Notes: Abstract A new type absolute-humidity sensor with very quick response, very small power consumption and high sensitivity, which is based on the detection of the thermal conductivity change in humid air at heated temperature above 400°C, has been developed and demonstrated. Since this new type absolute-humidity sensor is able to be easily heated up above 400°C within 30–40 msec because of a micro-air-bridge heater structure, the surface of its sensing area is refreshed by burning out adsorbed dusts, oil, etc. Thermal conductivity λmix of mixed gas expressed by Sutherland-Wassiljewa equation is applied to the humid air to study this absolute humidity sensor. Only a single micro-air-bridge heater operation driven by double pulse-currents for this humidity sensor is also proposed.

Notes: Abstract The correlation between a releasable pituitary growth hormone (GH) pool and degree of growth failure was examined in 30 children with GH deficiency (group I) and 19 children with normal short stature (group II). Based on the responsiveness of GH to GH-releasing hormone (GHRH), group I, with low GH responses (below 7 ng/ml) to both insulin and arginine, was classified into three subgroups; Ia (peak value less than 10 ng/ml, n=19), Ib (10–20 ng/ml, n=5) and Ic (above 20 ng/ml, n=6). Group II, with a GH response above 10 ng/ml to either insulin or arginine, was also divided into IIa (below 20 ng/ml, n=5) and IIb (above 20 ng/ml, n=14). Body length and growth velocity in Ia and Ib were significantly reduced vs Ic; bone age in Ia was retarded vs Ic; plasma somatomedin C (Sm-C) levels in Ia and Ib were decreased vs Ic, who had almost normal levels (0.90±0.55 U/ml). The incidence of other combined pituitary hormone deficiencies and previous perinatal distress was definitely high in Ia and Ib, but zero in Ic. In group II also, body length and growth velocity were significantly decreased in IIa vs IIb (P〈0.01). These results indicate that [1] the pituitary reserve of GH estimated by GHRH is a good reflection of the degree of growth failure in GH-deficient children as well as in those of normal short stature, [2] hypothalamic GHRH deficiency tends to have a milder effect on growth retardation than pituitary GH deficiency, and [3] normal short children with a diminished GH reserve may be potential candidates for the GH treatment.

Notes: Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes capable of degrading collagens and other extracellular matrix components, have been implicated in gastric ulcer formation. However, the effect on MMP expression of Helicobacter pylori, also implicated in these lesions, has not been studied to our knowledge. Aim: To seek links between H. pylori and MMP expression likely to affect gastric ulcer formation. After fibroblasts from human gastric wall were cocultured with H. pylori, concentrations of MMP-1 and -2 in the medium were determined by enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assays. Results: Whereas MMP-1 was not detected in media from fibroblasts or H. pylori culture alone, MMP-1 was detected in cocultures (P 〈 0.01). Similar amounts of MMP-2 were detected in medium from fibroblasts cultured alone and with H. pylori. No MMP-2 production by H. pylori cultured alone was detected. Conclusions: MMP-1 appears to be important in gastric ulcer pathogenesis, and MMP-1 induction by H. pylori may impede gastric ulcer healing.

Notes: With the development of methods to crystallize proteins to sizes suitable for X-ray analysis, structures of many proteins have been determined to elucidate the relationships between their structures and functions. However, crystals of biological macromolecules have been frequently found to be twinned by adherence of two crystal lattices. Some crystals show splitting of diffraction spots owing to the different tilts of the two lattices. Others pretend to be single crystals with no split spots, and their symmetries of intensity distribution vary with every data set. These latter have been called hemihedral, and in them the unique axes of the two crystals are exactly reversely parallel with each other. The observed intensities were found to be detwinned by the least-squares method after Britton's algorithm [Britton (1972). Acta Cryst. A28, 296–297], when several sets of intensity data were observed. Fortran programs have been successfully used to determine the scale factors and degrees of twinning from the data of hydroxylamine oxidoreductase. The analysis of data collected at various positions of one crystal of this enzyme suggested a heterogeneous distribution of twinning in the crystal.

Notes: Abstract Background. Many recent studies have found that several angiogenic factors play an important role in primary and metastatic tumor growth. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is known to induce angiogenesis. In this study, we investigated whether tumor PDGF can reliably predict metastatic potential and survival benefit in patients with breast cancer. Methods. Histoimmunological analysis with two isoforms of PDGF, PDGF-AA and PDGF-BB, was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. This analysis was performed in 83 patients with breast cancer; 30 with hematogenous recurrence, 13 with locoregional recurrence, and 40 surviving without recurrence. Results. Of the 30 patients with hematogenous recurrence, 13 (43.3%) showed PDGF-AA expression [PDGF-AA(+) group] and the remaining 17 (56.7%) showed no expres-sion of tumor PDGF-AA [PDGF-AA(−) group]. In the locoregional recurrence group, 1 patient (7.7%) showed PDGF-AA expression, and 2 of the 40 patients surviving without recurrence (5%) showed PDGF-AA expression in the primary tumor tissue. In contrast, PDGF-BB expression was observed in all 43 patients with recurrence and in 37 of the 40 patients surviving without recurrence. The PDGF-AA(+) and locoregional recurrence groups had almost the same period to recurrence after surgery (25.2 ± 18.5 months and 24.0 ± 11.3 months, respectively), whereas this period in the PDGF-AA(−) group was significantly longer (P 〈 0.0489 and P 〈 0.0400, respectively) than that of these other two groups. The 2-, 5-, and 8-year survival rates for the PDGF-AA(−) group were 70.6%, 47.1%, and 35.3%, respectively, whereas those for the PDGF-AA(+) group were 61.5%, 23.1%, and 15.4%, respectively; those for the locoregional recurrence group were 76.9%, 23.1%, and 7.7%, respectively. The survival rate for the PDGF-AA(−) group tended to be better (P = 0.0907) than that for the PDGF-AA(+) group, and showed no difference (P = 0.148) from that of the locoregional recurrence group. Conclusion. The data on PDGF-BB expression indicate that PDGF-BB is largely concerned with primary tumor growth and is not related to hematogenous metastasis. In contrast, PDGF-AA expression seems to be linked with hematogenous metastasis.
