Notizen: We have found substantial enhancements of the optical matrix elements of Er atoms when water molecules augment the symmetry-breaking electric fields in their crystalline environment. We measure enhancement factors of order 5 for the set of Er energy levels with wavelengths near 1550 nm. These transitions are technologically important because they are used in optical amplifiers for communications. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The three-dimensional magnetic structure and reversal mechanism of patterned Co/Pt multilayers, were imaged using complementary Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (in-plane component) and magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy (perpendicular magnetization). The Co/Pt films with perpendicular anisotropy were patterned by ion irradiation through a stencil mask to produce in-plane magnetization in the irradiated regions. The boundaries of the patterns, defined by the transition from out-of-plane to in-plane magnetization, were found to be determined by the stencil mask. The nucleation fields were substantially reduced to 50 Oe for the in-plane regions and 1 kOe for the perpendicular regions, comparing to 4.5 kOe for the as-grown film. The perpendicular reversals were found to always originate at the pattern boundaries. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Insects, including Drosophila, readily respond to toxins such as phytotoxins, metal ions, and insecticides in their environment by evolving resistance. Although Drosophila are seldom targets for insecticides, nevertheless populations worldwide have evolved resistance to a variety of insecticides, and these resistance alleles persist in high frequency. In many cases, Drosophila use the same genetic and biochemical mechanisms that underlie resistance in pest insects, including single-site changes in target molecules resulting from point mutations and upregulation of degradative enzymes, particularly cytochrome P450 enzymes and glutathione S-transferases. However, several types of resistance found in pest insects, such as gene amplification and knock-down resistance, have not been reported in Drosophila field populations. Excellent Drosophila-plant models are being studied to understand the adaptation to phytotoxins; P450 enzymes are clearly involved in phytotoxin resistance in one of these models. The genetic advantages of D. melanogaster, including availability of the sequenced genome, should allow further study of these genes and identification of new ones, particularly regulatory genes, responsible for resistance.

Notizen: Falling ball rheometry measurements of the apparent relative viscosity of suspensions of randomly oriented rodlike particles are reported for rods having a wide range of aspect ratios and concentrations. These data, combined with those from earlier studies [Milliken et al., J. Fluid Mech. 202, 217 (1989); Powell et al., J. Rheology 33, 1173 (1989)], provide a master curve describing the apparent viscosity in terms of a single parameter, nL3, where L is the length of the particle and n is the number density. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Describes an approach to the processing and presentation of online full-text journals that utilizes several evolving information technologies, including extensible markup language (XML) and extensible stylesheet language transformations (XSLT). Discusses major issues and trade-offs associated with these technologies, and also specific lessons learned from our use of these technologies in the Illinois Testbed of full-text journal articles. Focuses especially on issues associated with the representation of documents in XML, techniques to create and normalize metadata describing XML document instances, XSLT features employed in the Illinois Testbed, and trade-offs of different XSLT implementation options. Pays special attention to techniques for transforming between XML and HTML formats for rendering in today's commercial Web browsers.

Notizen: This article outlines a process, whereby public research efforts can be joined with private sector product needs creating a commercialization culture that can help provide opportunities and address the barriers of new product concepts for the marketplace. The issues discussed here were identified through research efforts that explored the opportunity to align academic research with private sector commercialization efforts. The purpose is to identify academic and private sector linkages that may benefit and enhance new product research efforts with the goal of moving faculty-driven product research from inception to marketplace commercialization. The end result is a process by which public sector (institutions of higher education) and private sector organizations can interact to develop new products for the commercial marketplace that will meet the burgeoning product needs of current and future customers.

Notizen: Plasmodiophora brassicae is an obligate biotroph that causes clubroot, one of the most damaging diseases of crucifers. Differential cultivars and random amplified polymorphic DNA markers were used to assess the extent of genetic diversity among nine single-gall populations of P. brassicae and 37 single-spore isolates (SSI) derived from four of those field samples. Isolates were classified into eight pathotypes, and each isolate was associated with a unique molecular genotype. Virulence and DNA polymorphisms were detected within and between field isolates, and among SSIs from different pathotypes, hosts and geographical origins. The relatively high level of genetic diversity among field isolates was similar to that among SSIs derived from a single-club field isolate. Molecular and pathogenicity-based classifications were not clearly correlated, but isolates belonging to pathotype P1 were clustered. Two RAPD markers were specific to pathotype P1. The finding that genetic differences can occur in P. brassicae field isolates will be an important consideration in resistance genetic studies and in choosing breeding strategies to develop durable clubroot resistance.

Notizen: [Auszug] Many biological signaling pathways involve autocrine ligand–receptor loops; misregulation of these signaling loops can contribute to cancer phenotypes. Here we present an algorithm for detecting such loops from gene expression profiles. Our method is based on the hypothesis that for some ...
