Notizen: We present measurements of the modulation of the near absorption edge optical properties of single carrier diodes made from a soluble poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative. Pulsed electrical excitation was used to acquire the optical characteristics for average injected charge densities up to 1018 cm−3. For injected carrier densities below 5×1017 cm−3, the modulation of the optical properties are dominated by electroabsorption effects; at higher densities, the effects of the injected charge predominate. We find that there is no significant absorption by the injected charge below the optical absorption threshold and that there is substantial bleaching of the lowest energy optical transitions at high carrier density. These results imply that charge carrier absorption in this polymer does not limit the performance of organic light-emitting diodes and diode lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present experimental data, numerical simulations, and analytical transfer-matrix calculations for a two-dimensionally isotropic, left-handed metamaterial (LHM) at X-band microwave frequencies. A LHM is one that has a frequency band with simultaneously negative cursive-epsiloneff(ω) and μeff(ω), thereby having real values of index of refraction and wave vectors, and exhibiting extended wave propagation over that band. Our physical demonstration of a two-dimensional isotropic LHM will now permit experiments to verify some of the explicit predictions of reversed electromagnetic-wave properties including negative index of refraction as analyzed by Veselago [Usp. Fiz. Nauk 92, 517 (1964), Sov. Phys. Usp. 10, 509 (1968)]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: : Suspended sediment causes a range of environmental damage, including benthic smothering, irritation of fish gills, and transport of sorbed contaminants. Much of the impact, while sediment remains suspended, is related to its light attenuation, which reduces visual range in water and light availability for photosynthesis. Thus measurement of the optical attributes of suspended matter in many instances is more relevant than measurement of its mass concentration. Nephelometric turbidity, an index of light scattering by suspended particles, has been widely used as a simple, cheap, instrumental surrogate for suspended sediment, that also relates more directly than mass concentration to optical effects of suspended matter. However, turbidity is only a relative measure of scattering (versus arbitrary standards) that has no intrinsic environmental relevance until calibrated to a ‘proper’ scientific quantity. Visual clarity (measured as Secchi or black disc visibility) is a preferred optical quantity with immediate environmental relevance to aesthetics, contact recreation, and fish habitat. Contrary to common perception, visual clarity measurement is not particularly subjective and is more precise than turbidity measurement. Black disc visibility is inter-convertible with beam attenuation, a fundamental optical quantity that can be monitored continuously by beam transmissometry. Visual clarity or beam attenuation should supplant nephelometric turbidity in many water quality applications, including environmental standards.

Notizen: Although social scientists have written much recently about environmentalism, feminism, and gender, insufficient systematic examination of their interrelations has been done. The lack of adequate research on links among these three concepts limits their usefulness for both grassroots mobilization efforts and general theory development. The present exploratory study surveys a college student sample (N = 393) clarifying the relationships between liberal environmentalism, gender, and feminism. Relationship between feminism and attitudes toward human use of the environment and between gender and environmental regulation are found suppressed by a relationship between feminism and environmentalism. Although tentative, these findings suggest new directions for the study of ecofeminism.

Notizen: The high cost of cholesterol used in aquaculture diets for shrimp makes it important to precisely define their requirement for this essential nutrient in order to avoid excess supplementation of the diet. Two experiments were carried out to determine the cholesterol requirement of subadult (about 3 g) Penaeus monodon (Fabricius). The growth response and survival of shrimp were compared following feeding for up to 8 weeks with diets in which the cholesterol content varied between 0.7 and 8.5 g kg−1. Feed intake was quantified and the retention of ingested cholesterol determined by whole body analysis. The cholesterol requirement of subadult P. monodon was found to be about 75 mg kg−1 body weight d−1. The optimum dietary cholesterol content was approximately 1.7 g kg−1 (dry matter), which is appreciably lower than the current recommendation of 2.5–4 g kg−1. In most practical shrimp diets, the endogenous cholesterol in the ingredients provides more than 1.7 g kg−1 of cholesterol. Hence, our research suggests that it may be unnecessary to add expensive, supplementary cholesterol to commercial shrimp diets.

Notizen: Arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NATs; E.C 2.3.1.5) N-acetylate arylhydralazine and arylamine substrates using acetyl coenzyme A. Human NAT2 acetylates and inactivates the antituberculosis drug, isoniazid (INH), and is polymorphic. We previously demonstrated that there is a homologue of human NAT2 in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, whose product N-acetylates INH in vitro. We now demonstrate that the nat gene is expressed in M. tuberculosis and M. bovis Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG), using reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. The NAT protein is active in M. bovis BCG in vivo, as detected by the presence of N-acetyl INH in M. bovis BCG lysates grown in INH. Sequence analysis of the M. tuberculosis nat coding region reveals a single nucleotide polymorphism in 18% of a random cohort of M. tuberculosis clinical isolates, conferring a G to R change. The recombinant mutant protein appears less stable than the wild type, and has an apparent affinity for INH of 10-fold less than the wild type. Modelling the change in M. tuberculosis NAT shows that the G to R change is close to the active site, and supports the experimental findings. Minimum inhibitory concentration data suggest that this polymorphism in nat is linked to low-level changes in the INH susceptibility of M. tuberculosis clinical isolates.

Notizen: The purpose of this paper is to revisit the maximum tensile stress (MTS) criterion to predict brittle fracture for mixed mode conditions. Earlier experimental results for brittle fracture of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) using angled cracked plates are also re-examined. The role of the T-stress in brittle fracture for linear elastic materials is emphasized. The generalized MTS criterion is described in terms of mode I and II stress intensity factors, KI and KII and the T-stress (the stress parallel to the crack), and a fracture process zone, rc . The generalized MTS criterion is then compared with the earlier experimental results for PMMA subjected to mixed mode conditions. It is shown that brittle fracture can be controlled by a combination of singular stresses (characterized by K ) or non-singular stress (T-stress). The T-stress is also shown to have an influence on brittle fracture when the singular stress field is a result of mode II loading.

Notizen: : 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) has been associated with renal complications in inflammatory bowel disease. Renal function is typically monitored using serum creatinine; however, significant disease may predate increases in creatinine.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aims: To identify whether markers of early renal disease (urinary albumin, α-1-microglobulin [α-1-M] and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase [NAG], and serum cystatin C) are useful in the assessment of renal function in inflammatory bowel disease patients receiving 5-ASA.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: Twenty-one patients with a new diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease were investigated. Samples were taken at diagnosis, and at 3-monthly intervals after the commencement of 5-ASA, for 1 year.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: Mean creatinine clearance was 100 mL/min and did not change following treatment. Inflammatory bowel disease was not associated with albuminuria. Urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and α-1-microglobulin at diagnosis were increased in 10 (48%) and 11 (52%) patients, respectively: treatment was not associated with consistent changes in urinary protein excretion. There was a significant correlation between cystatin C and creatinine clearance both at diagnosis (r=–0.533, P=0.0275) and combining the initial and follow-up data (r=–0.601, P 〈 0.01), but not between creatinine and creatinine clearance (P 〉 0.05).〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: Tubular proteinuria is an extra-intestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease irrespective of 5-ASA treatment. Tubular proteins are not useful predictors of an adverse renal response to 5-ASA. Serum cystatin C may be an improved marker of glomerular filtration rate in this setting.
