    Notes: The use of copper-doped beryllium ablators on National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)] targets, in place of plastic, can require the bonding together of hemispheres with a joint of differing composition. Indirect drive experiments have been conducted on the Nova laser [J. L. Emmet, W. F. Krupke, and J. B. Trenholme, Sov. J. Quantum Electron. 13, 1 (1983)], and the resulting shock structuring compared with code simulations. It is concluded that one of the available codes, the RAGE code [R. M. Baltrusaitis et al., Phys. Fluids 8, 2471 (1996)] provides useful insight into the effect of joints. This code is then employed to obtain a physical picture of the shock front nonuniformity in terms of a secondary rarefaction and an oblique shock interacting with the main shock that propagates in the absence of the joint. A simple analysis reinforces this picture.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The primary TFTR neutron source strength measurement system consists of seven fission detectors previously calibrated with D–D and D–T neutron generators and a 252Cf neutron source inside the TFTR vacuum vessel. A recalibration became desirable because of the addition of major components to the tokamak. The new calibration with the D–D neutron generator in situ is consistent with the detection efficiencies measured in the previous calibrations, within the uncertainties. Effects of the anisotropic emission of the neutron generator, due both to the variation of the differential D–D yield with angle (similar to that from beam–target and beam–beam reactions in the beam-driven TFTR plasma) and to scattering and absorption by the generator heads have been observed.

    Notes: Nuclear reactions in silicon semiconductor detectors with an energy threshold above 2.5 MeV can be used to measure dt neutrons in a high background of low-energy dd neutrons. This allows the measurement of 14-MeV neutrons from the d(t, n)α reaction in deuterium plasmas, where the tritons from the d(d, t)p reaction create 14-MeV neutrons due to burnup. Measurements with a surface barrier detector are presented together with the calibration of such a detector to measure the absolute 14-MeV neutron source strength.

    Notes: A 3He ionization chamber was used to measure neutron spectra on TFTR during 1987. The ion temperature was deduced for one set of Ohmically heated plasmas and agreed within 20% with that measured by other diagnostics. The absolute efficiency was calibrated using a d–d neutron generator.

    Notes: It is shown that regions of enhanced pressure have been produced in targets with indirect radiation drive in planar and cylindrically convergent geometry through the interaction between the flows caused by target inhomogeneities and the main target drive. Design calculations for National Ignition Facility (NIF) [J. A. Paisner et al., Laser Focus World 30, 75 (1994)] targets with beryllium ablators formed by bonded hemi-shells [D. C. Wilson et al., Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 43, 1667 (1998)] indicate that related behavior produces a seed perturbation in the ablator which can in some cases lead to the suppression of ignition. From simulation and analysis of the NIF problem in the planar geometry analog, a scaling for the perturbation, which should be useful for validation of the behavior with lower energy drive and smaller-scale geometries, is derived. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Exact analytic solutions for steady-state magnetized plasma flow (MPF) using ideal magnetohydrodynamics formalism are presented. Several cases are considered. When plasma flow is included, a finite plasma pressure gradient ∇p can be maintained in a force-free state J×B=0 by the velocity gradient. Both incompressible and compressible MPF examples are discussed for a Taylor-state spheromak B field. A new magnetized nozzle solution is given for compressible plasma when U(parallel)B. Transition from a magnetized nozzle to a magnetic nozzle is possible when the B field is strong enough. No physical nozzle would be needed in the magnetic nozzle case. Diverging-, drum- and nozzle-shaped MPF solutions when U⊥B are also given. The electric field is needed to balance the U×B term in Ohm's law. The electric field can be generated in the laboratory with the proposed conducting electrodes. If such electric fields also exist in stars and galaxies, such as through a dynamo process, then these solutions can be candidates to explain single and double jets.

    Notes: Direct-drive cylindrical-implosion experiments are performed to study perturbed hydrodynamic flows in convergent geometry. Two experimental campaigns have been conducted, to demonstrate the advantages of direct over indirect drive and to validate numerical simulations of zeroth-order hydrodynamics and single-mode perturbation growth. Results and analysis of three unperturbed-target shots and two perturbed-target shots are discussed in detail. For unperturbed-target implosions, positions of inner and outer shell edges agree between simulation and experiment during the laser pulse. However, observed shell thickness is greater than simulated in unperturbed targets during deceleration and rebound; the effect appears only at the shell's exterior edge. For perturbed-target implosions, growth factors ∼10–14 are observed, whereas growth factors near 30 are expected from simulation. Rayleigh–Taylor growth appears to differ between simulation and experiment. Observed zeroth-order flow at the exterior edge of imploding, perturbed targets appears to differ from simulation, even during acceleration. A possible physical model to explain such apparent differences is identified. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Current plans for time-dependent control of flux asymmetry in the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, J. D. Boyes, S. A. Kumpan, and M. Sorem, "The National Ignition Facility Project," ICF Quart. 5, 110 (1995)] hohlraums rely on multiple beam cones with different laser power temporal profiles in each cone. Experiments with multiple beam cones have begun on the Omega laser facility [T. R. Boehly et al., Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)] at the University of Rochester. In addition to allowing symmetry experiments similar to those performed on Nova [A. Hauer et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 66, 672 (1995)], the Omega facility allows multiple beam cones to be moved independently to confirm our ability to model the resulting implosion image shapes. Results indicate that hohlraum symmetry behaves similarly with multiple rings of beams as with a single ring, but with the weighted beam spot position used to parametrize the beam pointing.

    Notes: The Rayleigh–Taylor instability is an important limitation in inertial confinement fusion capsule designs. Significant work both theoretically and experimentally has been done to demonstrate the stabilizing effects of material flow through the unstable region. The experimental verification has been done predominantly in planar geometry. Convergent geometry introduces effects not present in planar geometry such as shell thickening and accelerationless growth of modal amplitudes (e.g., Bell–Plesset growth). Amplitude thresholds for the nonlinear regime are reduced, since the wavelength λ of a mode m decreases with convergence λ∼R/m, where R is the radius. Convergent effects have been investigated using an imploding cylinder driven by x-ray ablation on the NOVA laser [J. L. Emmet, W. F. Krupke, and J. B. Trenholme, Sov. J. Quantum Electron. 13, 1 (1983)]. By doping sections of the cylinder with opaque materials, in conjunction with x-ray backlighting, the growth and feedthrough of the perturbations from the ablation front to the inner surface of the cylinder for various initial modes and amplitudes from early time through stagnation was measured. Mode coupling of illumination asymmetries with material perturbations is observed, as well as phase reversal of the perturbations from near the ablation front to the inner surface of the cylinder. Perturbation growth is observed due to convergence and compressibility alone, without the effects of acceleration, and scales as ∼1/ρR, where ρ is the mass density. Imaging is performed with an x-ray pinhole camera coupled to a gated microchannel plate detector.

    Notes: The confinement and heating of supershot plasmas are significantly enhanced with tritium beam injection relative to deuterium injection in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 26, 11 (1984)]. The global energy confinement and local thermal transport are analyzed for deuterium and tritium fueled plasmas to quantify their dependence on the average mass of the hydrogenic ions. Radial profiles of the deuterium and tritium densities are determined from the D–T fusion neutron emission profile. The inferred scalings with average isotopic mass are quite strong, with τE∝〈A〉0.85±0.20, τEthermal∝〈A〉0.89±0.20, χitot∝〈A〉−2.6±0.5, and De∝〈A〉−1.4±0.2 at fixed Pinj. For fixed local plasma parameters χitot∝〈A〉−1.8±0.4 is obtained. The quoted 2σ uncertainties include contributions from both diagnostic errors and shot irreproducibility, and are conservatively constructed to attribute the entire scatter in the regressed parameters to uncertainties in the exponent on plasma mass. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
