Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: We examined the effects of aceclofenac and its metabolites on the production of pro-collagenase-1/pro-matrix metalloproteinase-1 (proMMP-1), pro-gelatinase A/proMMP-2, pro-stromelysin-1/proMMP-3 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) by rheumatoid synovial cells.¶Materials: Synovial cells were obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis.¶Treatment: Cultures of confluent cells were treated with interleukin-1β (IL-1β)(1 ng/ml) and/or test drugs (0.3-30 μM) for 48 h.¶Methods: Production of proMMPs and TIMP-1 was monitored by Western blotting or gelatin zymography. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was measured by an enzyme immunoassay.¶Results: 4′-Hydroxy aceclofenac, a major metabolite of aceclofenac, down-regulated both basal and IL-1β-induced production of proMMP-1 and proMMP-3 at a concentration sufficient to suppress PGE2 production without modulating proMMP-2 or TIMP-1, whereas aceclofenac itself had no marked effect on the production of proMMPs.¶Conclusions: Down-regulation of proMMP-1 and proMMP-3 production by 4′-hydroxy aceclofenac may contribute to the therapeutic effect of aceclofenac on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Notes: Abstract The effects of nonionic emulsifier on the formation of multihollow structures formed within sub-micron-sized polymer particles by the “acid/alkali method” proposed by the authors were examined. The original acid-swellable particles were produced by seeded emulsion terpolymerization of styrene, butyl acrylate, and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The results indicate that the nonionic emulsifier had a great effect on the formation of multihollow particles.

Notes: Abstract Under the expectation that the behavior of a spin glass (SG) system shows various aspects depending on the time- and space-scale of observations, we have studied the typical Ising spin glass Fe0.50Mn0.50TiO3 by measuring dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility, Mössbauer spectrum, neutron scattering intensity and μ+SR time spectrum. We have demonstrated that the application of various methods with different time- and space-scale of observations to the same system is useful to clarify the property of the spin glass freezing, the Ising character and the de Almeida and Thouless-line.

Notes: Abstract Fe x Ni1-x Cl2 is a mixed metal chloride and a random mixture with competing orthogonal spin anisotropies. In pure systems, Fe2+ shows a preferential spin inclination to the c-axis, while Ni2+ shows a weak spin anisotropy in the c-plane. Mössbauer spectra of the Fe x Ni1-x Cl2 system (0.034〈x〈0.079) observed below the Néel temperature (T N ) are composed of two types of sub-spectra: spectra I and II. We report the Mössbauer study of the magnetic behavior of different types of Fe2+ spins.
