    Notes: The growth and properties of luminescent ZnGa2O4 thin films using pulsed laser ablation has been investigated. As-deposited films on glass and (100) MgO substrates exhibit blue-white photoluminescence with a broad emission band under ultraviolet excitation. In situ epitaxial films obtained on single crystal (100) MgO substrates possess enhanced luminescent intensity as compared to polycrystalline films on glass substrates. The enhanced luminescence in epitaxial films presumably reflects lower defect densities due to growth on low energy surfaces. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Bimetallic alloys have been considered in terms of their wetting behavior on semiconducting BaTiO3. In an earlier study, wetting behavior was strongly linked to ohmic contact behavior. However, the wetting behavior does not always correlate in the form of high work of adhesion-low contact resistance. The departure from this trend is associated with the nature of the segregation of the solute. Two extreme cases are considered in this study: no driving force for segregation and a strong driving force. These cases are characterized with sessile drop experiments and qualitatively analyzed in terms of thermodynamic analysis, both a surface enrichment model is considered together with an energy diagram approach. Both models give excellent qualitative agreement to the observed wetting behavior of the bimetallic alloy-BaTiO3 system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper provides a theory of private politics in which an activist seeks to change the production practices of a firm for the purpose of redistribution to those whose interests it supports. The source of the activist's influence is the possibility of support for its cause by the public. The paper also addresses the issue of corporate social responsibility by distinguishing among corporate redistribution as motivated by profit maximization, altruism, and threats by the activist. Private politics and corporate social responsibility not only have a direct effect on the costs of the firm, but also have a strategic effect by altering the competitive positions affirms in an industry. From an integrated-strategy perspective the paper investigates the strategic implications of private politics and corporate social responsibility for the strategies of rival firms when one or both are targets of an activist campaign. Implications for empirical analysis are derived from the theory.

    Notes: Chronic cocaine use elicits changes in the pattern of gene expression within reinforcement-related, dopaminergic regions. cDNA hybridization arrays were used to illuminate cocaine-regulated genes in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) of non-human primates (Macaca fascicularis; cynomolgus macaque), treated daily with escalating doses of cocaine over one year. Changes seen in mRNA levels by hybridization array analysis were confirmed at the level of protein (via specific immunoblots). Significantly up-regulated genes included: protein kinase A α catalytic subunit (PKAcα); cell adhesion tyrosine kinase beta (PYK2); mitogen activated protein kinase kinase 1 (MEK1); and β-catenin. While some of these changes exist in previously described cocaine-responsive models, others are novel to any model of cocaine use. All of these adaptive responses coexist within a signaling scheme that could account for known inductions of genes(e.g. fos and jun proteins, and cyclic AMP response element binding protein) previously shown to be relevant to cocaine's behavioral actions. The complete data set from this experiment has been posted to the newly created Drug and Alcohol Abuse Array Data Consortium () for mining by the general research community.

    Notes: Seizure-induced neuronal death may be under the control of the caspase family of cell death proteases. We examined the role of caspase-2 in a model of focally evoked limbic seizures with continuous EEG recording. Seizures were elicited by microinjection of kainic acid into the amygdala of the rat and terminated after 40 min by diazepam. Caspase-2 was constitutively present in brain, mostly within neurons, and was detected in both cytoplasm and nucleus. Cleaved caspase-2 (12 kDa) was detected immediately following seizure termination within injured ipsilateral hippocampus, contiguous with increased Val-Asp-Val-Ala-Asp (VDVADase) activity, a putative measure of activated caspase-2. Expression of receptor interacting protein (RIP)-associated Ich-1-homologous protein with death domain (RAIDD) was increased following seizures, whereas expression of RIP and tumor necrosis factor receptor associated protein with death domain (TRADD), other components thought to be linked to the caspase-2 activation and signaling mechanism, were unchanged. Intracerebroventricular administration of z-VDVAD-fluoromethyl ketone blocked seizure-induced caspase-2 activity but did not alter caspase-8 activity and failed to affect DNA fragmentation or neuronal death. These data support activation of caspase-2 following seizures but suggest that parallel caspase pathways may circumvent deficits in caspase-2 function to complete the cell death process.

    Notes: Data from a large-scale canal-drawdown test were used to estimate the specific yield (s) of the Biscayne Aquifer, an uncon-fined limestone aquifer in southeast Florida. The drawdown test involved dropping the water level in a canal by about 30 cm and monitoring the response of hydraulic head in the surrounding aquifer. Specific yield was determined by analyzing data from the unsteady portion of the drawdown test using an analytical stream-aquifer interaction model (Zlotnik and Huang 1999). Specific yield values computed from drawdown at individual piezometers ranged from 0.050 to 0.57, most likely indicating heterogeneity of specific yield within the aquifer (small-scale variation in hydraulic conductivity may also have contributed to the differences in sy among piezometers). A value of 0.15 (our best estimate) was computed based on all drawdown data from all piezometers.We incorporated our best estimate of specific yield into a large-scale two-dimensional numerical MODFLOW-based ground water flow model and made predictions of head during a 183–day period at four wells located 337 to 2546 m from the canal. We found good agreement between observed and predicted heads, indicating our estimate of specific yield is representative of the large portion of the Biscayne Aquifer studied here. This work represents a practical and novel approach to the determination of a key hydrogeological parameter (the storage parameter needed for simulation and calculation of transient unconfined ground water flow), at a large spatial scale (a common scale for water resource modeling), for a highly transmissive limestone aquifer (in which execution of a traditional pump test would be impractical and would likely yield ambiguous results). Accurate estimates of specific yield and other hydrogeological parameters are critical for management of water supply, Everglades environmental restoration, flood control, and other issues related to the ground water hydrology of the Biscayne Aquifer.

    Notes: Trace metal clean sampling and analysis techniques were used to examine the temporal patterns of Hg, Cu, and Zn concentrations in shallow ground water, and the relationships between metal concentrations in ground water and in a hydrologically connected river. Hg, Cu, and Zn concentrations in ground water ranged from 0.07 to 4.6 ng L−1, 0.07 to 3.10 μg L−1, and 0.17 to 2.18 μg L−1, respectively. There was no apparent seasonal pattern in any of the metal concentrations. Filtrable Hg, Cu, and Zn concentrations in the North Branch of the Milwaukee River ranged from below the detection limit to 2.65 ng Hg L−1,0.51 to 4.30 μg Cu L−1, and 0.34 to 2.33 μg Zn L−1. Thus, metal concentrations in ground water were sufficiently high to account for a substantial fraction of the filtrable trace metal concentration in the river. Metal concentrations in the soil ranged from 8 to 86 ng Hg g−1, 10 to 39 μg Cu g−1, and 15 to 84 μg Zn g−1. Distribution coefficients, KD, in the aquifer were 7900,22,000, and 23,000 L kg−1 for Hg, Cu, and Zn, respectively. These values were three to 40 times smaller than KD values observed in the Milwaukee River for suspended particulate matter.
