Notes: The various operating modes of TFTR require the use of a sophisticated system of magnetic diagnostics integrated with a feedback control system. This system has successfully controlled the plasma current and position over a range of major and minor radii, during strong compression, and will soon be used during intense neutral beam heating. Current and position values are held constant to within 2 kA and 1 cm. A wide variety of preoperational field measurements were required to determine proper compensation for dynamic stray fields due to eddy currents. Data from plasma profile diagnostics, such as bolometer arrays, Thomson scattering, soft x-ray diode array, and the scanning radiometer, have been compared to the absolute position deduced from magnetics. In addition to control functions, magnetic diagnostics on TFTR provide data on plasma current asymmetry, βθ, MHD fluctuations, loop voltage, and flux consumption. This paper will discuss the mechanical and electronic design constraints, as well as the analytic and calibration techniques required.

Notes: The primary TFTR neutron source strength measurement system consists of seven fission detectors previously calibrated with D–D and D–T neutron generators and a 252Cf neutron source inside the TFTR vacuum vessel. A recalibration became desirable because of the addition of major components to the tokamak. The new calibration with the D–D neutron generator in situ is consistent with the detection efficiencies measured in the previous calibrations, within the uncertainties. Effects of the anisotropic emission of the neutron generator, due both to the variation of the differential D–D yield with angle (similar to that from beam–target and beam–beam reactions in the beam-driven TFTR plasma) and to scattering and absorption by the generator heads have been observed.

Notes: The TFTR multichannel neutron collimator provides time-resolved neutron emission profiles from ten vertical chords spaced in major radius across the vacuum vessel. An in situ calibration of the system has been made using a 120 mCi 252Cf source scanned inside the vacuum vessel. A mapping of the effective neutron acceptance aperture was performed and showed reasonable agreement with the optical predictions testifying to the effectiveness of the interstitial shielding material. Crosstalk between channels was evaluated and found to be negligible. Periodic renormalization of the system has shown a standard deviation among the sensitivities of only 2.0% over the first seven months of operation.
