    Description: Several non-invasive methods are common practice in natural sciences today. Here we present how they can be applied and contribute to current topics in cephalopod (paleo-) biology. Different methods will be compared in terms of time necessary to acquire the data, amount of data, accuracy/resolution, minimum/maximum size of objects that can be studied, the degree of post-processing needed and availability. The main application of the methods is seen in morphometry and volumetry of cephalopod shells. In particular we present a method for precise buoyancy calculation. Therefore, cephalopod shells were scanned together with different reference bodies, an approach developed in medical sciences. It is necessary to know the volume of the reference bodies, which should have similar absorption properties like the object of interest. Exact volumes can be obtained from surface scanning. Depending on the dimensions of the study object different computed tomography techniques were applied.

    Notes: Strontium hexaferrite nanoparticles have been successfully prepared from a sintered SrFe12O19 target, using pulsed excimer laser ablation and cold condensation technique. The as-condensed powders do not exhibit the same magnetic properties as the target material. However, annealing at a high temperature of 850 °C for 3 h in air followed by fast cooling yields very high coercivity of 6665 Oe, exhibiting presence of single domain particles. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques are used to study the magnetism, microstructure, and phase formation in the powders, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of salbutamol (S) on cycling performance was examined in 15 highly trained non-asthmatic male cyclists. A double-blind, randomized cross-over design was used with S or placebo (P) administered using a metered-dose inhaler and a spacer device 20 min before each testing session. The S dose was 400 μg (four puffs), which is twice the normal therapeutic level. Subjects were habituated to all the laboratory procedures in the week prior to actual data collection. The subjects performed four tests under S and P conditions on separate days over 2 weeks. These included measurement of maximal O2 uptake $$(\dot VO_{2max} )$$ (cycle ergometry) with assessment of pulmonary function before and after, a submaximal (90% of ventilatory threshold) square-wave work transition from a base of unloaded cycling, a 60-s modified Wingate test, and a simulated 20 km time trial. No significant differences were observed in any of the dependent variables related to aerobic endurance or cycling performance between the S and P conditions. These results support other findings that an acute dose (400 μg) of S has no performance-enhancing properties.

    Notes: Vertical stacking of organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) that emit the three primary colors is shown to be a means for achieving efficient and bright full-color displays. In Paper I, we addressed stacked OLED (SOLED) design and fabrication principles to optimize emission colors, operating voltage, and efficiency. Here, we present results on two different (metal-containing and metal-free cathode) SOLED structures that exhibit performance suitable for many full-color display applications. The operating voltages at 10 mA/cm2 (corresponding to video display brightnesses) are 6.8, 8.5, and 12.1 V for the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) elements of the metal-containing SOLED, respectively. The respective subpixel luminous efficiencies are 0.53, 1.44, and 1.52 cd/A, and the Commission Internationale de L'Éclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are (0.72, 0.28), (0.42, 0.56), and (0.20, 0.22). In the high transparency metal-free SOLED, an insulating layer was inserted between the two upper subpixels to allow for independent grounding of all color emitters in the stack. At operating voltages of 12–14 V, video display brightnesses were achieved with luminous efficiencies of 0.35, 1.36, and 1.05 cd/A for the R, G, and B subpixels, respectively. The respective CIE coordinates for R, G, and B emissions are (0.72, 0.28), (0.26, 0.63), and (0.17, 0.28) in the normal viewing direction, shifting inperceptibly as the viewing angle is increased to as large as 60°. Finally, we discuss addressing schemes of SOLED displays, and compare them with other strategies for achieving full-color, OLED-based displays. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The need to grow high quality semiconducting hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) thin films to allow n-type electronic doping by nitrogenation has lead us to deposit films with low paramagnetic defect density (1017 cm−3). The films were grown on the earthed electrode of a radio frequency driven plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system using methane, helium and a range of nitrogen concentrations as the precursor gases. The deposited films are shown to be polymer like. Changes in the chemical structure and relative bond fractions as a function of the nitrogen flow rate into the plasma chamber and ex situ annealing are reported. Particular attention is paid to changes in the film structure after annealing at 100 °C, since an increase in the E04 optical band gap is observed as a function of nitrogen flow after the anneal. This suggests a decrease in the defect density of the film. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The use of copper-doped beryllium ablators on National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)] targets, in place of plastic, can require the bonding together of hemispheres with a joint of differing composition. Indirect drive experiments have been conducted on the Nova laser [J. L. Emmet, W. F. Krupke, and J. B. Trenholme, Sov. J. Quantum Electron. 13, 1 (1983)], and the resulting shock structuring compared with code simulations. It is concluded that one of the available codes, the RAGE code [R. M. Baltrusaitis et al., Phys. Fluids 8, 2471 (1996)] provides useful insight into the effect of joints. This code is then employed to obtain a physical picture of the shock front nonuniformity in terms of a secondary rarefaction and an oblique shock interacting with the main shock that propagates in the absence of the joint. A simple analysis reinforces this picture.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: For a given nonintegrable toroidal magnetic field, a nearby integrable magnetic field is constructed from quadratic-flux minimizing surfaces. A new mathematical definition and derivation of quadratic-flux minimizing surfaces, which directly exploits the analogy between toroidal magnetic fields and 1〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12 degree of freedom Hamiltonian systems, is given. The width and phase of magnetic islands (calculated from the shear of the integrable field and the magnitude and phase of the perturbation harmonics) are in excellent agreement with detailed Poincaré plots. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ion interpenetration, stagnation, and energization processes are studied in colliding laser-produced plasma configurations relevant to Trident [R. G. Watt, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 64, 1770 (1993)] experiments using four different numerical methods: one-dimensional Monte Carlo and Lagrangian multifluid codes, and one- and two-dimensional hybrid (particle ions, fluid electrons) and single-fluid Lagrangian codes. Results from the four methodologies are compared for plasmas generated with gold and deuterated polyethylene (CD2) targets. Overall, the various codes give similar results concerning the initial expansion of the plasmas and their collisional interaction, the degree of stagnation, stagnation time, and amount of ion thermalization for gold targets, while multispecies techniques indicate a much softer stagnation for CD2 plasmas than the single-fluid model. Variations in the results of the calculations due to somewhat different initializations and parameters, as well as to different physics in the codes, are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper describes Rossby waves propagating along a channel with a discontinuity in potential vorticity. A finite-amplitude, long-wave equation giving the displacement of the material interface separating two constant vorticity regions is derived and solved for both steady and unsteady finite-amplitude waves. Finite-amplitude Rossby waves that propagate in the opposite direction to infinitesimal waves are identified, and the mechanism for these waves is elucidated. The full parameter space of possible flows is described quantitatively. The weakly nonlinear limit of this finite-amplitude equation is also presented, including the novel case of kink solitons in an equation with only quadratic nonlinearity. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
