these tumors were regarded as c-erb B-2 protein-positive. Correlations were found between c-erb B-2 protein positivity and large tumor size (〉3 cm; P = 0.0095), higher histological grade (P 〈 0.0001), estrogen receptor negativity (P 〈 0.0001), and progesterone receptor negativity (P 〈 0.0001). There was also a marginally significant correlation between c-erb B-2 protein positivity and lymph node positivity. Multivariate analysis showed that c-erb B-2 protein status was a significant independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival, being strongly significant in patients with positive lymph nodes. Conclusion. c-erb B-2-positive breast cancers are biologically more aggressive and c-erb B-2 protein status could be a candidate as a prognostic factor for patients with breast cancer, being particularly valuable in patients with positive lymph nodes.
