    Notes: Reactions with a heavy projectile incident on a light target can be used for the efficient in-flight production of secondary radioactive beams. An overview of this technique is given using data on 17F beams produced via the p(17O, 17F)n and d(16O, 17F)n reactions. With primary 16,17O beam currents of 100 pnA, intensities of up to 2×106 17F/s on target were achieved. Using this beam, the p(17F,α)14O reaction was measured. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Land-use history, recent management, and landscape position influence vegetation at the Rockefeller Experimental Tract (RET), a 40-year-old restoration experiment in northeast Kansas. RET is representative of the prairie-forest ecotone, containing native tallgrass prairie and oak-hickory forest, but unique in having tracts of replanted prairie, seeded in 1957, that have undergone long-term restoration treatments: burned, grazed, mowed, or untreated. A land-use history database for RET was compiled using a geographic information system to integrate historic and contemporary sources of information. Restoration management on the reseeded prairie has had a profound effect on forest development: mowing or burning precluded forest establishment (〈3% forest cover), whereas portions of untreated or grazed areas became heavily forested (〉97% forest cover). Forest colonization depends upon biotic and edaphic conditions at the time restoration was initiated: for areas replanted to prairie and managed by grazing, forestation was 6% on land in cultivation prior to replanting, 20% on former pastureland, and 98% on land deforested just before replanting. Patterns of forest colonization were also significantly associated with three landscape positions: near existing forest, along water courses, and along ridge tops. Additionally, land-use history analyses showed that the presence of various prairie and forest species resulted from persistence and not from colonization following restoration. Because of the lasting imprint of historic land use on the landscape, our results indicate that it is essential that restoration studies be evaluated within a site-specific historical context.

    Notes: Abstract Providing an anesthetic for patients undergoing heart or a single or double lung transplantation may represent a challenge even to the most experienced anesthesiologist. Patients with end-stage cardiac dysfunction have an impaired response to β-agonist due to receptor downregulation. These patient will have isolated left ventricular dysfunction secondary to ischemic heart disease or present with biventricular failure with or without significant pulmonary hypertension. Increasingly, more patients have undergone prior major cardiac procedures and are at risk for significant perioperative bleeding. Patients undergoing single or double lung are particularly challenging because most of these procedures are performed without the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass. The anesthesiologist must be proficient at the management of one-lung ventilation techniques and have a rational physiologic approach to the management of intraoperative hypoxemia and auto-PEEP.

    Notes: Remote detection of ultrasonic waves is shown experimentally by measuring the infrared (IR) radiation accompanying the adiabatic propagation of surface waves. The Rayleigh waves were excited by a pulsed Nd:yttrium–aluminum–garnet laser on the surface of a steel sample at temperatures up to 700 °C. The observed time-of-flight data of the Rayleigh waves correspond to values obtained by optical interferometry and the measured signal-to-noise ratio of (approximate)0.1 agrees with the estimated value using an IR detector with a sensitivity of D*=1.7×109 mm (square root of)Hz/W. Further improvements of IR detection may lead to a viable tool for laser ultrasonics. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The fate of disinfection byproducts during aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) is evaluated for aquifers in southern Nevada. Rapid declines of haloacetic acid (HAA) concentrations during ASR, with associated little change in Cl concentration, indicate that (HAAs) decline primarily by in situ microbial oxidation. Dilution is only a minor contributor to HAA concentration declines during ASR. Trihalomethane (THM) concentrations generally increased during storage of artificial recharge (AR) water and then declined during recovery. The decline of THM concentrations during recovery was primarily from dilution of current season AR water with residual AR water remaining in the aquifer from previous ASR seasons and native ground water. In more recent ASR seasons, for wells with the longest history of ASR, brominated THMs declined during storage and recovery by processes in addition to dilution. These conclusions about THMs are indicated by THM/Cl values and supported by a comparison of measured and model predicted THM concentrations. Geochemical mixing models were constructed using major-ion chemistry of the three end-member waters to calculate predicted THM concentrations. The decline in brominated THM concentrations in addition to that from dilution may result from biotransformation processes.

    Notes: State driver stress was measured in both low and high traffic congestion using cellular telephones. The contributions of time urgency, trait driver stress, and hassles were also examined. Drivers showed substantially more state driver stress under high than low congestion. Time urgency made a significant positive contribution to state driver stress at both congestion levels. Trait driver stress also contributed positively under low congestion. There was a significant hassles X trait stress interaction under high congestion. Hassles exposure moderately increased state driver stress for high trait stress drivers, but reduced state driver stress for medium and low trait stress drivers. These findings indicate that state driver stress is influenced by a combination of situational and personal factors, including factors external to the driving context.

    Notes: ‘d'Anjou’ pears (Pyrus communis, L.) harvested commercially with flesh firmness of 64.5 N were incapable of ripening normally at 20C within 60 days of air storage at -1C (denoted as “under-chilled” fruits). When under-chilled ‘d'Anjou’ fruits (8 fruits, total fruit weight of 1.8 kg) were packed in a 3.8-liter perforated bag inserted with an ethylene capsule, fruit would ripen normally at 20C. The ethylene concentration in the packed bag maintained no less than 100 ppm after 4 days at 20C, and declined to about 25 ppm on day 7. Regardless of the storage length, ripened fruit induced by the ethylene capsule developed high buttery and juicy texture. If ‘d’ Anjou’ fruit had been stored at -1C for less than 30 days, ripened fruit lacked high flavor quality. Flavor quality of ripened fruit improved rapidly when the fruit had been stored for longer than 30 days.

    Notes: Stable hydrogen-isotope values of ground water (δ2H) and dissolved hydrogen concentrations (H2(aq)) were quantified in a petroleum-hydrocarbon contaminated aquifer to determine whether the production/consumption of H2 by subsurface microorganisms affects ground water δ2H values. The range of δ2H observed in monitoring wells sampled (−27.8 %c to −15.5 %c) was best explained, however, by seasonal differences in recharge temperature as indicated using ground water δ18O values, rather than iso-topic exchange reactions involving the microbial cycling of H2 during anaerobic petroleum-hydrocarbon biodegradation. The absence of a measurable hydrogen-isotope exchange between microbialy cycled H2 and ground water reflects the fact that the amount of H2 available from the anaerobic decomposition of petroleum hydrocarbons is small relative to the amount of hydrogen present in water, even though milligram per liter concentrations of readily biodegradable contaminants are present at the study site. Additionally, isotopic fractionation calculations indicate that in order for H2 cycling processes to affect δ2H values of ground water, relatively high concentrations of H2 (〉0.080 M) would have to be maintained, considerably higher than the 0.2 to 26 nM present at this site and characteristic of anaerobic conditions in general. These observations suggest that the conventional approach of using δ2H and δ18O values to determine recharge history is appropriate even for those ground water systems characterized by anaerobic conditions and extensive microbial H2 cycling.
