    Notes: : Recent regulations require impact statements for major water development projects, including reservoirs that will be used for water supply, recreation, and pollution control. A water quantity/quality model was developed and used for making water quality projections of a proposed reservoir in Montgomery County, Maryland. The study area is uncommon in that there is an extensive water quality data base. The results indicate that land use changes will have a significant effect on water quality and that the proposed reservoir will improve the quality of the surface waters downstream from the reservoir. A major effect of land use changes is the increase in the variability of water quality.

    Notes: This study focuses on the development of a noninvasive, in-line rheometer using ultrasonics and its comparison with data from a traditional capillary viscometer. The ultrasonic based pointwise viscosity measurement technique combines a measurement of the velocity profile and the pressure drop to determine the shear rate and the shear stress distributions, respectively in a pipe. The experiments were carried out using tomato concentrates at 8.75%, 12.75%, and 17.10% total solids content. The flow system consisted of a 53.2 mm diameter acrylic tube, a positive displacement pump and two pressure transducers. Multiple shear viscosity-shear rate data were recorded under actual pipeline conditions from a single combined measurement of the velocity profiles using ultrasonics and the pressure gradient, using the pressure transducers. The samples showed shear thinning behavior and a yield stress. Power law and Casson models were used to fit the data and both obtained R2 values higher than 0.99. The yield stress was also directly determined from the velocity profiles. Shear viscosity versus shear rate data of the 12.75% total solids sample were obtained by capillary rheometry at four different flow rates. These showed very-good agreement with those obtained using the velocity profile technique.

    Notes: The Helical Screw Rheometer (HSR) is being evaluated for rheological measurements of fluid food suspensions. the HSR consists of a helical screw enclosed in a tight fitting cylinder. With a closed system the inner screw is rotated creating a linearly increasing pressure differential along the axis of the screw, which is proportional to the viscosity of the fluid. This paper presents theoretical one- and two-dimensional flow analyses for Newtonian fluids using both rectangular and cylindrical coordinates. For non-Newtonian fluids a one-dimensional rectangular analysis was developed using the power law model.

    Notes: We review the fluid mechanics and rheology of dense suspensions, emphasizing investigations of microstructure and total stress. "Dense" or "highly concentrated" suspensions are those in which the average particle separation distance is less than the particle radius. For these suspensions, multiple-body interactions as well as two-body lubrication play a significant role and the rheology is non-Newtonian. We include investigations of multimodal suspensions, but not those of suspensions with dominant nonhydrodynamic interactions. We consider results from both physical experiments and computer simulations and explore scaling theories and the development of constitutive equations.

    Notes: The viscosity of a monolayer of a suspension of bimodally distributed hard spheres is determined for area fractions, φa, from 0.15 to 0.74 with different particle size ratios, λ (diameter of large sphere/diameter of small spheres=1, 2, and 4), and different fractions of small spheres of total solids, ξ (0.07, 0.27, 0.49, 0.64, and 0.83). Particle distributions are generated by a Monte Carlo technique and the hydrodynamic interactions are calculated by Stokesian dynamics. These results, which correspond to the high-frequency dynamic viscosities, are compared with those from the dynamic simulation of hydrodynamically interacting spherical particles [Chang and Powell, J. Fluid Mech. 253, 1 (1993)]. Dynamic simulation is found to yield higher relative viscosities, ηr, as compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulation at high concentrations. This results from the absence of long clusters that completely cross a periodic cell in the Monte Carlo simulations that are present in the dynamic simulations. When φa is normalized by the maximum packing fraction, φm2-D, all the viscosity data fall onto a master curve. This is the same trend as that found in dynamic simulations, except that the Monte Carlo simulation gives lower relative viscosities for φa/φm2-D (approximately-greater-than) 0.3. When λ and φa are fixed, ηr decreases as ξ increases from zero, reaches a minimum, and then increases as ξ→1, similar to the trend found in the dynamic simulations. Good agreement is found among the results of two-dimensional simulations, experiments, and three-dimensional simulations for monodispersed suspensions.

    Notes: Batch sedimentation experiments were conducted with suspensions of noncolloidal spherical particles. Using nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI), the time evolution of the volume fraction versus height profile was measured for initial suspension volume fractions, φi, ranging from 0.08 to 0.44. NMRI clearly delineates the clear fluid layer at the top of the suspension, below which there is a transition to a region having the initial mean particle concentration. The hindered settling function determined from these data corresponds well with previous results. The spreading of the interface in excess of that expected from the combined effects of polydispersity and self-sharpening was analyzed as a diffusion process. The measured values of the self-induced hydrodynamic diffusivity agreed with those reported previously, and they decreased sharply for φi(approximately-greater-than)0.15. The concentration profile was also measured through the fan region into the sediment, where the volume fraction is near maximum packing, and determined the fan thickness as a function of time. The fan thickness is found to increase as the initial suspension volume fraction is increased. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
