Notes: Abstract This study compared the effects of the β-carboline anxiolytic, abecarnil, with other benzodiazepine receptor (BZR) ligands, including the full agonists diazepam and alprazolam, and the partial agonists ZK 95962 and bretazenil (Ro 16-6028), and alpidem, in the mouse four-plate test and plus-maze. The efficacy and potency of each compound was related to the fraction of BZR occupied by the drug. Abecarnil was efficacious in both tests and showed anxiolytic effects comparable with alprazolam and diazepam. In the four-plate test, abecarnil, bretazenil, and ZK 95962 had selective effects on releasing exploratory locomotor activity suppressed by footshock (punished crossings). None of these compounds significantly altered non-punished crossings. In contrast, diazepam and alprazolam increased both unpunished and punished crossings at low to medium doses (receptor occupancies of approximately 20–60%). The number of punished and unpunished crossings fell to control levels or below at higher, more sedative doses (approximately 80% receptor occupancy). Alpidem had very weak anxiolytic-like effects in this test and markedly reduced unpunished crossings at relatively low receptor occupancies (〉 15%). In the plus-maze, abecarnil increased the time spent in the open arms and the percentage open arm entries to an extent equal to that observed following diazepam or alprazolam administration. Bretazenil and ZK 95962 had weak effects on the measures of anxiolytic activity in this test. Alpidem also had little anxiolytic-like activity in the plus-maze but markedly reduced the total number of arm entries. The fractional BZR occupancies required to increase the time spent in the open arms of the maze to 250% of control levels were approximately 45% for abecarnil and alprazolam, 60% for diazepam, and 100% for ZK 95962. Bretazenil did not reach this potentiation at the doses tested (up to 89% receptor occupancy). Abecarnil appeared to act as a full agonist on the measures of anxiolytic activity in both tests (i.e. required low fractional BZR occupancies) but on the measures of stimulation or sedation was more similar to the BZR partial agonists (i.e. had no significant effects even at receptor occupancies approaching 100%). On this basis abecarnil could be described as a “selective agonist”. In general, the four-plate test was more sensitive than the plus-maze. For example, lower BZR occupancies were needed to produce significant anxiolytic effects in the four-plate test than in the plus-maze. In addition, the partial agonists bretazenil and ZK 95962, which both produced weak effects in the plus-maze, had similar anxiolytic potencies to the full BZR agonists, diazepam and alprazolam, in the four-plate test.

Notes: Abstract We studied 20 electrophoretic loci in two populations ofAteles (Ateles paniscus paniscus andAteles paniscus chamek). We observed intrapopulational variation at the following loci: esterase D, glyoxalase 1, adenosine deaminase (A. p. chamek) and carbonic anhydrase 2 (A. p. paniscus). The two populations share the most frequent alleles at 17 loci, but we noted great differences in glyoxalase 1, adenosine deaminase and phosphoglucomutase 1.A. p. paniscus is monomorphic for theGLO1 *1 allele, which has a frequency of 6% inA. p.chamek. They did not share alleles in relation to the ADA and PGM1 loci. We found a CA2 allele, named hereCA2 *1, which has not been described previously in other neotropical primates (Sampaio et al., 1991a), inA. p. paniscus. The present results suggest that the geographical isolation represented by the Rio Amazonas has lasted long enough to support this level of divergence. These observations taken together with chromosomal findings, led us to endorse the proposal of two distinct species:Ateles paniscus andAteles chamek.

Notes: Abstract A wild population situated in the border of the distributions ofSaimiri sciureus macrodon andS. boliviensis peruviensis, in the Peruvian Amazonia, was studied in relation to 22 protein loci. These genetic markers provided indications of secondary intergradation between these two taxa, reinforcing previous morphological and cytogenetic evidences. Continued studies in this region on the hybrids' viability and fertility may be important for decisions related to the taxonomy of this genus.

Notes: Abstract A comparative study of 20 blood genetic systems was performed on three populations of genusSaguinus: S. fuscicollis weddelli, S. midas niger, andS. midas midas. Some markers are useful for the characterization of the two species.ADA 5, ADA6, CA23, CA24, andES2 2 occur only inS. fuscicollis whileADA 4is fixed inS. midas. S. midas midas showed heterozygosity value comparable to those previously obtained for the genusAlouatta. Estimates of genetic distance betweenS. fuscicollis andS. midas species of about 14% are in accordance with those referred to in the literature for interspecific differences. Genetic distances between subspecies ofSaguinus midas were nearly 3%, which is within the range for subspecies.

Notes: Abstract The electrophoretic patterns of 15 protein systems codified for 20 genetic loci were investigated using horizontal electrophoresis. A total of 150 blood samples, from five species of the genusCallithrix were analyzed. Polymorphic variation was observed in 10 out 20 loci analyzed. The genotypic distributions are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The average heterozygosity (H) varied from 1% to 5%, similar to those observed for other Neotropical primates. The genetic distance coefficients revealed a phylogenetic separation of these species into two groups: (1) “argentata” (C. humeralifer andC. emiliae); (2) “jacchus” (C. jacchus, C. penicillata, andC. geoffroyi). This arrangement is according to the taxonomic arrangement proposed byHershkovitz (1977),de Vivo (1988), andMittermeier et al. (1988). The results in each group are compatible with the subspecies values recorded for the Platyrrhini. These values showed that:C. humeralifer andC. emiliae are subspecies ofC. argentata;C. jacchus, C. penicillata, andC. geoffroyi are subspecies ofC. jacchus. These results also suggest thatC. j. geoffroyi is the “jacchus” group taxon, most similar genetically to the “argentata” group.

Notes: Abstract Implementations of artificial neural networks as analog VLSI circuits differ in their method of synaptic weight storage (digital weights, analog EEPROMs, or capacitive weights) and in whether learning is performed locally at the synapses or off-chip. In this paper, we explain the principles of analog networks with in situ or local synaptic learning of capacitive weights, with test results of CMOS implementations from our laboratory. Synapses for both simple Hebbian and mean field networks are investigated. Synaptic weights may be refreshed by periodic rehearsal on the training data, which compensates for temperature drift or other nonstationarity. Compact high-performance layouts have been obtained in which learning adjusts for component variability.

Notes: Abstract In combination with the biofragmentable Valtrac ring a newly developed purse-string suture clamp offers the possibility of performing intraperitoneal anastomoses of the small and large bowel without the need for stapling devices. During this experimental study endto-end anastomoses of the descending colon were constructed in five pigs. One animal was re-examined on day 1 after the operation and the others were all sacrificed on day 21 after. None of the animals showed any signs of an anastomotic leakage. Little scar tissue was seen macroscopically or histologically in the anastomotic region of the animals sacrificed 3 weeks after the operation. The operative technique presented in this paper might render the so-called assisted laparoscopic procedures for the right hemicolon unnecessary in the future.
